What: Teacher Training Workshop
Where: AIS Saket
When: July 25, 2013
More than 40 Amitasha teachers
participated in a ‘Teacher
Training Workshop’ organ-
ized by Amity Institute of Education
(AIE) for teachers working for less priv-
ileged children. The workshop, themed
‘Teaching through Innovative Tech-
niques and Methods’ advocated innova-
tions in the teaching-learning process.
It is the vision of Dr Ashok K. Chauhan,
Founder President, Amity Universe and
Dr (Mrs) Amita Chauhan, Chairperson,
Amity Group of Schools to bridge the
education inequity between the
privileged and the less privileged. The
workshop organised by AIE was a step
forward in that direction.
The teacher training workshop was
attended by more than 70 teachers from
different NGOs across Delhi/NCR. The
participating NGOs included; Amitasha,
Atulasha, Child Survival India, Chetna,
Little Ones Public School, Mobile
Crèches, Khushi Shikshantra, Ank and
Community Aid & Sponsorship
Program (CASP). Each participant was
awarded a certificate of participation.
Spread over three sessions, the work-
shop inspired the participating teachers
to undergo a process of retrospection
and adopt innovative techniques in
teaching various subjects like English,
Hindi, environmental sciences and
mathematics. The teachers were moti-
vated to foster creativity in classrooms
and enhance the teaching-learning
process through activities like brain
storming, mind mapping and discovery
learning. The use of crossword puzzles,
nature walks, field trips, and sand-and-
clay for teaching simple concepts of
mathematics, were suggested to the
teachers. The role of reading, writing
and speaking was explained in creative
ways to make English more interesting
as a subject. The teachers enjoyed the
workshop and participated actively dur-
ing the interaction and feedback ses-
sions. “It was a great learning experience
for me. I want to apply all the techniques
learnt here, in my class in order to max-
imize the learning of my students,”
averred Asha, English teacher, Ami-
tasha. Dr Manorama Saxena, Coordina-
tor, Amitasha had words of appreciation
too, “The workshop greatly benefited
Amitasha teachers as they learnt new
and innovative ways of teaching.”
The teacher-training workshop organ-
ised by AIE, will go a long way in en-
hancing the skills of the teachers,
thereby grooming better future citizens
of the country. G T

Stream selection. Check. Subject
combination. Check. Best bud-
dies… Oh no! This is some-
thing so out of your control. Have all
your friends taken up streams com-
pletely different from yours and your
worst fear about ending up in the
same class as the girl who called you
names last year, come true? Relax,
things aren’t as terrible as they ap-
pear. With a little help from these tips
and oodles of optimism and smiles,
you are sure to have an overflowing
friend circle by the end of the first
term!
Tip 1: To make a good impression,
hygiene is extremely important.
Brush, wash, sport a neat hairstyle
and smell nice because you don’t
want to be nicknamed skunk on the
very first day of the term.
Tip 2: Listen more than you talk! In-
stead of chatting continuously and
bragging about yourself, try to hear
what the other person has to say. Add
your own thoughts and opinions but
don’t hijack the conversation.
Tip 3: Smile a while! The shortest
distance between new friends is a
smile. Everyone likes and appreciates
this sweet and small curve. Some-
thing small like putting on a sugar
coated smile may not seem to count,
but it does tell others you’re happy
and everyone wants to be around peo-
ple who spread positive vibes.
Tip 4: Crack jokes and don’t be afraid
to make fun of yourself because hav-
ing a good sense of humour is a great
way to win over friends. But be cau-
tious not to joke at the expense of oth-
ers or you might end up being the
target next time they have a joke
marathon.
Tip 5: Try not to judge people; do not
have preconceived notions about oth-
ers. You never know, the girl who you
thought never talks might be the fun-
niest you’ve ever met!
Tip 6: Complimenting people is the
key to success here. People love com-
pliments. Telling somebody that they
look good may not only make their
day but also open up new doors of
friendship. Of course, you don’t want
to overdo it and give out wrong
signals!
At the end of the day, all you really
need to do is be true to yourself and
stand up for what you believe in.
Don’t pretend to be something you
are not or mould yourself the way
others want you to be. Have an open
mind and try involving yourself in
whatever others are doing.
If you go looking for a friend, you’re
going to find they’re very scarce. If
you go out to be a friend, you’ll find
them everywhere.G T
