    IBM SmartCloud ProvisioningVersion 1.2

Quick Start GuideThis guide is intended to get you started with a base installation of IBM SmartCloud Provisioning Version

    1.2.

    Product Overview

IBM SmartCloud Provisioning, formerly known as IBM Service Agility Accelerator on Cloud, is an Infrastructure-as-a-Service(IaaS) offering that delivers computer infrastructure as a service by providing on-demand access to virtual machines and storagein the network. SmartCloud Provisioning is designed to deliver cloud services with high scalability and with very little humanintervention.

With this product, users can perform:vProvisioning and deprovisioning of virtual machines.vImage management.v

    Network and storage services.

A major business requirement in cloud environments is that they must be able to support extensive scalability at an acceptableand competitive cost. Most cloud projects are expected to be able to support thousands of concurrently active virtual machineswith quick provisioning times and reasonable performances. The cost of managing a very large number of servers usingtraditional management approaches would be prohibitive, therefore different approaches must be devised.

The basic characteristics of the SmartCloud Provisioning solution are:High scale

SmartCloud Provisioning is extremely fast because it uses peer-to-peer parallel and distributed techniques. It allowsmultiple provisioning tasks to occur in parallel so that it is able to manage thousands of servers. It can deploythousands of virtual machines in an hour and a single deployment in few minutes.

Low touchSmartCloud Provisioning minimizes the use of centralized command and control in favor of scale out management. Theendpoints participate in the management activities and do not depend on a single configuration management database.By implementing this model, SmartCloud Provisioning also provides automatic recovery and high tolerance to failures inthe network.

2 Step 2: Plan your infrastructure

There are two types of servers in a typical SmartCloud Provisioning environment: Compute Nodes and Storage Nodes. TheStorage Nodes are optimized for disk and network I/O, while the Compute Nodes are optimized for CPU and RAM, although I/Ois also critical. The Storage Nodes serve up the master images and persistent user volumes, while the Compute Nodes are usedto host the virtual machines.

The SmartCloud Provisioning environment requires two or more Storage Nodes and two or more Compute Nodes, and it alsorequires a machine as a PXE Server if you are going to use the automation installer. There are approximately 6:1 Compute Nodesto Storage Nodes. This is a recommended ratio from practice, and you can adjust it according to your system workload.

The following are the components of SmartCloud Provisioning:PXE ServerProvides DHCP, DNS, HTTP, and TFTP services. It is used to quickly set up all SmartCloud Provisioning components over thenetwork.

    Zookeeper

Zookeeper is part of the Apache Hadoop project. It is a scalable resilient distributed lock service. To ensure high availability,it must be deployed in odd numbers of servers with a minimum of three nodes.

    Web Service

All administrative and user access to SmartCloud Provisioning is provided through a RESTful webservice interface. At leastone copy of this virtual machine must be running.

    Web Console

At least one copy of the Web Console must be deployed to run the web UI.

LDAP ServerLDAP provides user authentication for the Web Console. It's optional and configurable. If you have no LDAP server, theSmartCloud Provisioning installer can help you install an LDAP server.

    HBase

HBase is part of the Apache Hadoop project. It is a distributed, scalable, column-oriented data store modeled after Google'sBigTable. HBase has dependency on HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System). The minimum recommended deployment isthree copies of this virtual machine, but it is highly recommended to have more nodes, for example, 7.

    Rest Server

The REST Server is a gateway for the HBase cluster. All requests to HBase are processed by this component. The minimumis 1 node, but you can have more nodes for balance purpose.

    Storage Nodes

The Storage Nodes provide images and volumes services through the iSCSI Target Server. The default iSCSI Target Server isLinux tgtd. The minimum is 2 nodes. Each Storage Node is equipped with a storage bot. A storage bot is an agent thatmanages all storage-oriented resources and tasks.

    Compute Nodes

The Compute Nodes host the deployed virtual images. The minimum is 1 node but, depending on your environment andforecasted workload, you can have more nodes. Each Compute Node is equipped with a compute bot. A compute bot is anagent that manages all computing-oriented resources and tasks.

    Virtual Image Library

The Virtual Image Library component provides image management services such as, for example, federation, comparison, inventory, search, versioning, and replication through a public programming interface.

    Image Construction and Composition Tool

The Image Construction and Composition Tool helps you building images that are reusable, self-descriptive, customizable,

shareable, and manageable. Images can contain the basic operating system plus additional software bundles.

In a typical deployment:vThe PXE Server is installed on a physical box, the so-called First Box, but it can also be installed on a virtual machine.vThe Storage Nodes are deployed on physical machines but they can also be virtualized.vThe Compute Nodes are deployed on physical boxes.vYou choose VMware ESXi Server as system for the Compute Node. The Compute Bot runs on one of the virtual machines on

the VMware ESXi Server.vThe other components, including ZooKeeper, Hadoop + HBase, REST Server, Web Service, and Web Console are all installed

in virtual machines. These virtual machines can run in any physical machine, but it is highly recommended to run them in theStorage Nodes.
