I set out on a narrow wayMany years ago

Hoping I would find true love

Along the broken roadBut I got lost a time or twoI wiped my brow and kept

pushin' throughI couldn't see how ev'ry

signPointed straight to you

And every long lost dreamLed me to where you are

Others who broke my heartThey were just northern

starsPointing me on my way

Into your lovin' armsThis much I know is true

That God blessed the broken road

that led me straight to you

I think about the years I spentJust passin' throughI'd like to take the time I lostAnd give it back to youBut you just smile and take my handYou've been there you understandIt's all part of this grander planThat is coming true

And every long lost dreamLed me to where you are

Others who broke my heartThey were just northern stars

Pointing me on my wayInto your lovin' arms

This much I know I know is true

That God blessed the broken road

And led me straight to you

Oh straight to youHey yeah oh

Oh oh now I'm just runnin' homeInto your lovin' arms

This much I knowI know is true

That God blessed the broken road

And led me straight to youYes God blessed the broken road

And led me straight to youOh straight to you

Readings From Holy Scripture

Psalm 127

P The Old Testament Reading is from the book of Psalms, the 127th chapter.

Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.2 It is in vain that you rise up earlyand go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil;for he gives to his beloved sleep.

Psalm 1273 Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD,

the fruit of the womb a reward.4 Like arrows in the hand of a warriorare the children of one's youth.5 Blessed is the manwho fills his quiver with them!He shall not be put to shamewhen he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

P This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

1 Corinthians 11:2-12

P The Epistle is from 1 Corinthians, the eleventh chapter

“Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.

1 Corinthians 11:2-12

Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every wife who prays or phophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head-it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of god, but woman is the glory of man.

1 Corinthians 11:2-12

For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord the woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as a woman was made from man, so man is now born of a woman. And all things are from God.

P This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

and whoever would be first among you must be your slave. Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Sermon

Office of HusbandRecap

•God is present in the office of the husband in order that he bless his wife

•This is a role of sacrificing his own wants/needs/desires

•God’s idea of authority is different from the worlds – In God’s kingdom, authorities are to serve, not lord – Give not take

•The husband is responsible for the spiritual care of his wife and children – in prayer, worship and seeing her as Christ sees her – in splendor, without spot or blemish.

Headship1 Corinthians 11:3•Does not denote inequality•In the Trinity, the Son is = the Father•But, there is a relationship of 1. authority & obedience 2. giving and receiving 3. loving and receiving love

HeadshipThe Son obeys the Father•He is not weakened by obedience•He is no less God because of it•He is not inferior in His divinity•There is no shame or injustice

The Son submits because He is Son to the Father

HeadshipJesus is the example for us.

•His headship is a gift to the church

•Thus the husbands headship also must be a gift to his wife.

Headship is an organic analogy used by God.

•The head only lives as long as it is connected to the body•The body only lives as long as it is connected to the head

•Again…the union of one flesh

•Thus there is no “her problem” or “his problem”• In marriage there is only “our problem”

ROMANS 13:1COLOSSIANS 2:9-10

JOHN 5:19ROMANS 15:1-3

•Authority is never given for the sake of selfishness but for service to others

Christ’s headship encompasses providing and nourishing (Eph. 5:23-29) & equipping the body (Eph. 4:15-16)

Authority is to build others up (2 Cor. 10:8)

The headship of a husband gives him authority, true…but this is not about control and is not an excuse to

demean.

Publicly the husband ought to speak positively and protectively towards their wife.

The head & body are not at odds with one another

“He who loves his wife loves himself”Selfless love reflects back upon the self

“No one ever hated his own flesh”Ultimately people do not hate themselves – maybe their

looks or what they’ve become has hindered their happiness.

Scripture ties our flesh with our very being – so now in marriage, the two selves become one self.

The Great ExchangeGod uses husbands to point to His own relationship with His people – whether they are “good” or not. The husband has still been given the office and cannot diminish the one who is present in it.

God works through the office here on earth. All good works thus belong to Him.

Christ’s sacrifice overflows our shortcomings and empowers our sacrifices.

A husband’s love is to be Christlike.

Even his wife’s problems and weaknesses provide opportunities to express love by

sharing her burdens.Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill

the law of Christ.”

Husbands must recognize their wife as a vessel carrying the Holy Spirit, a gift

personally given by God Himself.

Sometimes confessing your sins is the most powerful sacrifice that can be made for your spouse and

marriage. Sometimes forgiving your spouse’s confession is your sacrifice instead.

Marriage is to be an icon of the gospel.

Collect of the Day

L Almighty God, look with favor upon the husbands in our congregation in their vocation as husband. Given them wisdom, courage, and patience to serve in sacrificial love, and strengthen them in this calling; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

OfferingIV. GOD’S STEWARDS ARE UNIQUELY

SINGULAR, YET PROFOUNDLY PLURAL.

This means that God’s stewards recognize that their lives are not solo performances but are personal responses to God, lived out within the community of faith to benefit the whole world.

V. GOD’S STEWARDS ARE IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF THE WORLD.

This means that God’s stewards recognize that the Lord sets them apart from the world and by the transforming power of the Gospel sends them into the world to live out the Gospel. VI. GOD’S STEWARDS ARE LOVED AND LOVING. This means that God’s stewards recognize that their stewardship flows out of God’s act of love for them in Christ which empowers them, in turn, to love others in acts of Christ-like love.

Stand

CollectAlmighty and gracious God, in every age You have inspired men to labor, with hearts united, in Your kingdom. Continue to grant to the men of this congregation faithfulness in serving You and upholding the truth of Your Word that they, together with us all, may respond to Your redeeming love in Christ Jesus by devoting themselves to seeking and doing Your holy will and following in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

AMEN.

Lord's PrayerC Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in

heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we

forgive those who trespass against us;

power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
