Course Name/Grade Overview
Course DescriptionThis course provides advanced instruction in Chinese language and culture, and is the culminating class in the Chinese language curricular pathway. The main focus of this course is on language acquisition, and is taught exclusively in Chinese. It explores topics in advanced composition and conversation, with an emphasis on refining and integrating advanced grammar into daily communication beyond IB Chinese level 4. Students develop extensive and complex vocabulary, sentence structure, idioms and cultural understanding to perform communicative functions at close to native speaker level. Methods of instruction center around the core IB Chinese language themes (individuals & society, leisure & work, urban & rural environments) and feature advanced, daily in-depth study. IB Chinese 5 prepares advanced students for the IB Chinese/Mandarin exams. Students may also be prepared to take the AP Chinese Language & Culture exam.
