Saul would be the first king. Saul was not looking to be king, but from all reports, Saul looked like a king; head and shoulders above all others. When Samuel met Saul, it was “… that God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day” (I Samuel 10:9). Saul truly wanted to do the will of God and become what God had planned for a king to be, a source of guidance and godliness for the people of Israel. But Saul departed from God, due to an offense to God disguised as an act of devotion (I Sam 13&15). Saul was to wait for Samuel to offer a sacrifice to God and Saul did not wait. He was to destroy a nation that threatened Israel, and take nothing, Saul destroyed the nation and brought back the spoils of war. Saul was self reliant, a most detestable attribute of any man, but especially of a leader. Saul did in essence what he knew God wanted, but not in expectation of what was wanted. Saul was not a man after the heart of God. It would be David who would be anointed as king to succeed Saul, but the manner in which God would have Samuel choose David is most unique and most telling. It’s in the selection of David as king that God would teach us one of the greatest lessons, that we are not to judge based upon appearance or the outward man, but we serve a God who does not see as man sees. When man looks at the image of a person, God looks to their inner man, the heart and He sees everything (I Samuel 16:7). David was chiefly concerned in delighting the heart of God. Yet you and I both know David was by no means a flawless man. He was not allowed to build the temple for the Lord, because there was too much blood on his hands (I Chronicles 28:3). David defiled a wife, deceived a husband, and destroyed a family. David was a wreck of a human being (Psalm 51), and the Holy Spirit said, when God needed a leader, He raised up David, “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). What made the difference between these two kings? When we compare the lives of Saul and David, especially the sins of Saul and David, and we just lay them down side by side, we’re struck at what seems to be such a distinction between their actions, but such a difference in God’s dealing with each of these men. Saul offered a sacrifice when he shouldn’t have, and brought back some goats that were not his to keep…David ruined his life and the lives of so many others? How was he the man after God’s heart? “For godly sorrow works repentance, leading to salvation” (II Corinthians 7:10). You see Saul and David as two kings, not only opposite in their heart but in their humility. It was Saul’s arrogance that drove him away from God; but it was David’s anguish over his sin that drove him to beg, “Create in me a clean heart oh God and renew a bright spirit within in me. Cast me not from your presence, nor take your holy spirit from me” (Psalm 51). Can God raise up a leader in your heart and your home? Can He raise up a leader in your marriage and in your parenting? Can he raise up a leader in your workplace and community? Can He raise up a leader in your heart? I hope you know…He can… and He did, two thousand years ago, He raised up the leader for every heart, and crowned Him with glory and honor when He was seated at the right hand of the majesty on high. Jesus Christ is the leader we need for every heart.

“I Hope You Know”

I Surrender All

There came a time during the days of Samuel that the nation of Israel sent up a collective cry, give “us a king to judge us like all the nations” (I Samuel 8:6). Saul would be the first king. Saul was not looking to be king, but from all reports, Saul looked like a king; head and shoulders above all others. When Samuel met Saul, it was “…that God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to

pass that day” (I Samuel 10:9). FALL BREAK! I hope that whatever you find

yourself doing, you are enjoying your break from school and are being reenergized! Once

Fall Break is over, we have a packed calendar for October. From Firesides, Bible Studies and

Lighthouses to Timothy & Tabitha Classes, A

Sparks & Intermediates Trip, Trunk or Treat, and a huge 5th Quarter Hayride & Cajun Boil

to end the month. Be sure you are involved in everything you can, especially and most

importantly our times of worship. Invite your friends to join us for it all!

A SERVANT PROJECT ADDITION TO

THE CALENDAR… This Thursday we will be cleaning out the Hope House and some other

areas for our servant project. We have a possible opportunity for our Hope House to be

used in a community outreach, and we want

to get it ready as well as some other areas that need some attention. This is not on the

calendar, but an added event. We will start at 10:00 and end up around 1:00 or 2:00. Be

sure to bring some money for lunch and wear some clothes to get dirty in.

I WAS BLESSED TO SPEND A FEW

DAYS last week at the Ministering 2 Youth Conference in Chattanooga. I was with

several youth ministers from across the country and heard some dynamic lessons from

David Shannon, Keith Parker, Chuck Morris,

Philip Jenkins, Lonnie Jones, and JD Schwartz, just to name a few. The theme for the time

together was from Luke 10 and the challenge that is laid before us. As Jesus sent out these

disciples, he charged them with several things

to be prepared for. Jesus told them, the harvest is great and the laborers are few, so

pray for more laborers. He warned them they are being sent out among wolves. Jesus told

them not to worry about anything along the way, God will provide. He also told them

some will not receive the gospel, but continue

to proclaim it! Our tasks have not changed, the harvest is still plentiful and it is not easy.

There are frustrations, challenges, and “me” attitudes to contend with, but the task does

not change. May we never grow weary in

doing good, Galatians 6:9. Let us continue busy spreading God’s word and continue to

always seek no other way but to… follow His path, -Craig
