About this publication
IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager is a client/server program that provides storage
management solutions to customers in a multi-vendor computer environment. IBM
Tivoli Storage Manager provides an automated, centrally scheduled,
policy-managed backup, archive, and space-management facility for file servers
and workstations.
Who should read this guide
This reference is intended for anyone who is registered as an administrator. A
single administrator can manage Tivoli Storage Manager, or several people can
share administrative responsibilities.
You should be familiar with the operating system on which the server resides and
the communication protocols required for the client/server environment. You also
need to understand the storage management practices of your organization, such
as how you are currently backing up workstation files and how you are using
storage devices.

Using IBM Support Assistant The IBM Support Assistant is a free, stand-alone application that you can install on
any workstation. You can then enhance the application by installing
product-specific plug-in modules for the IBM products you use.
The IBM Support Assistant helps you gather support information when you need
to open a problem management record (PMR), which you can then use to track the
problem. The product-specific plug-in modules provide you with the following

Finding product fixes A product fix might be available to resolve your problem. You can determine what
fixes are available by checking the product support Web site.
1. Go to the IBM Software Support Web site: http://www.ibm.com/software/ tivoli/products/storage-mgr/product-links.html
2. Click the
Pages link for your Tivoli Storage Manager product.
3. Click Fixes for a list of fixes for your product.
4. Click the name of a fix to read the description and optionally download the fix.
Getting E-mail notification of product fixes You can sign up to receive weekly E-mail notifications about fixes and other news
about IBM products.
1. From the support page for any IBM product, click My support in the
upper-right corner of the page.
2. If you have already registered, skip to the next step. If you have not registered,
click register in the upper-right corner of the support page to establish your
user ID and password.

APAR is resolved and a fix is delivered. IBM publishes resolved APARs on the
IBM product support Web pages daily, so that other users who experience the
same problem can benefit from the same resolutions.

In the usage and descriptions for administrative commands, the term characters
corresponds to the number of bytes available to store an item. For languages in
which it takes a single byte to represent a displayable character, the character to
byte ratio is 1 to 1. However, for DBCS and other multi-byte languages, the
reference to characters refers only to the number of bytes available for the item and
may represent fewer actual characters.
Accessibility features
Accessibility features help a user who has a physical disability, such as restricted
mobility or limited vision, to use software products successfully. The major
accessibility features of Tivoli Storage Manager are described in this topic.
v Server and client command-line interfaces provide comprehensive control of Tivoli Storage Manager using a keyboard.
v The Windows client-graphical interface can be navigated and operated using a
keyboard.
v The Web backup-archive client interface is HTML 4.0 compliant, and accessibility

MouseKeys).
Technical changes for Version 5.5
The following changes have been made to the product for this edition:
New method for calculating migration thresholds for storage pools associated
with sequential-access disk (FILE) devices
In previous releases of Tivoli Storage Manager, migration thresholds for storage pools associated with sequential-access disk (FILE) devices were
based on the percentage of volumes utilized. In this release, migration
thresholds are based on a percentage of the storage pool’s total data
capacity. Migration thresholds for other types of sequential-access storage
pools are still based on the percentage of volumes utilized.
For example, a sequential-access disk storage pool with a total capacity of 100 TB and a high migration threshold of 70% will be migrated when the
pool contains 70 TB of data. This method of calculating migration
thresholds provides a potentially more efficient use of large,
sequential-access disk storage pools. The server continues to migrate files
by volume; after each volume is migrated, the server checks to determine
if the low migration threshold has been reached.
When you start the version 5.5 server, the percentage of data in a
FILE-type storage pool that can be migrated is immediately recalculated
using the new metric. If you are upgrading from a previous version of Tivoli Storage Manager, you will discover that more data must be stored
before migration starts. Be sure to adjust your migration thresholds so that
you do not run out of space for routine storage operations such as client
backups.

v UPDATE STGPOOL—Primary Sequential Access
Concurrent access to volumes in storage pools with a device type of FILE
In previous versions of Tivoli Storage Manager, a client session or server
process had to wait for a FILE volume if the volume was in use by another
session or process. In this version, the Tivoli Storage Manager server
allows concurrent read access and write access to the volume.
Concurrent access improves restore performance by allowing two or more
clients to access the same volume at the same time. Multiple client sessions
(archive, retrieve, backup, and restore) or server processes (for example,
storage pool backup) can read the volume concurrently. In addition, one
client session can write to the volume while it is being read.
The following server processes are allowed shared read access to FILE
volumes:
v RESTORE VOLUME
The following server processes are not allowed shared read access to FILE
volumes:
v RECLAMATION
A FILE volume can appear as the current volume for more than one
session and as the target of concurrent read and write operations. There are
no command changes associated with this feature.
Restartable server-to-server export
You can now suspend and later restart an export operation if it is a
server-to-server export that is designated with a FILEDATA value other
than NONE. If an export operation was suspended because of errors or
because the SUSPEND EXPORT command was issued, you can restart the
export at the point where it was suspended. To find those export
operations that can be restarted, issue the QUERY EXPORT command.
You can also specify the TODATE/TOTIME parameter when issuing an
EXPORT NODE or EXPORT SERVER command. The following commands
were added to support restartable exports:
v CANCEL EXPORT
v QUERY EXPORT
v RESTART EXPORT
v SUSPEND EXPORT
IBM and HP LTO-4 Drive Support and Encryption Tivoli Storage Manager now supports IBM and HP LTO-4 tape drives. New
recording formats are available for the LTO device class. Tape device
encryption is also supported. Encryption provides security for data on
individual tapes and protects sensitive information that might be
transported off-site. When enabled, Tivoli Storage Manager handles
encrypting and decrypting data on tapes, according to specifications set
when defining the LTO device class. To enable drive encryption with IBM
LTO-4, you must have the IBM RMSS Ultrium device driver installed. SCSI
drives do not support IBM LTO-4 encryption.

New support for Plasmon and IBM UDO2 optical disk drives and media
Tivoli Storage Manager now supports Plasmon and IBM UDO2 optical disk
drives and media. A new recording format is available for the OPTICAL
device type. You cannot mix UDO1 and UDO2 drives in a single library.

Support for long file names
Tivoli Storage Manager now supports up to 8704 bytes in length for fully
qualified file names (a file name and file path combined). This support is
available for backup and restore functions, and is dependent on whether or
not the client also supports the byte length. Fully qualified file names
might be truncated in message or query output. To display the full name,
use the DISPLAY OBJNAME command.

TCP/IP Version 6
Tivoli Storage Manager is now able to use TCP/IP Version 6 (IPv6) as its
communications protocol. IPv6 is interoperable with TCP/IP Version 4. You
can specify either IPv4 or both IPv4 and IPv6 in the COMMMETHOD
option when you start the server, storage agent, client, or API application.
The same port numbers are used by the server, storage agent, client, or API
application for both IPv4 and IPv6.
IPv6 address formats are acceptable for all functions that support IPv6.
However, if you use IPv6 addresses for functions that do not support IPv6,
communications will fail. The following functions do not support IPv6:
v NDMP: backing up and restoring storage pools, copying and moving
data (continue to use IPv4)
v ACLS (continue to use IPv4)
v SNMP (continue to use IPv4)
v Centera device support (continue to use IPv4)
v Shared Memory Protocol (continue to use IPv4)
v Windows Microsoft Management Console functions (continue to use
IPv4)
v Administration Center (continue to use IPv4)

Running SAN Discovery for non-root users
You can run SAN discovery to obtain information about devices on a
storage area network for LAN-free configuration or to automatically correct
device special file names if they have changed. SAN discovery on AIX
requires root user authority. To allow both root and non-root users to
perform SAN discovery, a special utility module, dsmqsan, is invoked
when a SAN-discovery function is launched. The module performs as root,
giving SAN-discovery authority to non-root users. The dsmqsan module

works only for SAN-discovery functions, and does not provide root
privileges for any other Tivoli Storage Manager functions.

Tivoli Storage Manager provides several different command line interfaces. The
interface you choose depends on the tasks that you want to perform and
accessibility.
v Administrative command-line client
v Administration Center command line
The administrative command-line client is a program that runs on a file server,
workstation, or mainframe. It is installed as part of the Tivoli Storage Manager
server installation process. With the administrative client, you can issue any and all
server commands.
Compared to the administrative client, the capabilities of the server console are
somewhat limited. For example, you cannot issue certain commands from the
server console, and you cannot specify that certain commands process before other
commands can be issued. (This procedure can be useful if, for example, you want
to run two commands in quick succession.) Furthermore, because the server
console is a DOS window on the machine on which the server is installed, you
must be physically located at the server machine to use the console. The
administrative client, on the other hand, can be accessed remotely from a different
location. You cannot route commands to other servers from the server console.
The Administration Center is a Web-based, task-oriented interface for centrally
configuring and managing Tivoli Storage Manager servers. The Administration
Center provides a command line interface that you can use if necessary. For
example, you might want to use the command line interface to perform Tivoli
Storage Manager functions that are limited or not supported in the Administration
Center. Using the command line in the Administration Center, you can issue any
and all server commands.
Issuing commands from the administrative client
The administrative command-line client is a program that runs on a file server,
workstation, or mainframe.
Ensure that your administrative client and your server are running in compatible
languages. See “LANGUAGE” on page 1297 for language and locale options. If your client and server are using different languages, the messages that Tivoli
Storage Manager generates might not be understandable.

administrative client session responses.

The Tivoli Storage Manager server must be running before an administrative client
can connect. For instructions about starting the server, see the Installation Guide.
To start an administrative client session in command-line mode, enter this
command on your workstation:

DSMADMC command using the -ID and -PASSWORD options as shown.
2. The -DATAONLY option specifies whether product version information
and output headers display with the output. The default is NO.
v NO specifies that the product version information and output column
headers display.
v YES suppresses the product version information and output column
headers.
Stop an administrative command-line client session by entering the following
command on your workstation:

Monitoring server activities from the administrative client
To monitor Tivoli Storage Manager activities, such as server migration and client
logons, run the administrative client in console mode. You cannot enter any
administrative commands in console mode.
To start an administrative client session in console mode, enter:
dsmadmc -consolemode
You are prompted for a password if authentication is turned on for the server. If you do not want to be prompted for your user ID and password, enter the
DSMADMC command with the -ID and -PASSWORD options.
To end an administrative client session in console mode, see Table 1.

To monitor the mounting and dismounting of removable media, run the
administrative client in mount mode. When the client is running in mount mode,
you cannot enter any administrative commands.
To start an administrative client session in mount mode, enter:
dsmadmc -mountmode
You are prompted for a password if authentication is turned on for the server. If you do not want to be prompted for your user ID and password, enter the
DSMADMC command with the -ID and -PASSWORD options.
To end an administrative client session in mount mode, see Table 1 on page 2.
Processing commands one at a time from the administrative
client
Use batch mode to enter a single administrative command. Your administrative
client session automatically ends when the command has processed.
To start an administrative client session in batch mode, enter:
dsmadmc server_command
If you do not want to be prompted for your user ID and password, you can enter
the DSMADMC command with the -ID and -PASSWORD options.
In batch mode, you must enter the complete command on one line. If a command
does not fit on one line, enter the command by using a macro or a script. If you
specify a parameter with a string of text using batch mode, enclose the text in single quotation marks (’ ’) in the macro. Do not use double quotes for commands
in batch mode, because your operating system might not parse the quotes correctly.
Processing a series of commands from the administrative
client
Use the interactive mode to process a series of administrative commands.
To start an administrative client session in interactive mode, a server session must
be available. To ensure the availability of server sessions for both administrative
and client node sessions, the interactive mode of the administrative client is
disconnected if one or more of the following conditions is true:
v The server was stopped using the HALT command.
v Commands were not issued from the administrative client session for the length
of time specified with the IDLETIMEOUT server option.
v The administrative client session was canceled with the CANCEL SESSION
command.

About this publication
IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager is a client/server program that provides storage
management solutions to customers in a multi-vendor computer environment. IBM
Tivoli Storage Manager provides an automated, centrally scheduled,
policy-managed backup, archive, and space-management facility for file servers
and workstations.
Who should read this guide
This reference is intended for anyone who is registered as an administrator. A
single administrator can manage Tivoli Storage Manager, or several people can
share administrative responsibilities.
You should be familiar with the operating system on which the server resides and
the communication protocols required for the client/server environment. You also
need to understand the storage management practices of your organization, such
as how you are currently backing up workstation files and how you are using
storage devices.

If the problem you submit is for a software defect or for missing or inaccurate
documentation, IBM Software Support creates an Authorized Program Analysis
Report (APAR). The APAR describes the problem in detail. Whenever possible,
IBM Software Support provides a workaround for you to implement until the
APAR is resolved and a fix is delivered. IBM publishes resolved APARs on the
IBM product support Web pages daily, so that other users who experience the

Conventions used in this guide

In the usage and descriptions for administrative commands, the term characters
corresponds to the number of bytes available to store an item. For languages in
which it takes a single byte to represent a displayable character, the character to
byte ratio is 1 to 1. However, for DBCS and other multi-byte languages, the
reference to characters refers only to the number of bytes available for the item and
may represent fewer actual characters.
Accessibility features
Accessibility features help a user who has a physical disability, such as restricted
mobility or limited vision, to use software products successfully. The major
accessibility features of Tivoli Storage Manager are described in this topic.
v Server and client command-line interfaces provide comprehensive control of Tivoli Storage Manager using a keyboard.
v The Windows client-graphical interface can be navigated and operated using a
keyboard.
v The Web backup-archive client interface is HTML 4.0 compliant, and accessibility
is limited only by the choice of Internet browser.
v All user documentation is provided in HTML and PDF format. Descriptive text
is provided for all documentation images.
v The Tivoli Storage Manager for Windows Console follows Microsoft®
conventions for all keyboard navigation and access. Drag and Drop support is
handled using the Microsoft Windows Accessibility option known as
MouseKeys. For more information about MouseKeys and other Windows
accessibility options, please refer to the Windows Online Help (keyword:
MouseKeys).
Technical changes for Version 5.5
The following changes have been made to the product for this edition:
New method for calculating migration thresholds for storage pools associated
with sequential-access disk (FILE) devices
In previous releases of Tivoli Storage Manager, migration thresholds for storage pools associated with sequential-access disk (FILE) devices were
based on the percentage of volumes utilized. In this release, migration
thresholds are based on a percentage of the storage pool’s total data
capacity. Migration thresholds for other types of sequential-access storage
pools are still based on the percentage of volumes utilized.
For example, a sequential-access disk storage pool with a total capacity of 100 TB and a high migration threshold of 70% will be migrated when the
pool contains 70 TB of data. This method of calculating migration
thresholds provides a potentially more efficient use of large,
sequential-access disk storage pools. The server continues to migrate files
by volume; after each volume is migrated, the server checks to determine
if the low migration threshold has been reached.
When you start the version 5.5 server, the percentage of data in a
FILE-type storage pool that can be migrated is immediately recalculated
using the new metric. If you are upgrading from a previous version of Tivoli Storage Manager, you will discover that more data must be stored
before migration starts. Be sure to adjust your migration thresholds so that
you do not run out of space for routine storage operations such as client
backups.
v DEFINE STGPOOL—Primary Sequential Access
v UPDATE STGPOOL—Primary Sequential Access
Concurrent access to volumes in storage pools with a device type of FILE
In previous versions of Tivoli Storage Manager, a client session or server
process had to wait for a FILE volume if the volume was in use by another
session or process. In this version, the Tivoli Storage Manager server
allows concurrent read access and write access to the volume.
Concurrent access improves restore performance by allowing two or more
clients to access the same volume at the same time. Multiple client sessions
(archive, retrieve, backup, and restore) or server processes (for example,
storage pool backup) can read the volume concurrently. In addition, one
client session can write to the volume while it is being read.
The following server processes are allowed shared read access to FILE
volumes:
v RESTORE VOLUME
The following server processes are not allowed shared read access to FILE
volumes:
v RECLAMATION
A FILE volume can appear as the current volume for more than one
session and as the target of concurrent read and write operations. There are
no command changes associated with this feature.
Restartable server-to-server export
You can now suspend and later restart an export operation if it is a
server-to-server export that is designated with a FILEDATA value other
than NONE. If an export operation was suspended because of errors or
because the SUSPEND EXPORT command was issued, you can restart the
export at the point where it was suspended. To find those export
operations that can be restarted, issue the QUERY EXPORT command.
You can also specify the TODATE/TOTIME parameter when issuing an
EXPORT NODE or EXPORT SERVER command. The following commands
were added to support restartable exports:
v CANCEL EXPORT
v QUERY EXPORT
v RESTART EXPORT
v SUSPEND EXPORT
IBM and HP LTO-4 Drive Support and Encryption Tivoli Storage Manager now supports IBM and HP LTO-4 tape drives. New
recording formats are available for the LTO device class. Tape device
encryption is also supported. Encryption provides security for data on
individual tapes and protects sensitive information that might be
transported off-site. When enabled, Tivoli Storage Manager handles
encrypting and decrypting data on tapes, according to specifications set
when defining the LTO device class. To enable drive encryption with IBM
LTO-4, you must have the IBM RMSS Ultrium device driver installed. SCSI
drives do not support IBM LTO-4 encryption.

New support for Plasmon and IBM UDO2 optical disk drives and media
Tivoli Storage Manager now supports Plasmon and IBM UDO2 optical disk
drives and media. A new recording format is available for the OPTICAL
device type. You cannot mix UDO1 and UDO2 drives in a single library.

Support for long file names
Tivoli Storage Manager now supports up to 8704 bytes in length for fully
qualified file names (a file name and file path combined). This support is
available for backup and restore functions, and is dependent on whether or
not the client also supports the byte length. Fully qualified file names
might be truncated in message or query output. To display the full name,
use the DISPLAY OBJNAME command.

TCP/IP Version 6
Tivoli Storage Manager is now able to use TCP/IP Version 6 (IPv6) as its
communications protocol. IPv6 is interoperable with TCP/IP Version 4. You
can specify either IPv4 or both IPv4 and IPv6 in the COMMMETHOD
option when you start the server, storage agent, client, or API application.
The same port numbers are used by the server, storage agent, client, or API
application for both IPv4 and IPv6.
IPv6 address formats are acceptable for all functions that support IPv6.
However, if you use IPv6 addresses for functions that do not support IPv6,
communications will fail. The following functions do not support IPv6:
v NDMP: backing up and restoring storage pools, copying and moving
data (continue to use IPv4)
v ACLS (continue to use IPv4)
v SNMP (continue to use IPv4)
v Centera device support (continue to use IPv4)
v Shared Memory Protocol (continue to use IPv4)
v Windows Microsoft Management Console functions (continue to use
IPv4)
v Administration Center (continue to use IPv4)

Client and Server authentication using Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
Tivoli Storage Manager now supports the use of Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
for authentication of passwords between the server and clients.

Running SAN Discovery for non-root users
You can run SAN discovery to obtain information about devices on a
storage area network for LAN-free configuration or to automatically correct
device special file names if they have changed. SAN discovery on AIX
requires root user authority. To allow both root and non-root users to
perform SAN discovery, a special utility module, dsmqsan, is invoked
when a SAN-discovery function is launched. The module performs as root,
giving SAN-discovery authority to non-root users. The dsmqsan module

works only for SAN-discovery functions, and does not provide root
privileges for any other Tivoli Storage Manager functions.

Tivoli Storage Manager provides several different command line interfaces. The
interface you choose depends on the tasks that you want to perform and
accessibility.
v Administrative command-line client
v Administration Center command line
The administrative command-line client is a program that runs on a file server,
workstation, or mainframe. It is installed as part of the Tivoli Storage Manager
server installation process. With the administrative client, you can issue any and all
server commands.
Compared to the administrative client, the capabilities of the server console are
somewhat limited. For example, you cannot issue certain commands from the
server console, and you cannot specify that certain commands process before other
commands can be issued. (This procedure can be useful if, for example, you want
to run two commands in quick succession.) Furthermore, because the server
console is a DOS window on the machine on which the server is installed, you
must be physically located at the server machine to use the console. The
administrative client, on the other hand, can be accessed remotely from a different
location. You cannot route commands to other servers from the server console.
The Administration Center is a Web-based, task-oriented interface for centrally
configuring and managing Tivoli Storage Manager servers. The Administration
Center provides a command line interface that you can use if necessary. For
example, you might want to use the command line interface to perform Tivoli
Storage Manager functions that are limited or not supported in the Administration
Center. Using the command line in the Administration Center, you can issue any
and all server commands.
Issuing commands from the administrative client
The administrative command-line client is a program that runs on a file server,
workstation, or mainframe.
Ensure that your administrative client and your server are running in compatible
languages. See “LANGUAGE” on page 1297 for language and locale options. If your client and server are using different languages, the messages that Tivoli
Storage Manager generates might not be understandable.

administrative client session responses.

The Tivoli Storage Manager server must be running before an administrative client
can connect. For instructions about starting the server, see the Installation Guide.
To start an administrative client session in command-line mode, enter this
command on your workstation:

1. If you do not want to be prompted for a user ID and password, enter the
DSMADMC command using the -ID and -PASSWORD options as shown.
2. The -DATAONLY option specifies whether product version information
and output headers display with the output. The default is NO.
v NO specifies that the product version information and output column
headers display.
v YES suppresses the product version information and output column
headers.
Stop an administrative command-line client session by entering the following
command on your workstation:

Monitoring server activities from the administrative client
To monitor Tivoli Storage Manager activities, such as server migration and client
logons, run the administrative client in console mode. You cannot enter any
administrative commands in console mode.
To start an administrative client session in console mode, enter:
dsmadmc -consolemode
You are prompted for a password if authentication is turned on for the server. If you do not want to be prompted for your user ID and password, enter the
DSMADMC command with the -ID and -PASSWORD options.
To end an administrative client session in console mode, see Table 1.

client
To monitor the mounting and dismounting of removable media, run the
administrative client in mount mode. When the client is running in mount mode,
you cannot enter any administrative commands.
To start an administrative client session in mount mode, enter:
dsmadmc -mountmode
You are prompted for a password if authentication is turned on for the server. If you do not want to be prompted for your user ID and password, enter the
DSMADMC command with the -ID and -PASSWORD options.
To end an administrative client session in mount mode, see Table 1 on page 2.
Processing commands one at a time from the administrative
client
Use batch mode to enter a single administrative command. Your administrative
client session automatically ends when the command has processed.
To start an administrative client session in batch mode, enter:
dsmadmc server_command
If you do not want to be prompted for your user ID and password, you can enter
the DSMADMC command with the -ID and -PASSWORD options.
In batch mode, you must enter the complete command on one line. If a command
does not fit on one line, enter the command by using a macro or a script. If you
specify a parameter with a string of text using batch mode, enclose the text in single quotation marks (’ ’) in the macro. Do not use double quotes for commands
in batch mode, because your operating system might not parse the quotes correctly.
Processing a series of commands from the administrative
client
Use the interactive mode to process a series of administrative commands.
To start an administrative client session in interactive mode, a server session must
be available. To ensure the availability of server sessions for both administrative
and client node sessions, the interactive mode of the administrative client is
disconnected if one or more of the following conditions is true:
v The server was stopped using the HALT command.
v Commands were not issued from the administrative client session for the length
of time specified with the IDLETIMEOUT server option.
v The administrative client session was canceled with the CANCEL SESSION
command.
