disequilibriumDisequilibrium is a necessary preconditions for energetic activity (self-organization). Prigogine reconciled the apparent contradiction between the mechanistic and non-linear descriptions of the world, by simply holding that some times things in the world operate like machines, these are stable closed systems and they operate in a states of equilibrium, while other phenomenabelong to non-linear open systems and within them disequilibrium is a necessary conditionfor the emergence of order, and a localized decrease in entropy. This apparent violation ofthe second law of thermodynamics is permitted because the second law pertains toaverages in closed systems. While energy systems like the ISS’s is necessarily stable and conservative, energetic urban systems are seething with chance in a state far-from equilib-rium, where energy is exchanged between system and environment in a non-conservative manure allowing small fl uctuations, or instabilities to be amplifi ed and reinforced to produce a highly ordered new states.
![Page 34: IaaCGss11_site analysis_block6](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020501/568c46961a28ab19138b63d9/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
variationIn biology, evolution refers explicitly to mechanisms by which new species emerge fromrandom mutation and out-compete existing species. More generally, evolution describesthe process of overall change in complex systems resulting from the selection andpropagation of successful variations. Again, we return to the necessity of “noise” or chaosin evolving systems as the source of variation and difference. In fact, Christopher Langtonsuggests that this reliance on chaos means that systems exhibiting edge conditions canhave a selective advantage over other systems because they have access to the richestand most complex milieu to select from.
connectivityFurthermore, isolation stabilizes a system as the most successful species quickly saturate the region, and the homogenization effectively removes variation and the potential for new species emergence, a process referred to as speciation. Hence, connectivity also plays a large role in system evolution, because it is a source of perturbation and leads to the cre-ation of new niche conditions that new species may emerge to fi ll.
![Page 35: IaaCGss11_site analysis_block6](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020501/568c46961a28ab19138b63d9/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Energy or vitality is a capcity to act or be activeWhile energy systems may be closed and conservativeAn energetic system is locally unstable because it participates in multi-scalar and manifold system of exchangewithin a local and global milue. unlike stable urban systems where change is gradual and predictable, energetic ones jump in spurts between stable and unstable states.ie. energy fl ows in disrupting stability and introducing opportunity in the form of variation.variation then is a precondition and consequence of an energetic productionconnectivity is also a precondition because isolation stabilizes a system as the most successful species quickly saturate the region, and the homogenization effectively removes variation as well as the potential for emergence, a process referred to in biology as speciation.
proposal
Layers of connection and difference generally describe the post-industrial urban condition of 22@ creative rezoning as indus-trial space is appropriated cheaply for diverse program, functionally blocks once dominated by industry become fragmented and a condition of mass difference becomes manifest. This however results in the productions of economic niche conditions that are produced and fi lled by new development. However this stabilizing trend tends to raise cost of living, replace creative energy with profi t-oriented enterprise, and displace community of young artists/creative professionals.
we propose a systematic destabalization of block by deploying and embedding intellegence in the environment that forms a layer of real-time information that measures shifting fi eld of potential. be-cause by perpetuating a state of fl ux we favor those urban participants that can respond the quick-est, can take advantage of distributedforms of real-time intellegence.
