The Apparel & Textile Industries employ 35 million people

directly and 54.85 million people indirectly, and is the second

largest provider of employment after agriculture, contributing

14% to the industrial production, 4% to the GDP and 17% to the

country's export earnings. With the domestic sector of Clothing

and Textiles expected to be around US$ 70 billion, allied areas

of the industry, especially fashion, retail, fashion

communications, lifestyle accessories, luxury products etc. are

also expected to rapidly expand and increase being a market

dominated by “YOUTH” of about 430 million. The rapid growth

of the International fashion industry has overwhelming

economic influence. Domestically, this industry plays a crucial

role in contributing to the industrial output of the nation and its

consumption, apart from generating substantial employment

for the skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled segments of the work

force. With this level of envisioned growth in the International

and Indian Fashion Industry, the industry needs designers -

technical and strategic designers-, design managers and

fashion professionals with more in-depth and broad base

knowledge & skills relating to “the business of fashion” itself.

Considering these evolving trends there exists a need for

programmes that are vocationally apt and industry focused.

Envisioned growth of the Indian Apparel Industry will need over

one million merchandisers, marketing and design

professionals, strategic design managers, product development

experts, production managers and technologists with more

contemporary knowledge and skills. IAM is positioned as a

multi-varsity to fill the need gap as an institute focusing on the “

business side of fashion “.

Indian Apparel and

Textile industry has

grown manifold and

stands at US$ 62

billion today. It is

estimated to touch US$

115 billion by the year

2015 comprising of

domestic market share

of US$ 60 billion and

an export market share

of US$ 55 billion.

Rise & Rise of Indian Fashion & Lifestyle Industries

The present fashion industry boasts of several talented designers who are

well known for their expertise in their respective domains, not only in the

national, but in the international arena as well. India is one of the oldest

civilizations in the world, presenting itself as the converging point for a large

number of cultural groups professing varied customs and traditions. India is

a country which is founded on diversity – the people love to celebrate round

the year. Apparel & lifestyle statements and the Indian festivals royal

celebrations have a lot to do with each other. Fashion designers are inspired

to experiment with a large number of diverse options. What is noteworthy in

this context is the fact that no matter how large the array of options there are

for the designers, their final designs always portray an element of culture and

emotion that pulsate in the varied consumer markets of India. As more and

more fashion designers and apparel manufacturers recognize the potential

of the country and with the Indian economy sustaining rapid growth. the

consumerism in fashion has finally dawned . The present domestic market

size is estimated at Rs.1,50,000 Cr with the potential to reach 300,000 Cr by

2015. The Apparel exports are also bound to grow at a rapid pace . The

generally adopted way of dressing up in the traditional clothing is giving way

to the adoption of a new metrosexual way of dressing which is wooing the

GenNext. Fashion Designers and the print and electronic media have

contributed substantially to the spread of fashion as a driving force, both

among Indian consumers and selectsegments of Western and South East

Asian markets.

The Apparel industry is now open to innovation, new market development

and aggressive product development while widening the fabric base through

imports as well. The industry has crossed US$11.2 billion as of 2009-10 and

is poised to cross US$ 20 billion in exports by 2015. The industry has

ambitious plans to notch up US$ 25 billion and also create world beating

brands apart from being a “creative manufacturer” to the world.

The Indian Fashion

Industry has certainly

come off age since the

days when all that it

could muster were the

names of just a few

designers like Rohit Bal,

Tarun Tahiliani, and Ritu

Beri in the circuit.

Message of Vice- Chancellor, IGNOU

Message of Director, SOVET, IGNOU

The School of Vocational Education and Training established in August 2007 aims at

providing Education and Training for skill development and to meet the vocational

as well as technical requirements for the economic development of the country.

Demand driven and value added courses/programmes are offered through the

School, targeting the formal and informal sectors. The School will develop courses

that encourage vertical mobility of vocational education and training. Research is

another priority area for identifying societal and industrial needs.

The School of Vocational Education and Training in collaboration with “Institute of Apparel

Management” is all set to offer Bachelors and Masters Degree Programmes in Fashion related

areas. The Indian textile and fashion industry is the second largest employment sector after

agriculture and therefore, this joint initiative is bound to expand the scope and nature of

vocational education beyond its conventional meaning. This will also re-define vocational

education as “Professional Education”, as last few decades has witnessed considerable change

with revival of the new sectors i.e. fashion, lifestyle, retail & brand. The vocational education has

found its much sought after place. Today most of the vocational education & training has

transformed into professional careers in the changing global context. We hope that this new

partnership will provide knowledge & skills for contemporary industrial needs and will fulfill the

professional requirements that are required by the leading fashion and apparel industries

today. This initiative with “Institute of Apparel Management” will set-up a new benchmark for

quality education in the country.

About Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC)

The parent organization of IAM is “Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC)”. The Council is a nodal agency

entrusted with the promotion of readymade garments from India promoted by the Ministry of Textiles,

Government of India. Council has more than 8000 apparel exporters as its members who contribute 3% of the

world trade in clothing and more than 8% of India's total Exports. AEPC has been continuously involved in the

task of promoting of readymade garments exports by:

In its constant endeavor to cater for trained manpower requirement of the apparel industry, AEPC established

“Apparel Training & Design Centre” in 1991 with the mission to upgrade the technical skills of the human

resources employed across the Garment Industry. Keeping in view the growing demand of the apparel

industry several ATDCs have been set up at different parts of the country where the garment industry is

concentrated.

Currently, there are more than 60 ATDC centers functioning all over India. ATDC offers 8 flagship

programmes in production technology, pattern making, apparel information technology etc. and 6 core

courses in different skills and competencies for the shop floor workforce. Having successfully established

training institutes to meet the requirements at the shop floor and supervisory levels, it was also observed that

there is a need felt in the availability and requirement of manpower for apparel industry particularly in the

areas of apparel management, merchandising, vendor management, and retail specific to the apparel and

fashion business.

In view of this, the “AEPC SOCIETY FOR HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT” established an institution of

higher learning to cater this requirement of the industry. The Institute of Apparel Management established in

2007 and located in Apparel House in Gurgaon is now positioned as India's first multi-varsity for Apparel

Industry. IAM has now two campuses, the first one at Gurgaon and second campus at Sanpada, Navi Mumbai.
