DB2 for i and IBM i 7.3

Major enhancements in DB2 for i deliver significant business value:

• Temporal Tables – History of rows–Data-centric, easily deployed, robust SQL point-in-time capability

• Generated Columns for auditing – Row level identity–Let DB2 for i maintain the who, what, & how a row came to be

• Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) built-in functions–Adding more analytics capabilities directly into DB2 for i

• And… all the TR enhancements delivered to IBM i 7.2–IBM i Services, DB2 JSON Store, LIMIT and OFFSET, and many more

Page 20: IBM i at the eart of cognitive solutions

IBM i 7.3 – Simplifying Insights and Intelligent Security

• Git and Orion application environments are being added to the IBM i Open Source suite of products, providing clients with more choice for their business solutions on IBM i.

• New enhancements to RPG and COBOL streamline and simplify development allowing developers to innovative more easily and manage their applications more efficiently.

• The more modern GUI interface of IBM i Navigator improves ease of use for system management tools and for monitoring performance.

• Much, much more

• DB2 for i Temporal Support allows clients to conduct accurate analysis of data within a specific historical time period and contrast that against current data sets

• New OLAP capability added to the SQL language on IBM i allows clients to perform more advanced analytics on their data

• Security Authority Collection provides guidance for establishing security levels based on usage of data and applications

• Planned and unplanned downtime from hours to minutes with PowerHA V7.2 for IBM i HyperSwap Cluster.

• New version of DB2 WebQuery for IBM i expands options for data sources including some Open Source data environments such as Postgres and Maria DB

Page 21: IBM i at the eart of cognitive solutions

Background: Security and Compliance - the Issue • Customers run many applications on a single partition

• No detailed knowledge of the applications… where is the data?– Data in DB2 or IFS … but where?

• Once found, how do you lock down security without application breakage?– What is the “minimum” authority level that can be granted for the end

user?

• Many customers have little to no idea what interfaces an application uses so the authority requirements cannot be determined

• Applications are shipped with excessive public authority (common problem) which leads to security exposures

• The problem: customers don’t change security, for fear of application breakage, leaving data exposed

Page 22: IBM i at the eart of cognitive solutions

22 © IBM Corporation, 2016

Solution: Authority Collection

• Build a Utility that captures pertinent data associated with an authority check– The collection covers all native IBM i file systems– Focus on capturing only unique instances of the authority check– Run-time performance, while the collection is active, will degrade minimally,

2-3% for the job– Storage consideration for long running authority collection

• The collection includes key pieces of information… (including)

“What authority does the system require to pass this authority check”

Minimizes riskwith high availability and reduced backup time from 15 hours to 5 seconds

50 percentfaster access to critical business figures speeds up decision-making processes

Increases IT efficiency and saves costs with improved scalability and fewer migrations

Solution components

The transformation: Rossmann’s retail managers need up-to-date sales figures to help match product ranges to consumer buying patterns, but existing systems struggled to keep up with the avalanche of data. Switching to IBM DB2 on IBM Power Systems servers brings super-fast responses, even during peak times, enabling informed decisions that help maximize revenue growth.Hardware
