v Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation,maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electricalstorm.

v Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electricaloutlet.

v When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signalcables.

Chapter 1. Introduction

The IBM ServeRAID H1135 controller enables you to use RAID technology tomanage hard disk drive configurations and integrate Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)technology into your storage infrastructure. You can install the optional IBMServeRAID H1135 controller in an IBM Flex System x220 Compute Node or an IBMBladeCenter® HS23E blade server. To determine if the ServeRAID H1135 controlleris compatible with your compute node or blade server, go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/.

The IBM ServeRAID H1135 controller has four ports for connection to SAS or SerialAdvanced Technology Attachment (SATA) devices and solid state drives (SSD).These four ports provide 6.0 Gbps SAS/SATA link rates, and they can manage twolocal hard disk drives (up to 6.0 Gbps SAS/SATA link rates) and two I/O-modules(up to 3.0 Gbps SAS link rates). The controller uses four full-duplex PCI Express(PCIe) lanes that provide host-side maximum transmission and reception in eachdirection of up to 5.0 GBps, which yields a total bandwidth of 10.0 Gbps for eachfull-duplex lane.

The IBM ServeRAID controller is based on the LSI SAS2004 RAID controller, and itsupports the following RAID configurations:

v RAID 0 striping

v RAID 1 mirroring

v RAID 1 enhanced mirroring (blade server only)

v RAID 10 mirroring and striping (blade server only)

This Installation and User's Guide contains information and instructions forinstalling, removing, updating, and configuring the ServeRAID controller. It alsoincludes instructions for performing basic troubleshooting tasks and solvingproblems with the ServeRAID controller. Using the Documentation BrowserUse the Documentation Browser to browse the contents of the CD, read briefdescriptions of the documents, and view documents, using Adobe Acrobat Readeror xpdf. The Documentation Browser automatically detects the regional settings inyour server and displays the documents in the language for that region (ifavailable). If a document is not available in the language for that region, theEnglish-language version is displayed.

Use one of the following procedures to start the Documentation Browser:v If Autostart is enabled, insert the CD into the CD or DVD drive. The

Documentation Browser starts automatically.v If Autostart is disabled or is not enabled for all users, use one of the following

procedures:– If you are using a Windows operating system, insert the CD into the CD or

DVD drive and click Start → Run. In the Open field, typee:\win32.bat

where e is the drive letter of the CD or DVD drive, and click OK.– If you are using Red Hat Linux, insert the CD into the CD or DVD drive; then,

run the following command from the /mnt/cdrom directory:sh runlinux.sh

Select the server from the Product menu. The Available Topics list displays all thedocuments for the server. Some documents might be in folders. A plus sign (+)indicates each folder or document that has additional documents under it. Click theplus sign to display the additional documents.

When you select a document, a description of the document is displayed underTopic Description. To select more than one document, press and hold the Ctrl keywhile you select the documents. Click View Book to view the selected document ordocuments in Acrobat Reader or xpdf. If you selected more than one document, allthe selected documents are opened in Acrobat Reader or xpdf.

ServeRAID controller featuresThe IBM ServeRAID H1135 controller is based on the LSI SAS2004 RAIDcontroller, and it includes the following features:

v Support for RAID 0, 1, 1E, and 10 configurations.

v Support for hot-swap SAS and SATA devices.

v Support for drive sizes greater than 2 TB for RAID 0, 1E, and 10 (not RAID 1)configurations.

v Support for up to two integrated volumes.

v A fixed stripe size of 64 KB.

v Provides compliance with Disk Data Format (DDF).

v Support for S.M.A.R.T.

v Support for dedicated and global hot spare hard disk drives.

v Support for non-disk devices.

Physical dimensionsThe ServeRAID controller is designed in the CIOv form factor with physicaldimensions of 53 mm (2.1 in.) x 82 mm (3.2 in.). The PCI Express x4 connection ismade through the CIOv connector. The ServeRAID controller supports SAS/SATAand SSD connections through the CIOv connector.

Electrical specificationsThe ServeRAID controller is powered from the CIOv +5 V and +3.3 V power rails.The integrated +1.0 V and +1.8 V are regulated from the +5 V and +3.3 V railsthrough switching regulators. The ServeRAID controller uses +1.0 V, +1.8 V and+3.3 V; all other components use +3.3 V. The maximum power requirement for theServeRAID controller under normal operation is 10 watts.

Using the ServeRAID controllerThe following sections provide basic information about using the IBM ServeRAIDH1135 controller with an IBM BladeCenter blade server or IBM Flex Systemcompute node.

Using the ServeRAID controller with a blade serverThe system board in the IBM blade server enables the ServeRAID controller totransfer data to and from two local hard disk drives (up to 6.0 Gbps SAS/SATA linkrates) and two SAS I/O-modules (up to 3.0 Gbps SAS link rates) in I/O-modulebays 3 and 4 of the BladeCenter unit.


To support the system configuration, and optional external drives or other externaldevices that are connected to an external enclosure or expansion unit, the IBMBladeCenter SAS Connectivity Module or IBM BladeCenter S SAS RAID ControllerModule is installed in I/O-module bay 3 or both I/O-module bays 3 and 4 in theBladeCenter unit for communication with the ServeRAID controller.

To support the external hard disk drives in an external expansion unit or enclosure,the IBM System Storage® DS3000 expansion unit must be attached to the SASConnectivity Module, or the external hard disk drives must be installed in a DiskStorage Module in the applicable I/O-module bays in a BladeCenter S unit thatsupports the Disk Storage Module function. Custom zoning is required so that onlyone IBM System Storage DS3000 expansion unit is mapped to a blade server.

The maximum number of blade servers that you can connect to the BladeCenterunit varies according to the type of BladeCenter unit that you are using. Forexample, some BladeCenter units, such as the BladeCenter H unit (Type 8852 or7989), support a maximum of 14 blade servers, and other BladeCenter units, suchas the BladeCenter S unit (Type 8886), support a maximum of six blade servers.

Using the ServeRAID controller with a compute nodeThe system board in the IBM compute node enables the ServeRAID controller totransfer data to and from two local hard disk drives (up to 6.0 Gbps SAS/SATA linkrates).

Two of the four ports on the ServeRAID controller are wired to the compute node.The following illustration shows the interconnections between the ServeRAIDcontroller and internal components.

Chapter 2. Installing and removing the ServeRAID controller

This chapter provides instructions for handling, installing, and removing the IBMServeRAID H1135 controller.

Handling the ServeRAID controller

Attention: Static electricity can damage the system and other electronic devices.To avoid damage, keep the ServeRAID controller in its static-protective packageuntil you are ready to install it.

To reduce the possibility of damage from electrostatic discharge, observe thefollowing precautions:

v Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up aroundyou.

v The use of a grounding system is recommended but is not required. Forexample, wear an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap, if one is available.

v Handle the ServeRAID controller carefully, holding it by its edges or its frame.

v Do not touch solder joints, pins, or exposed circuitry.

v Do not leave the ServeRAID controller where others can handle and damage it.

v While the ServeRAID controller is still in its static-protective package, touch it toan unpainted metal part of the server for at least 2 seconds. This drains staticelectricity from the package and from your body.

v Remove the ServeRAID controller from its package and install it directly into thecompute node or blade server. If it is necessary to set down the ServeRAIDcontroller, put it back into its static-protective package. Do not place theServeRAID controller on the system cover or on a metal surface.

v Take additional care when you handle the ServeRAID controller during coldweather. Heating reduces indoor humidity and increases static electricity.


Installing the ServeRAID controller

5. Turn device ON.





To install the IBM ServeRAID H1135 controller, complete the following steps:

1. If you have not already done so, read the safety information that begins onpage iii and “Handling the ServeRAID controller” on page 9.

2. If the compute node or blade server is installed, remove it. (For additionalinformation about removing the node or blade server, see the Installation andService Guide or the Installation and User's Guide that came with the computenode or blade server.)

3. Carefully place the compute node or blade server on a flat, static-protectivesurface.


4. Remove the compute node or blade server cover. (For additional informationabout removing the cover, see the Installation and Service Guide or theInstallation and User's Guide that came with the compute node or bladeserver.)

5. If an optional expansion unit is installed, remove the expansion unit. (Foradditional information about removing the expansion unit, see the Installationand User's Guide that came with the blade server).

6. Touch the static-protective package that contains the ServeRAID controller toany unpainted metal surface on any grounded rack component; then, removethe ServeRAID controller from the package.

The following illustration shows the ServeRAID controller.

7. Locate the connector for the ServeRAID controller on the compute node orblade server system board. See the Installation and Service Guide or theInstallation and User's Guide that came with the compute node or blade server.

8. Orient the connector on the ServeRAID controller with the connector on thesystem board; then, press the controller into the system board connector.

6. Using your fingers, move the retaining clips away from the ServeRAIDcontroller; then, lift the ServeRAID controller out of the system board connector.

Chapter 3. Updating the firmware and installing device drivers

This chapter contains general information about updating the controller firmwareand installing device drivers for the IBM ServeRAID H1135 controller.

After you install the ServeRAID controller, complete the following steps:

1. Make sure that the ServeRAID controller has the latest firmware. Periodicupdates are made available.

Using the LSI SAS2 MPT Controller Configuration ApplicationYou can use the LSI SAS2 MPT Controller Configuration Application to configurethe IBM ServeRAID H1135 controller and the storage devices in a pre-bootenvironment.

For your compute node or blade server, make sure that you are using the latestversions of device drivers, utilities, firmware code, baseboard managementcontroller (BMC), and BIOS or UEFI code. Hardware problemsTo determine whether an installation problem is caused by the hardware, performthe following tasks:

v Before you begin your system hardware installation activities, make sure thatyou have all the hardware devices that are required to support the compute nodeor blade server configuration that you plan to use. Include the followingpreinstallation requirements. For additional information, see the documentationthat comes with the devices that you are using.

– If the system configuration includes external devices, certain requirementsapply. For additional information, see “Using the ServeRAID controller” onpage 6.

– If the system configuration includes disk arrays, certain requirements apply tothe ServeRAID controller, For additional information, see Chapter 4,“Configuring the ServeRAID controller,” on page 17.

v Before you install the ServeRAID controller make sure that you are using acompute node or blade server that supports the ServeRAID controller.

v Make sure that the I/O modules are compatible with the target expansionadapters that you want to communicate with these I/O modules.

v Make sure that the ServeRAID controller is correctly installed in the computenode or blade server. For additional information, see the Installation and ServiceGuide or the Installation and User's Guide that comes with the compute node orblade server.

v Make sure that the compute node or blade server is correctly installed.

v Make sure that the utility device-driver parameters are correct.

v Make sure that all peripheral devices are correctly connected to the I/O modules,turned on, and operating correctly.

v For the blade server, make sure that an I/O module that supports SAS operationis correctly installed in I/O-module bay 3 or both I/O-module bays 3 and 4 of thesystem unit.






Software problemsTo determine whether the installation problem is caused by the software, performthe following tasks:

v Make sure that the correct device drivers are installed. To download or getinformation about the latest supported device drivers, utilities, anddocumentation, see http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/. Also see theInstallation and Service Guide or the Installation and User's Guide that came withthe compute node or blade server.

v Make sure that the BIOS or UEFI functional firmware and boot code in theServeRAID controller are at the latest levels.

v Make sure that you are using the correct expansion-adapter NVRAM settings forthe storage area network (SAN) and operating system.

System-configuration problemsTo determine whether the installation problem is caused by the systemconfiguration, perform the following tasks:

v Make sure that the I/O modules that support SAS operation are correctlyconfigured.

v Make sure that all compute node or blade server components are correctlyconfigured.

v Make sure that all parameters, internal devices, and external devices have beenenabled, where required. These devices might include the I/O module and itsinternal and external ports.

If you still have a system-configuration problem, you must determine whether thesystem board requires a special configuration. To determine whether the systemboard requires a special configuration, see the documentation that comes with yourcompute node or blade server, or contact your IBM technical-support representative.

SAS device problemsTo determine whether your problem is caused by an attached SAS device, performthe following tasks:

v For the blade server, make sure that an I/O module that supports SAS operationis correctly installed in one or more of the following I/O-module bay combinationsin the system unit:

– In I/O-module bay 3 of the BladeCenter unit

– In both I/O-module bays 3 and 4 of the system unit

Note: Installing a second I/O module in the BladeCenter unit provides a backupI/O module in case one I/O module fails. Both I/O modules must be of the sametype, in the previously specified I/O-module bay combinations in the BladeCenterunit.

v Make sure that the compute node or blade server is turned on.



v Make sure that the compute node or blade server ServeRAID controller settingsare the correct values:

– See the troubleshooting section of the documentation that comes with theapplicable device driver.

v Make sure that all parameters, internal devices, and external devices have beenenabled, where required. These devices might include the I/O module and itsinternal and external ports.

Particulate contaminationAttention: Airborne particulates (including metal flakes or particles) and reactivegases acting alone or in combination with other environmental factors such ashumidity or temperature might pose a risk to the device that is described in thisdocument. Risks that are posed by the presence of excessive particulate levels orconcentrations of harmful gases include damage that might cause the device tomalfunction or cease functioning altogether. This specification sets forth limits forparticulates and gases that are intended to avoid such damage. The limits must notbe viewed or used as definitive limits, because numerous other factors, such astemperature or moisture content of the air, can influence the impact of particulatesor environmental corrosives and gaseous contaminant transfer.
