iPad Design Considerations
Design reports for iPad resolution 1024 x 704
2 fingers required to scroll.
List box is replaced with drop-down list on the iPad
Consider size of touch regions
• Clickable lists and objects should have a minimum
comfortable height to press (Apple recommends 44 px)
• Chart areas may be too small to touch
13
Active Report Limitations
Object property limitations – Button height, pie chart angle etc.
Graphs
• No built in graphing engine
• Each graph needs to be rendered / stored in the MHTML file.
Drill Down
• Not truly supported
No ability to print Active reports from the iPad or the Laptop.
Intended to be consumed as individual files. No data driven
security
Cannot be consumed on iPhones, Android or other mobile devices
as of now.
Size
• Not meant as a distribution channel for detailed reports
• Designed for high level data views
• Ideally 5 to 10 MB maximum file size
14
Recommendations:
• Use the Native IBM Cognos Mobile iPad for consumption.
• Plan adequate development time due to cycling between the laptop
and iPad (can be time consuming)
• Evaluate your mobile email tool’s compatibility with .mht files.
• Leverage scheduling and bursting of content.
• Keep file sizes manageable at 5 to 10 MB. Ways to contain file
size:
Break down report into multiple reports.
Minimize number of charts.
Reuse the Active Report Variables
Push calculations and data consolidations in the
model/package where possible.
Use Layout Component References where possible.
15
Security Considerations / Recommendations
• Consider enforcing security policy on mobile devices (PIN).
• Set up an Access code for .mht files during development.
• How will the mobile devices get access to the BI server? (Intranet
Wi-Fi only, VPN over 3G etc.)
• Determine additional device management needs e.g. remote wipe.
• Tune parameters on the server: local storage encryption; length of
time to allow offline access.
• IBM Cognos Mobile ‘lease key’ mechanism.
• Store Active Report content in secured folders.
