    Methodology

    The2012IAInstituteSalarySurveywasconductedfromJulytoNovember2012.

    MembersoftheIAInstitute,IxDAandsigia-lwereinvitedtoparticipate.Alinktothe

    surveywasalsopromotedviatheIAInstitutehomepage,newsletterandTwitter

    account.Atotalof309responseswerecollected.Respondentswhodidnotenterasalaryrangewerefilteredoutforsalarycalculationpurposes.Youmaydownloadthe

    expandedresultsfromhttp://iainstitute.org.Weremovedcitydatafromtheresultsdue

    toconcernsabouttheprivacyofindividualsinplaceswhereasmall,easilyidentifiable

    populationofrespondentslive.Alistofcitiesisavailableinthecommentssectionanda

    narroweranalysisbylocationisavailablebyrequest.

    nineteenquestionscoveringsalary,age,gender,education,benefits,typicaltasks,

    managementandjobsatisfaction.Additionalopenendedresponseswerecollectedtohelpillustratetheresults,includingadditionaljobtitlesandbenefitsnotincludedinour

    survey,previouspositionsheld,coursesordegreeprogramstakenandanyadditional

    informationtherespondentwishestocontribute.

    AllfigureswererepresentedinUSdollars.Acurrencyconverterwasprovidedinthe

    surveyforthosewhousenon-UScurrency.Sincerespondentsgaveusasalaryrange

    insteadofanexactsalaryfigure,itisimpossibletoestimateatrueaverageormedian

    salary.Inouranalysis,wehaveestimatedthemedianforvariousdatapointsbytaking

    themidpointofthesalaryrangeapersonselectedandthenaveragingthatfigurefor

    variousdatapoints,eliminatingthe"Over$200,000"and"Under$10,000"groups,

    whichdonothaveamidpoint.Wealsopresentmediansalaryestimates,basedonmidpoints,forcomparisonpurposes,butitisbettertoreadthesurveyresultsinterms

    ofapercentagethatfallswithinarangeratherthanthinkingintermsofaspecificsalary.

    13.3%ofthetotalresponses.

    TherangesbetweenUSD$100-109,999,USD$80,000-89,999andUSD$70,000-

    79,000weresecond,thirdandfourthhighest.

    ThetopfiverangesclusteredbetweenUSD$60,000andUSD$109,000,

    representing48.2%ofthetotal.

    Usingmidpoints,theaveragesalarywasestimatedtobeUSD$99,152.The

    mediansalarywasUDS$94,999.

    Usingmidpointsisinexact;particularlysincethetopandbottomrangesdonot

    haveidentifiablemidpoints.Whenexcludingthetopandbottomranges,the

    averagesalaryisUSD$96,744,or2.4%lower,thanwhentheserangesare

    included.

    SalaryratesappeartobejustunderUSD$6,000peryearhigherthanlastyear's

    report,aconsiderablechangesincethepreviousyearwhenaveragesalaryhad

    droppedbyUSD$2,000.

    weremanyfewerresponses,makingthedeclinedifficulttosupport.

    females.Indicatingapossiblelossofgenderparity.Theaveragesalarydifference

    betweenmenandwomenofUSD$2,376haswidenedversusthesalaryleadfor

    menofUSD$1,619in2011.Thiswascuriousbecausemenandwomenoccupy

    level,4.9%versus3.1%ofmalerespondents,maleswhoareCEOstendtoearnmorethanfemaleCEOs.Also,MenwithPhDdegreestendtoearnmorethan

    womenwithPhDs.Thesetwofactorscouldexplainthedisparityinaverage

    salary.

    EducationLevel:

    Thisyear,weaddedanewseriesofquestionsabouteducation,includingnamesof

    schools,degreeprogramsandcertificates.Theseresponsesareincludedinthe

    AppendixandwillbeincorporatedinourSchoolsTeachingIApageonthewebsitein

    2013.

    ThehighestlevelofeducationalattainmentforthemajorityofrespondentsisaMaster'sDegree(50.0%),followedbyBachelor'sDegree(30.5%)andSome

    GraduateSchool(8.1%).95.5%ofrespondentshaveatleastaBachelor'sDegree. 64.9%ofrespondentspursuedpost-baccalaureatedegreesand/orcertificates.

    totalrespondents,figuresindicatethatonaveragetheyearnnearly30.0%morethanthosewithMaster'sDegreesand42.4%morethanthosewithBachelor's

    Degrees. SevenrespondentsindicatedtheirhighesteducationalattainmentwasHigh
