# Item Description

1 AF-assist beam emitter Projects a red light beam to help the camera focus in darker settings.

2 Optic slave sensor Detects light from a camera’s built-in flash or other flash source to trigger the flash.

3 External power port Plug an external high-power battery pack or other external power supply into this socket to supplement the flash’s internal batteries. Can also be used instead of the internal batteries.

4 Power port cover Covers and protects the external power port.

5 Mounting foot Connect to the camera’s hot shoe to mount and connect the flash on the camera.

6 Built-in wide angle panel and white reflector card

Use the wide angle lens to spread the flash light over a wider angle or to reduce its direct intensity. Pull out the white reflector card with the flash head pointed up to create a more diffused light and a catchlight in a subjetc's eye for portrait shots. See “Creating a catchlight” on page 15.

7 Flash head Provides the light (flash) for the photograph.

8 Tripod mount socket Use with the flash in slave mode to mount the flash to a tripod or similar device.

9 PC sync terminal cover Covers the PC sync terminal.

10 PC sync terminal Connect a PC sync cord (not included) to this jack to control the flash remotely.

11 Locking knob Tighten this knob to secure the flash to the camera.

Setting up your flashInstalling the batteries

1 Open the battery compartment cover by pressing it with your thumb, sliding the compartment down, then lifting it open.

2 Insert four (4) AA batteries (not included), making sure to match the + and – symbols.

Cautions• Using AA batteries other than Alkaline or NiMH may

cause improper battery contact due to the irregular shape of the battery contacts.

• If you change the batteries after firing many flashes continuously, be aware that the batteries might be hot.

Notes• Replace all four at one time.• Make sure all four batteries are the same brand and type.• Batteries are not included with this flash.

3 Close the battery compartment cover and slide it into place.

Attaching and removing the flash1 Turn the camera and the flash off.2 With the flash facing toward the front of the camera, slide the flash’s mounting

foot all the way into the camera’s hot shoe.

3 Rotate the locking knob on the mounting foot until it’s tight. Do not overtighten.



4 Make sure that the camera and flash are turned off, then remove the flash from the camera by loosening the locking knob and sliding it off of the camera’s hot shoe.

Turning on the flash1 Slide the power switch to ON. The flash begins charging. The flash zoom

mechanism also resets. This generates some movement sounds and is normal.

2 When the flash-ready indicator turns red, the camera flash is fully charged and ready for firing.

Using Auto Power OffTo save battery power, if the flash is not used for 90 seconds the power turns off automatically when attached to a camera or mounted on its stand or a tripod. When the flash is in S1/S2 slave triggering mode, the flash enters sleep mode after 30 to 60 minutes (adjustable). To turn the flash on again, press the camera’s shutter button halfway, or press the flash’s TEST button.

Note

If the battery icon blinks on the LCD panel, the battery power is low and the flash stops charging. Change the batteries immediately.

Note

To test the flash, press the TEST button.

CautionDo not look closely at the flash window or point it at someone’s eyes at close range.

Caution

When the power switch is set to ON and the flash power has automatically turned off, power is still being consumed. Long-term power discharge damages batteries, so make sure to slide the power switch to OFF if the flash will not be used for an extended period.

Using your flashFully automatic flash shootingSetting the camera's shooting mode to P (Program AE) or AUTO (Full Auto) makes automatic shooting as easy as normal AE shooting.

1 Set the flash to i-TTL auto flash mode by pressing the MODE button repeatedly until “TTL” is displayed on the LCD panel.

2 To focus the camera, press the shutter button halfway. The shutter speed and aperture are displayed in the camera’s viewfinder. Make sure that the icon is shown in the camera’s viewfinder.

3 Make sure that the subject is within the effective range (indicated by the lighted bars on the flash range scale) displayed on the flash LCD panel.

Before the shot is recorded by the camera, the flash fires a pre-flash. This is immediately followed by the main flash.

Note

“TTL” is displayed on the LCD panel even if the camera is compatible with i-TTL.

Using i-TTL autoflash in the shooting modesSet the camera’s shooting mode to S (shutter-priority AE), A (aperture-priority AE), or M (manual) to use i-TTL autoflash.

* 1/X seconds is the camera’s maximum flash sync speed.

Mode Description

S Select this mode when you want to set the shutter speed manually.The camera automatically sets the aperture, matching the shutter speed, to obtain a standard exposure.

A Select this mode when you want to set the aperture manually.The camera automatically sets the shutter speed, matching the aperture, to obtain a standard exposure.If the background is dark (like a night scene), a slow sync speed is used to obtain a standard exposure of both the main subject and background.Standard exposure of the main subject is obtained with the flash, while a standard exposure of the background is obtained with a slow shutter speed.Note: Since a slow shutter speed is used for low-light scenes, use of a tripod is recommended.

M Select this mode if you want to set both the shutter speed and aperture manually.Standard exposure of the main subject is obtained with the flash. The exposure of the background is obtained with the shutter speed and aperture combination you set.

Using Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC)Using FEC, this flash can adjust from -3 to +3 in 1/3rd stops. This is useful in situations where minor adjustments of the TTL system are needed, based on the environment.

1 Set the flash to i-TTL auto flash mode by pressing the MODE button repeatedly until “TTL” is displayed on the flash LCD panel.

2 Press the SET button. The flash exposure compensation number blinks on the flash LCD panel.

3 Set the flash exposure compensation number by pressing the - or + button.4 Press the SET button again to confirm the setting. The flash exposure

compensation number stops blinking.5 To cancel flash exposure compensation, set the number to “+0.0”. The number

stops blinking on the LCD panel.

Notes• The flash exposure compensation amount can only be set

in TTL mode.• If the camera has also set the flash exposure

compensation amount, the final flash amount is determined by the common effects of the two amounts.

Using the Flash Value Lock (FV)The FV (flash value) lock locks the correct flash exposure setting into the flash for any part of the scene you select.

1 Set the flash to i-TTL auto flash mode by pressing the MODE button repeatedly until “TTL” is displayed on the flash LCD panel.

2 Focus on the subject.3 Place the selected subject in the center of the viewfinder, then press the FV

button on the camera. The camera flash fires a preflash and the required flash output for the subject is retained in memory.

Each time you press the FV button, a preflash is fired, a new flash exposure setting is locked into memory, and the FV lock icon is displayed in the camera’s viewfinder.

Notes• If the i-TTL mode is not selected, the FV lock cannot be

set.• If the subject is too small, FV lock might not be very

effective.• The FV button is on the camera. The FV button position

may vary based on different Nikon camera models. Please refer to the instruction manual of your Nikon camera model.

Using the High-speed SyncBy using the high-speed sync (FP flash), the flash can synchronize with all shutter speeds. This is convenient when you want to use aperture priority for fill-flash portraits. High Speed Sync is automatically enabled when:

• the flash is in TTL or M mode,• the camera is in A, S, P, or M mode, • and the camera's flash setting menu is set to "1/250S (Auto FP)" or "1/320S

(Auto FP)".1 Set the flash sync speed to 1/320s (Auto FP) or 1/250s (Auto FP) in the

camera's flash setting menu, then press the shutter button halfway. The high-speed sync icon is displayed on the flash LCD panel.

2 Turn the camera’s command dial to set the shutter speed to 1/250s or faster. To make sure that the FP flash function works properly, check the shutter speed in the camera’s viewfinder. If it shows a speed of 1/250s or faster, the FP flash function is enabled.

Notes• If you set the shutter speed to 1/320s (Auto FP) or 1/250s

(Auto FP) in the Nikon camera setting, is displayed in the flash LCD panel regardless of the actual shutter speed.

• With high-speed sync, the faster the shutter speed, the shorter the effective flash range.

• To return to normal flash, set the flash sync speed to something other than Auto FP. The icon disappears when you press the shutter halfway.

• Multi flash mode cannot be set in high-speed sync mode.• Over-temperature protection may be activated after 15

consecutive high-speed sync flashes.

Using bounce flashBy pointing the flash head toward a wall or ceiling, the flash bounces off of the surface before illuminating the subject. This can soften shadows behind the subject for a more natural-looking shot. This is called bounce flash.

• Hold the flash head and turn it to the angle you want.

Creating a catchlightWith the white reflector card you can create a catchlight (a light source that causes a specular highlight) in the subject’s eyes to add life to their facial expression.

1 Point the flash head upward 90°. 2 Pull out the wide angle panel on the front of the flash head. The white

reflector card comes out at the same time.

Notes• If the wall or ceiling is too far away, the bounced flash

might be too weak and may result in underexposure.• The wall or ceiling should be a plain, white color for high

reflectance. If the bounce surface is not white, the surface color may affect the picture.

3 Push the wide angle panel back in, leaving the white reflector card out.

4 Hold the flash head and turn it to the angle you want.

Using ZOOM to set the flash coverageThe flash coverage can be set, automatically or manually, to match the lens focal length from 24 mm to 105 mm. Also, with the built-in wide angle panel, the flash coverage can be expanded for 14 mm wide-angle lenses.

1 Set your camera to manual zoom. (manual zoom) appears on the flash LCD panel.

2 Press the ZOOM button until the Zoom value blinks on the LCD panel.

3 Press the - or + buttons to change the flash coverage. If manual zoom is not turned on, the flash coverage is set automatically.

Notes• The catchlight does not appear in the subject’s eyes if you

swing the flash head left or right.• For maximum catchlight effect, stay approximately 4.9 ft

(1.5 m) away from the subject.

Notes• If you set the flash coverage manually, make sure that it

covers the lens focal length so that the picture does not have a dark periphery.

• If you use a commercially-available PC sync cord to connect the camera to the flash’s PC sync terminal, set the flash zoom manually.

Using the wide angle panelUse the wide angle panel to spread light over a wider angle or to reduce its intensity.

1 Pull out the wide angle panel on the front of the flash head. The white reflector card comes out at the same time.

2 Push the white reflector card back in, leaving the wide angle panel out.3 Pivot the wide angle panel down over the flash head. The flash coverage is

extended to 14 mm.

Notes• If you use bounce flash with the wide angle panel in

place, the subject is illuminated by both the bounce flash and direct flash, which may look unnatural.

• Pull out the wide angle panel gently. Using excessive force may detach the wide angle panel from the flash head.

• The ZOOM button does not work with the wide angle panel in place.

Using manual flash (M)The flash output is adjustable from full power to 1/128th power in 1/3rd step increments. Use a hand-held flash meter to determine the required flash output to obtain a correct flash exposure when using manual flash.

1 Press the MODE button repeatedly until the M is displayed on the LCD panel.

2 Press the SET button to set the flash output. The flash output blinks on the LCD panel.

3 Press the - button to set a lower value, or the + button to set a higher value.4 Press the SET button again to lock the settings.5 Press the shutter button halfway to see the effective flash range displayed.

Using stroboscopic (multi) flashUsing stroboscopic flash, a rapid series of flashes is fired. This can be used to capture multiple images of a moving subject in a single photograph.You can set the firing frequency (number of flashes per second, expressed as Hz), the number of flashes, and the flash output.

1 Press the MODE button repeatedly until “Multi” is displayed on the flash LCD panel.

2 Press the SET button to select the first item. The flash repeat rate or frequency (the number of flashes per second) blinks on the LCD panel.

3 To set the multi-flash count (the number of flash actuations), press the - or + to select the number of flashes.

4 Press the SET button. The next item to be set (the flash power level) starts blinking.

5 To set the flash power level, press the - or + to select the power level.6 Press the SET button. You can select 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, or 1/128.

Calculating the shutter speedDuring stroboscopic flash, the shutter remains open until the firing stops. Use the formula below to calculate the shutter speed and set it with the camera.Number of flashes / Firing frequency = Shutter speedFor example, if the number of flashes is 10 and the firing frequency is 5 Hz, the shutter speed should be at least 2 seconds.

Caution

To avoid overheating and damaging the flash head, do not use stroboscopic flash more than 10 times in succession. After 10 times, allow the camera flash to rest for at least 15 minutes. If you try to use the stroboscopic flash mode more than 10 times in succession, the firing might stop automatically to protect the flash head. If this happens, allow the camera flash to rest for at least 15 minutes.

reflective subject against a dark background.• Use of a tripod, a remote switch, and an external power

Using second-curtain sync With second-curtain sync, using a slow shutter speed, you can create a light train following the subject, in which the flash fires right before the shutter closes.

• Set the camera to Rear mode and press the shutter button halfway. The flash LCD panel shows the second curtain sync icon .

Using S1/S2 slave triggering modeThis flash unit supports slave triggering mode. To enter S1/S2 mode from the main mode, press and hold the button until S1 displays. If you are in S1 mode, press the button to enter S2 mode. If you are in S2 mode, press the button to return to master mode. S2 disappears from the LCD panel.The flash output setting in slave triggering mode is the same as that in manual mode. After pressing the SET button, the flash output blinks. Press the - button or + button to set a value.You can use your mini stand to set the flash away from the camera in S1 or S2 slave trigger mode.

1 Slide the flash hot shoe onto the mini stand.2 Rotate the locking knob on the mounting foot until it’s tight. Do not

overtighten.3 Place the flash in the location you want.

S1 slave triggering modeIn this mode, the flash unit functions as a slave flash for creating multiple lighting effects. It should be used in manual flash mode. In S1 mode, the flash unit fires at the same time as the master flash.

Notes• Second-curtain sync works well in the camera's "bulb"

mode.• With i-TTL, two flashes are fired even at slow shutter

speeds. The first flash is only the preflash, not a malfunction.

• Stroboscopic flash cannot be set.

S2 slave triggering modeThis mode is also called “Preflash Cancel.” In this mode, the flash unit ignores a single “preflash” from the master flash and only fires in response to the second, actual flash from the master. Therefore, this mode can be used when using a TTL master flash on the camera.

Setting custom functions (C.Fn)The following table lists the custom functions of this flash.

1 To access the Custom Functions Menu on the flash, press the button for two seconds or longer until Fn is displayed on the LCD panel.

2 Press the - or + button to select the custom function number you want.3 Press the SET button. When the setting blinks, press the - or + button to select

Over-Temperature Protection• To avoid overheating and damaging the flash head, allow the camera to rest

after 20 continuous flashes.• If you fire too many flashes, the inner over-temperature protection function

may be activated and make the recycling time about 10 to 15 seconds. If this occurs, allow a rest time of about 10 minutes, and the flash unit returns to normal.

Error codesThe flash has a built-in protection mechanism in case of a failure. These are shown on the display according to the following error codes:

E1 A failure occured in the recharging system and the flash cannot fire.Turn the flash power switch OFF, then ON again. If the problem persists, it will require service.

E2 The system is too hot. Allow a rest time of 10 minutes.

Problem Solution

The flash does not charge

• Make sure that the batteries are installed in the correct direction.• If appears and blinks on the LCD panel, replace the batteries immediately.• Install the batteries even when using an external power source.

The flash does not fire • Make sure that the flash's mounting foot is securely connected to the camera's hot shoe.• Wait until the flash is fully charged and the flash ready indicator lights red.• Make sure that the electrical contacts on the mounting foot and hot shoe are clean.• If the flash is in slave mode and not mounted on the camera, make sure that the camera's

flash is on and active.• If the flash ready indicator does not light, replace the batteries.• If appears and blinks on the LCD panel, replace the batteries immediately.

The power turns off by itself

• When the flash is set as the master unit, the flash enters sleep mode after 90 seconds of inactivity. Press the shutter button halfway or press the TEST button to wake it up.

• When the flash is set as the slave unit, the flash enters sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity. Press the TEST button to wake it up.

Auto zoom does not work

• Make sure that the flash is not set to manual zoom mode.• Make sure that the flash's mounting foot is securely connected to the camera's hot shoe.• If appears and blinks on the LCD panel, replace the batteries immediately.

The picture is underexposed or overexposed

• If there is a highly reflective object (such as glass or a mirror) in the picture, use the FE lock.• If you are using the high-speed sync, make sure that the subject is within the effective

flash range displayed.• If you are using Manual Flash mode, set the flash to TTL or modify the flash output. Be sure

the flash exposure compensation is set to zero.

Photos have dark corners or only parts of the target subject are illuminated

• Check the flash coverage you set. This flash unit has flash coverage between 24 and 105 mm (lens focal length), which fits medium-format cameras. Pull the wide panel out to extend the flash coverage.
