and nitrogen oxides (NOx) combine in the
presence of sunlight; NO2, which is formed as
NO
combines with oxygen in the air; and acid rain,
which is formed when sulfur dioxide or
nitrogen oxides react with water.

Explanation: Peaty and Marshy soils:
These types of soils are found in Kerala, coastal
track of Orissa, Sunderban area of W.B. When the
vegetation growing in such wet places dies, it
decomposes very slowly dues to excessive wetness
of soils and after several hundreds of year a layer
of partly decayed organic matter accumulates on
the surface, giving rise to such peaty and marshy
soils. These are black coloured, heavy and highly
acidic soils. When properly drained and fertilized,
these soils produce good crops of rice.

Explanation: i) Permaculture emphasises
traditional and new practices in which all the input
is produced by the farm itself, resulting in food
self-sufficiency. It originated as a design science for
small-scale farmers to create quantity produce,
ease their work and also to address environmental
degradation.
ii) Agroforestry is as an intensive land
management system that optimizes the benefits
from the biological interactions created when trees
and/or shrubs are deliberately combined with
crops and/or livestock.
iii) Aquaponics is a form of agriculture that
combines raising fish in tanks (recirculating
aquaculture) with soilless plant culture
(hydroponics). In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich
water from raising fish provides a natural fertilizer
for the plants and the plants help to purify the
water for the fish.
iv) Organic farming is a system which avoids or
largely excludes the use of synthetic inputs (such as
fertilisers, pesticides, hormones, feed, etc.) and to
the maximum extent feasible relies upon crop
rotations, crop residues, animal manures, off-farm
organic waste, mineral grade rock additives and
biological system of nutrient mobilisation and plant
protection.

Explanation: Under the Muslim Law (Shariat), the
father enjoys a dominant position. It also makes a
distinction between guardianship and custody. For
guardianship, which has usually reference to
guardianship of property, according to Sunnis, the
father is preferred and in his absence his executor.
If no executor has been appointed by the father,
the guardianship passes on the paternal
grandfather to take over responsibility and not that
of the executor. Both schools, however, agree that
father while alive is the sole guardian. Mother is
not recognised as a natural guardian even after the
death of the father. As regards rights of a natural
guardian, there is no doubt that father’s right
extends both to the property and person of the
child. Even when mother has the custody of minor
child father’s general right of supervision and
control remains. Father can, however, appoint
mother as testamentary guardian. Thus, though
mother may not be recognised as natural guardian,
there is no objection to her being appointed under
the father’s will.

names like minimum-security prison, open air

rule of an open prison is that the jail has minimum
security and functions on the self-discipline of the
inmates. Every state in India has a prison law, like
the Rajasthan Prisoners Rules and Andhra Pradesh

immediately eliminated by
developed countries. Developing
country members have until the end
of 2018 to do so or in the case of
cotton products by January 1, 2017,
with exceptions with respect to
support for producers of basic
agricultural products until the end of

these exceptions remain in place

decided by the presiding officer of the House.
Originally, the act provided
that the decision of the presiding officer is final and
cannot be questioned in
any court. However, in Kihoto Hollohan case2
(1993), the Supreme Court
declared this provision as unconstitutional on the
ground that it seeks to take
away the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and the
high courts. It held that
the presiding officer, while deciding a question
under the Tenth Schedule,
function as a tribunal. Hence, his decision like that
of any other tribunal, is
subject to judicial review on the grounds of mala
fides, perversity, etc. But,
the court rejected the contention that the vesting
of adjudicatory powers in the
presiding officer is by itself invalid on the ground of
political bias.

Explanation: The 49th Sveriges Riksbank prize in
economic sciences – commonly referred to as the
Nobel Prize for economics – has been awarded to
Richard H Thaler for his contributions to
behavioural economics. He was a key proponent of
the idea that humans do not act entirely rationally.
By applying insights from psychological research,
he helped the world better understand people’s
economic decision-making in particular. People
tend to be loss averse: they’d rather expect a
smaller payoff with the same risk, but cap their
losses. Another contribution of Thaler was the
concept of mental accounting: people don’t, it
turns out, think about their total lifetime welfare
when making financial decisions. Instead they focus
on the performance of individual decisions and are
less concerned with making savings if they are a
small percentage of what’s being spent.

Explanation: In a major move, the Reserve Bank of
India (RBI) has decided not to pursue a proposal for
introduction of Islamic banking in the country.
What is Islamic banking?
Islamic banking or Islamic finance or sharia-
compliant finance is banking or financing activity
that complies with sharia (Islamic law) and its
practical application through the development of
Islamic economics. Some of the modes of Islamic
banking/finance include Mudarabah (Profit and
loss sharing), Wadiah (safekeeping), Musharaka
(joint venture), Murabahah (cost plus), and Ijar
(leasing).
Sharia prohibits riba, or usury, defined as interest
paid on all loans of money (although some Muslims
dispute whether there is a consensus that interest
is equivalent to riba). Investment in businesses that
provide goods or services considered contrary to
Islamic principles (e.g. pork or alcohol) is also
haraam ("sinful and prohibited").

Explanation: Prohibition of Employment as Manual
Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013 came
into force on 6 December 2013 across India except
Jammu and Kashmir. The law prohibits the
employment of manual scavengers, the manual
cleaning of sewers and septic tanks without
protective equipment and the construction of
insanitary latrines. The law also provides
rehabilitation of manual scavengers and alternative
employment to them within the time bound
manner. From now onwards, the construction and
maintenance of the insanity latrines has became an
offence, therefore no one can be employed or
engaged as the manual scavenger. However
neither the state nor the centre is mandated under
the Bill to provide financial assistance for the
conversion of insanitary latrines. This may
adversely impact implementation of the Bill. The
District Magistrate and the local authority shall be
the implementing authorities. The identification of
the insanitary latrines and their conversion has not
been made time bound under the Act.
