lnslruclions for Gompleting the ApplicotionMost programs of the University Graduate School use the follow-ing deadlines to ensure consideration of an application for admis-sion: January 15 for the fall semester, September 1 for the springsemester, and January 1 for the summer. Applications for finan-cial aid must be submitted at least two weeks before the relevantadmission deadline.

The graduate program will process the application only afterall forms and documents are received. An application is not com-plete until the following materials have been received:1. The Application for Admission, Fellowship, and Assistantship

2. Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiarwith your ability to do scholarly work. (Select three personswho are familiar with your academic abilities and potentialand request that each one complete one of the recommenda-tion forms on pages 9-14 of this booklet.)

finon¡i¡lAidApplicants who wish to be considered for fellowships andassistantships must check the appropriate places on the application form (page 5 of this booklet). Almost all fellowshipsand assistantships are awarded to students beginning studyduring the fall semester. The important deadline for fellow-ships and assistantships, thetefore, is February 1 for mostprograms of the University Graduate School. Students whowant to begin study at other times of the year must submitapplications for fellowships and assistantships at least twoweeks before the relevant admission deadline to be consideredfor the assistance.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance processes federalloans and graduate work-study awards for students admit-ted to graduate degree programs on the Bloomington cam-pus. The application priority date is March 1, with awardeligibility notifications mailed to graduate students in June.Applications for financial assistance received after March1 are processed and eligibility determined in late summer.Information and application forms may be obtained byprospective Bloomington campus students from the Officeof Student Financial Assistance, Franklin Hall 208, IndianaUniversity, Bloomington, IN 47405 (telephone: [812] 855-0321). Examination (GRE) General Test, which contains sêctionsthat measure verbal, quantitative, and analytical abilities, andit also offers 16 different subiect tests. Most degree programsof the University Graduate School require GRE scores. (The

requirements for each degree program are provided on pages

15-16 of this booklet.) Information and application materi-als for the GRE may be obtained by contacting GraduateRecord Examinations, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000 (telephone: [609] 771-7670).

Departments and University Graduate School offices on manycampuses also have information and forms for signing upfor the GRE. Examinations are given in October, December,

February, April, andJune at centers located throughout theUnited States and the world. Applicants who wish to meetthe February 1 deadline for consideration for fellowships andassistantships should plan to take the October examinationbecause scores from the December test may not arrive in timefor consideration before a program makes decisions. OnlyGRE scores submitted by the Educational Testing Service are

considered to be official.

TrrnscriptsApplicants must submit an official transcript from each col-lege and university attended. An official transcript bears theoriginal signature of the registrar and/or the original seal ofthe issuing institution. Transcripts should be mailed directlyby a registrar to the program to which the application is beingsent, or should be given to the applicant by the registrar in a

sealed and signed envelope and then submitted to the gradu-

ate program by the applicant along with the other applicationmaterials.
