Who We AreSince its inception as the John Spence Nursery in 1971, RPA Newborn Care has expanded and developed into a world class neonatal care department, offering the highest level of intensive care. Every year, extraordinary milestones are reached by the special babies we care for.

Based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (“RPA”) in Camperdown, RPA Newborn Care is the intensive care unit for sick full-term and premature babies born at RPA and babies born and transferred from other hospitals around NSW.

What We DoRPA Newborn Care also looks after babies with an illness following birth; such as respiratory distress, low blood sugar levels, jaundice and congenital abnormalities. Many of our babies are born full-term; some have suffered serious complications at birth.

Our role extends beyond the intensive care environment to provide many support services for the mother, baby and family, including:

• Expert paediatric consultation to mothers at risk during pregnancy.

• Resuscitation of babies in the labour ward, theatre and birth centre; doctors from RPA Newborn Care attend all caesarean deliveries.

• Care of all well infants born at RPA including the Well Baby check prior to discharge.

• Ongoing parent education and information.

Our department includes three distinctive areas: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for babies who are critically ill, High Dependency Unit, and the Special Care Nursery. The babies are placed in one or more of these areas, depending on how much nursing and medical care they need. Often a baby will be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, followed by the high dependency unit then transferred to the nursery before finally going home. Their stay varies from days to months after they are born.

Our AimOur main objective is to ensure that every baby gets the best possible start in life. To ensure this our “graduates” are followed up for up to eight years following their stay at RPA Newborn Care. We also strive to provide as much support as possible to parents, knowing how difficult and stressful this period can be for parents and families.

Life saving equipment is crucial for the treatment and care provided at RPA Newborn Care. This equipment has a limited life span and is expensive to replace so funding is critical to ensure the best and most up to date equipment is available and the best treatments are implemented.

When I approach a child, he inspires in me two sentiments, Tenderness for what he is and respect for what he may become.
