President’s Welcome

On behalf of the committee of Canowindra Swimming Club, I would like to take this opportunity in welcoming you and your family to our club. Canowindra has a great reputation of being a warm, friendly club, one in which the committee are striving to maintain. As a club we belong to the Mountain and Plains Swimming Area, Swimming NSW and Swimming Australia. Club nights cannot run without the involvement of all parents and senior members. We need to be actively involved, to make club nights and activities run smoothly. All current members are encouraged to offer guidance to those who are new, and unsure of our procedures, as well as making them feel welcome and a part of our club. This season, the club will introduce individual Age Champions and runners up, for the following age groups, 8yrs & under, 9 - 16 yrs and seniors. Points will be allocated to swimmers for placing in their individual events across the club championships. The points will be accumulated, with the highest pointscorer crowned champion of their respective age group.

The club continues to move forward inline with other swim clubs, and this year sees the introduction of entering club nights online, through the swimming club website. This will hopefully streamline the entry process, and help eliminate any misunderstandings, which occurred in previous seasons.

Once again our annual carnival was a huge success, not just from a swimming perspective, it was also financially rewarding for the club. Many thanks to the people involved and contributing to its success. Our club Carnival this season is scheduled for 12th February 2017, and I urge all of our members to be a part of this event and demonstrate their support for the club. The carnival is the biggest fundraiser for the club.

I encourage you to become actively involved in the club, to make it stronger for all. I wish you all the best for the upcoming season.

Chris Rowston is the club coach, conducting training sessions on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

This decision will be made before 5.00pm on the club day. If unsure please phone after 5pm the Canowindra Pool 63441264 to check if the club night has been cancelled.

The Committee Members will decide when a Club Night should be abandoned due to inclement weather and the conditions deemed unsafe for swimming. Should Cub night be cancelled, entries do not carry over to the following week, swimmers must re-enter for the next week.

This is a great way, for the parents of younger swimmers in particular, to learn about swimming as a sport. New parents will be made very welcome.

It is expected parents who do not take up a position at the beginning of the night, will relieve some of these positions throughout the night, to give all parents a break and an opportunity to watch their children swim.

The committee has the right to alter the swimming program if necessary to suit the needs of the Club, particularly if the night’s program appears to be running behind schedule.

All events, apart from the Spoon and relay events, will be scratch events, whereby all swimmers will start their event at the sound of the starting signal. The Spoon and relay events will be handicapped events.

All swimmers will swim an initial time trial for each event, whereby they will be seeded into heats for the club night’s program, pursuant to their best recorded time, for that particular event.

Starting Procedure once the competitor is behind their block:

The starter will give a long whistle to signal competitors to take their position on the blocks, or in the water for backstroke or when medley relays are being swum.

The starter will then give the precautionary command “take your marks” and competitors will immediately take up their starting positions at the front of the blocks, or in the water starting position for backstroke.  They must then remain stationary.

When all competitors are stationary the starter will give the starting signal.

Canowindra Swimming Club follows all rules set down by FINA, the world’s governing Swimming Authority. On club nights we will not disqualify, but speak with children who have stroke deficiencies, and help swimmers to follow the rules, to ensure they do not get disqualified at representative meets, or the Club Championships.

Page 8: i. Web viewVICE PRESIDENT Matthew Rice . mattrice7878@outlook.com. SECRETARY. ... No criticism by word or action. ... Chris Rowston is the club coach,

If you have entered and fail to swim on a given club night, that entry doesn’t count as a swim, you must swim to qualify.

If a club night is washed out and you have entered, this will count as having swum for that night.

To qualify for the Club Championships, a swimmer must have competed six times in each stroke, over the course of the season. This only equates to 6 nights out of a total of 15 club nights to qualify.

Club Championships will be conducted at the end of the season, from 24thth February 2017 to 10th March 2017.

For the purpose of calculating points, best times are updated weekly.

Venue to be advised, once finalised.

Presentation Night has been scheduled for 24th March 2017, which will also include the Annual General Meeting, when all Executive positions will be filled for the following season.

This rule is originally from the 1950’s, when Swimming Club first started, and the club continues to carry on the tradition today.

The most important rule about the “Spoon” is, if a swimmer improves their time by more the 1 second they are ineligible to progress any further.

The winner of each semi progresses to the Final, handicapped in the same manner according to their times. The winner of the Spoon is the one who touches first, providing they have not improved their time by too much.

If there were 72 swimmers in the heats, therefore 12 heats, then the first 2 swimmers would progress to the semis, creating 6 semis.

After the 25m freestyle heats have been swum, the first two or three place getters are placed into semi finals, depending on the number of swimmers.

The handicapping system works like this: if the times of the six heat swimmers are 28,26,24,24,23 & 22 then the swimmers would leave the blocks at Go,2,4,4,5 & 6.

The Spoon, or 25m freestyle, is the only handicapped race still remaining at Swimming Club.
