• One in every third Indian is prone to ‘lifestyle diseases’

• These diseases (heart ailments, diabetes, cancer) kill more millions more than wars and terrorist attacks!

• Indians succumb to diabetes & heart attacks 5-10 years earlier than their western counterparts

• Heart attacks at 20 are very common in India, especially if hereditary

• Estimated loss incurred : $236.6 Billion by 2015 due to unhealthy lifestyle and faulty diet

The future of the country is in peril

A Country filled with Ailing patients?

Defuse it now, by taking care of the most important machine, your body

Ask your audience to ask themselves

• How many times do you eat out during the week?

• When hunger strikes, do you reach for the local roadside vada-pav or samosa?

• How many times do we resort to ordering Pizza (with extra cheese) in the evenings?

• If you raid your kitchen, will you find chocolates, cola and mithai OR brown bread, fresh fruits and juices?

• How often do you exercise?

• Do you eat one portion of fresh fruit and vegetables daily?

• What will your loved ones go through if you suffer a heart attack now? Think about them, before eating the next packet of chips.

Now do you really think you are healthy, wealthy and wise?

Page 8: iAlive Volunteer Training

A healthy lifestyle will make all the difference

• A large amount of money is being spent on developing world-class health care facilities for ‘patients’

• But as the old adage goes… ‘Prevention is better than Cure’

• Why not simply consume nutritious and wholesome food & avoid harmful junk

• This will ensure that we stay in the pink of health and enjoy an improved lifestyle

• It will help you realize your life's goals and be there with your loved ones when they need you

• It will help India generate an able workforce to emerge as a Global Power

Page 9: iAlive Volunteer Training

Let us enlighten people

• You don't have to drastically change your lifestyle to live healthily. You just need to make a few tweaks

• Tell your audience that by tweaking their eating habits a little, if they can live a happier life, why not make the change right now??

• Provide the Health Manual which suggests simple but effective guidelines to improve the general well-being of an individual

Page 10: iAlive Volunteer Training

Educate

• Every year and every day we say to ourselves "tomorrow I will start to eat healthier". Unfortunately, tomorrow goes by and we still have the same old eating habits.

• You will have to educate Family/Friends/Audience that how making little changes in their eating habits can make a huge difference.

The choice is yours

Body Mechanics

Inside a well nourished body, the soul remains longer

Ask your audience to make themselves more aware about their “BODY”.

Make your audience aware about sources of information, like local organizations, websites etc.

Page 12: iAlive Volunteer Training

Cholesterol ?

A blood test is the ONLY way to detect high cholesterol

Cholesterol is found in every cell in your body. And your body makes all the cholesterol it needs.

Any cholesterol in your diet is extra and it's up to no goodWhen there's higher levels of cholesterol in your blood, you may develop fatty deposits in your blood vesselsEventually, these deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries.Your heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the risk of a heart attack. Decreased blood flow to your brain can also cause a stroke.

Page 13: iAlive Volunteer Training

What should I eat ?

Keep different types of fruits in refrigerator & also ask your audience to carry them while in travel, so that the same can be consumed instead of some junk food whenever hungry.

Avoid Soda/cold drinks which have adverse health effects, instead drink juices as they taste good & and are good for health.

Salt increases Blood Pressure

Salt increases the risk of high BP, which can lead to heart attacks

How can you keep a check on salt ?

•Avoid processed/ready to eat foods

•Replace Table salt with Rock salt

•Use alternate seasoning like lemon etc.

•Avoid Papads, Pickles, Chutneys

•Ask your cook to use less salt in daily preparation of food

Page 15: iAlive Volunteer Training

What should I eat ?

• Replace Vanaspati/Groundnut Oil/Desi Ghee with Olive/Sunflower/Safflower oil for cooking. The food will taste the same and will not have as much adverse effect on health as the other types of oil. Avoid eating deep fried food. Prefer baking/grilling/shallow frying.

• Add Soya bean to your food as this has many health benefits. You can mix soya bean in atta. Mix soya bean with wheat before grinding.

Page 16: iAlive Volunteer Training

Water

• Consume at least 2 litres of water every day

• Keep a bottle with your where ever you go

Benefits of drinking enough water:

• Water flushes out toxins from our bodies, which can otherwise cause dehydration leading to tension, pains & headaches

• Water keeps our joints well oiled, thereby assisting in preventing diseases like arthritis in later life

• Water hydrates your skin. Combats skin disorders like eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, wrinkles & spots

How to lose the extra fat“Our belly is ungrateful, it always forgets we gave it

something”

Start your day with a healthy breakfast, as your body has been fasting for 10-12 hours since dinner. • Have fruits, custards, egg-based puddings

and jellies; minimize on fatty desserts like cakes, sweets, rabdi, cream etc.

• Have vegetables, sprouts, salads, skimmed milk, fish, chicken, egg etc.

• Avoid oily curries, sugar, fried items etc

Page 18: iAlive Volunteer Training

Exercise“Those who do not find time for exercise, will have to find

time for illness”

Encourage people to follow these simple steps

•Climb steps instead of using an elevator

Page 19: iAlive Volunteer Training

Exercise

• Cycle when you get time

• A Brisk walk for a little distance before you catch your train/bus/cab will do you good

• Dance to your favorite songs

• Yoga : Even people in the west are turning to Yoga to keep healthy. It is not only a form of prevention, but also cures various diseases by strengthening the mind and body

A Cigarette in your hand, and you are a dead man

• Advise your audience on how smoking can adversely impact not only the smoker’s health, but also of those around him. Children whose parents smoke are more susceptible to CANCER

SMOKING KILLS

Page 21: iAlive Volunteer Training

Alcohol can be destructive

“Beer doesn’t only go to your head”

And benefits are ?

Page 22: iAlive Volunteer Training

Stress

“There is more to life than increasing its speed”Stress is created in your mind. It arises when you try to do

something you can’t do, or don’t do what you are supposed to do

How to tackle stress?• Yoga, Meditation etc.

• Outdoor activities, sports

• Discuss problems with family and

friends

Health Check-ups

When was the last time you went for one?

Health check-ups should be done every year even if you seem healthy

If you are above 20, get one done right away. Heart attacks are increasingly prevalent at this age these days

There is no boon like early diagnosis. It prevents complications

Page 24: iAlive Volunteer Training

preach ‘HEALTHY LIVING’
