The NEC opened in 1976 and was previously owned by Birmingham City Council. In 2009 the venue completed a £40 million improvement programme. In January 2015 the NEC was sold via a management buyout with backing from private equity firm, LDC . The transaction transferred the NEC into private ownership for the first time and allowed the business to react quicker to customers’ requirements. Revenues have increased by 17% year on year since the change in ownership.
The venue welcomes around two million visitors and over 34,000 exhibiting companies and over 500 events every year. It has 20 interconnecting halls, 34 conference suites, 200,000 sq meters of exhibition space making it 80% larger then UK’s largest exhibition venue. It holds a diverse range of exhibitions including the internationally renowned Crufts and the Clothes Show Live.
The Genting Arena, (approximately 0.6 miles from the hotel and a 12 minute walk) hosts large music concerts and is part of the NEC. Formerly the LG Arena, the venue has a 16,000 capacity and welcomes approximately 900,000 people each year.

NEC SUMMARY OF EVENTS
06
Birmingham Airport (BHX) is approximately 0.7 miles from the hotel (a 10 minute walk). The airport is also approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the NEC, Birmingham International railway station and the recently-developed Air-Rail Link.
Birmingham Airport is the UK’s seventh busiest airport and handles approximately 10 million passengers annually. The airport is the region’s premier gateway to mainland Europe, Scandinavia, North America, the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent. Over 50 airlines operate scheduled and charter services to more than 100 destinations, including New York and Dubai.
In August 2013, Air India started operating four flights a week between Birmingham Airport and Delhi. This is considered important for the city as India’s middle class is forecasted to take half a million tourist trips into Britain each year by 2020.
In July 2014, the 405-metre extension of the airport’s runway was completed. This project cost £40 million and was implemented to allow for longer-range direct services, which is forecasted to increase airline and passenger capacity.
In summer 2015, through a partnership between Caissa (a Chinese travel specialist) and VisitBritain (supported by London, Manchester and Birmingham), Birmingham Airport
will host a program of charter flights from Beijing, carrying almost four thousand Chinese tourists into the UK on package tours and contributing £19 million to the regional economy. This program will make Birmingham Airport the first airport outside London to offer direct flights to China.
Birmingham Airport has a spare capacity of 55 per cent, allowing for significant growth in passenger numbers.
Subject to HS2 going ahead, Birmingham Interchange and Birmingham Airport will undoubtedly become a national and international hub for business.
