How we Communicate


• CCOM - Applicable to A320 Family, A330/A340 Family, A380 and A350 aircraft

• Available as “Customised” or “Generic”

For all aircraft, including A300/A310 family operators.



First Steps


• FAA SAFO 09013 “Fighting Fires Caused By Lithium Type Batteries in Portable Electronic Devices” issued in June 2009 On A380 aircraft fitted with Portable Data Assistant (PDA) Charging locations specific procedure

introduced from Aug 2009

Requirement identified for such a procedure for other aircraft programs

The Maturing of the Procedure

• From August 2011 a generic “Guidelines on Lithium Battery Fires” was included in Cabin Crew Operating Manual (CCOM) for A320 family, A330/A340 family and A380 aircraft.

• Same instructions also included in the “Getting to Grips” for aircraft without a CCOM


Procedure based on SAFO 09013 Halon to extinguish the flame Water to cool down battery and

prevent adjacent cell thermal runaway

Cabin Crew Procedural Changes


Request to address Lithium Battery fires in OHSC Two reported events on Airbus Aircraft occurred in OHSC Specific procedure to address fires in “Enclosed Areas”

Airbus New Procedure: Consider any fire in OHSC is potential Li bat Fire Relocate the passengers and protect crew Extinguish flames and isolate the source Remove and secure the device that has caught fire



• Procedure needed to consider: Universal for all aircraft Easy to embody Space neutral and cost effective…..


• How do we secure a device post Lithium Battery Fire?


Standard Container filled with non-alcoholic liquid or water

Lavatory waste bin filled with non-alcoholic liquid or water

EITHER / OR

Receptacle placed in lavatory and surveyed regularly.

Flight Crew Procedures

Increased use of Lithium Batteries in the flight deck Key concern relates to use of Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)


Not exactly “Cabin Crew” procedures, but……..……… dealing with Lithium Battery fires requires a whole team effort!

Stand alone to enable it to be easily identified

Procedure should initially protect the crew

Transfer control (Pilot Flying/Pilot Monitoring)

Isolate the Smoke/Fire source

Airbus Proposed Procedure - Lithium Battery Fire In The Cockpit


CONTACT CABIN CREW to initiate the Lithium Battery fire procedure

Leaves Seat Puts Fire Gloves On

DON OXY MASK DON SMOKEHOOD USE HALON EXTINGUISHER

If there are Flames

PF PM

If Necessary transfer control

If the device can be removed from the cockpit TRANSFER THE DEVICE TO

THE CABIN

If the device cannot be removed from the cockpit POUR WATER ON DEVICE MONITOR IT

When the flames are suppressed or if there are no flames
