Rigorous, independent evaluations from the Center for Children & Technology and the Harvard Business School document that our significant investment of technology and technical expertise is having a positive, measur- able impact on our school partners. It’s also a one-of-a-kind project: IBM is the only corporation anywhere to launch a full-scale, long-term effort to advance systemic education reform. “IBM’s Reinventing Education program has produced successful solutions that are dismantling long-standing barriers to public school reform—barriers like how teachers are trained, how information is shared and used, and how learning is measured. But more, this evaluation revealed that the intense partnership process which distinguished Reinventing Education from other school reform efforts led to real change in the way schools went about the business of teaching children.” –Center for Children and Technology’s three-year evaluation of IBM’s Reinventing Education Program ibm.com/ibm/ibmgives Reinventing Education Delivers Results Following the full deployment of IBM’s Reinventing Education activities in West Virginia, headlines across the state announced that students in grades 7 through 11 were making sub- stantial gains in all core academic subjects. Updated studies released in the spring of 2004 documented that West Virginia’s students are continuing to improve their academic scores. An independent evaluation of the pro- gram in Ireland documented a number of positive impacts of the project, including improved teacher confi- dence and competence in the use and integration of technology, improve- ments in the overall learning environment for students, better class- room management, improved teacher communication and collaboration, and

“There are very few examples of a sustained, sweeping long-term approach that attempts to really transform the nature of a social institution like education. IBM is a role model and a pioneer in that regard. Each one of these projects is not simply a local solution that works for that school system; each one of them is a process, a platform, that is transferable immediately all over the world.”

—Rosabeth Moss Kanter Professor Harvard Business School
