Characteristics of Internal Storage
Familiar environment for workstations and small servers
Low cost (generic) disks
“Acceptable” performance
Limited RAID capability
Limited expandability
Storage managed at the volume level
Data not shared among users
No central storage management
IBM System Storage SAN Solutions Overview
© 2003 IBM Corporation10© 2006 IBM Corporation
Characteristics of Direct Connect External Storage
Typically SCSI
Familiar option available for years
Supports both disk and tape
Data still “owned” by one server
Not shared among users
Limited RAID capability
Limited expandability
No central storage management
IBM System Storage SAN Solutions Overview

Characteristics of iSCSI LAN-Attached
Similar to DAS
Replaces ribbon cables with Ethernet LAN Separate LAN and/or GbE* recommended
for performance Requires new OS device drivers
Disks are grouped in arrays in external enclosures with RAID
Capacity managed at volume level and each LUN is assigned to a specific server
Data still not shared, no storage management
Not high performance – uses TCP/IP
Available for Windows, Linux and Unix
IBM TotalStorage DS300 is iSCSI-attach
* GbE = Gigabit Ethernet

Characteristics of Fabric Attached Storage (N Series)
Concurrent support for most common forms of extended attach LAN-attached support for NFS
and CIFS file system storage Pools of capacity shared for server
and workstation files Support for iSCSI volumes
Primarily for application servers (i.e. Microsoft Exchange)
Support for Fibre Channel volumes Primarily for application servers
(i.e. SAP, PACs) and web servers
Not for highest performance
Enables Infrastructure Simplification and Business Continuity

Routes To SMB Marketplace
Primarily Business Partners
Primarily Intel-based servers Primarily Windows
Also Linux, Netware, VMWare Competitors are HP, Dell
Some Unix pSeries, HP, Sun
Primarily individual servers, but some BladeCenters too
Intel-based BPs prefer Part Number products (via SAP) Available from high volume distributors
Unix BPs usually buy using Machine-Type-Model (MTM via AAS)
IBM System Storage SAN Solutions Overview

SystemSeller Introduced Worldwide in 2005
Based on successful program introduced in EMEA in 2004
Objective is “Easy to Sell, Easy to Order, Easy to Install”
Preference for Express Model products
Optimal configurations minimize complexity
Stocked by distributors for fast availability
Selected for high turn-over rate and volume sales
Supported by special advertising, Terms and Conditions

Learning Points IBM now recommends specific products for specific environments
McDATA 16 or 32-port switch in SMB when competing against HP
Lower cost, HP doesn’t offer McDATA switches
Cisco 9216i for 4 Gbps FC/IP routing in SMB
Integrated switch/router is less costly than separate switches and routers for Business Continuity applications
McDATA or Cisco directors where 10 Gbps ISL links are needed
For high-bandwidth trunking (especially within the core)
Brocade allows up to eight 4 Gbps links to be trunked together
Brocade will offer the only 4 Gbps director with integrated IP routing
For Business Continuity applications
