ABoUt the BronZe QUILL AWArdThe IABC/Chicago Bronze Quill Award, formerly the Spectra Award, credits the finest work from all com-munication disciplines—from marketing and public relations to writing and digital media. The Bronze Quill program provides Chicago-area communicators the opportunity to have their work critiqued by expert judges from across the country.

An award-winning entry is one that demonstrates:

• A strategic thought process, with clearly defined goals and objectives and an understanding of the audience

• Measurable results against those objectives

• A value-added contribution to the client or organization

The award solicits entries from internal departments, agencies and independent practitioners who wish to add credibility to their practices.

The process starts with a call for entries. IABC members and non-members submit entries that include a work plan and a work sample. Entrants submit their work to one or more of the 27 categories offered by the IABC/Chicago’s Bronze Quill program.

The program experienced two significant milestones in 2012. To keep up with the constantly evolving communication landscape, IABC/Chicago expanded its awards program this year to include digital and interactive marketing campaigns.

IABC/Chicago also premiered its online awards sys-tem, allowing entrants to submit their entries digi-tally. This process eliminated the need for printing, binders, shipping and other costly materials, and allowed judges to view entries anywhere there was an Internet connection.

the JUdgIng proCessIABC sets rigorous standards for judging communi-cation projects, requiring a minimum of two expert IABC judges to review each entry. IABC/Chicago worked with the IABC/Pittsburgh and IABC/Phoenix chapters to judge this year’s entries.

Judges score each entry on a seven-point scale. The work plan/work sample scoring ratio varies depend-ing on the category. The work plan is judged sepa-rately for strategic approach, objective-setting and other steps involved in designing a communication campaign. The work sample is judged based on how

well it fits the work plan and campaign objectives. Creativity also plays a major role in the judging.

The judges’ scores are combined to produce one of three results:

1. Entries scored 5.75 or higher on the seven-point scale receive an Award of Excellence, the highest award.

2. Entries scored between 5.25 and 5.75 receive an Award of Merit.

3. Entries scored below 5.25 do not receive an award.

AWArds presentAtIon

The Envelope, Please...

As a nonprofit professional association with a long-standing tradition of supporting excellence in busi-ness communication, IABC has created an award that is not easy to earn. Entrants are not competing against one another. Rather, they are judged inde-pendently to standards established by the awards committee. Not every category has a winner, and categories can have multiple winners if more than one entrant receives an award-winning score. It’s all about getting it right, from the strategy to the results.

IABC/Chicago honors the following communicators for earning the prestigious Bronze Quill Award.

2012 Best In shoWThe Best in Show Award recognizes the very best corporate communication plan and supporting material pro-duced by communicators in the Chicago area in 2011. The award goes to the entry that receives the highest average score among all of this year’s entries. Best in Show is announced the night of the event.

KAren UtterBACK VoLUnteer AWArdThe IABC/Chicago Advisory Committee is proud to present the inaugural Karen Utterback Volunteer Award. This award recognizes a seasoned professional who donates his or her time and talent to further the professional communications practice. The IABC/Chicago board of directors will honor one outstanding individual at our Bronze Quill Awards banquet each year.

Selection criteria include dedication to strategic communications excellence, assistance to the organization and its members, and years of volunteer service. IABC/Chicago takes great pride in honoring this individual, who demonstrates the heart and spirit of the IABC organization.

The award honors the memory of IABC/Chicago member Karen Utterback, who died unexpectedly of natural causes in 2009 as she was about to begin her second term as IABC/Chicago chapter president. Karen’s energy and passion for IABC/Chicago contributed greatly to the chapter’s success during her service on the board of directors.
