Welcome
Welcome to the latest
update about the work
being done by
Regional Development
Australia in the South

Government tasks
RDAs to report on
activities in relation to
the RDA Charter and
agreed working
agenda which is
endorsed both by local
representatives and by
the Commonwealth.

Led by Chairman,
Duncan Anderson, the
RDA Board comprises:

BBRF successes hit $20m mark
The South West enjoyed more success
with the Building Better Regions Fund,
adding another $8.6m funding to the
account.
Capecare’s Dunsborough Village has been
awarded $7.1m in Federal funding from round
3 of BBRF.
The project will include 21 independent living
apartments as well as an 80-bed residential
care facility that will provide dementia and
palliative care for people in the region.
The Village will also provide other
infrastructure including a community centre,
Country Women’s Association facilities,
wellness services and lifestyle/social
activities.
Capecare CEO Stephen Carmody has been
working on the project for some time and
engaged RDASW to run a REMPLAN
economic analysis of the project.
The Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup also
engaged RDA economic modelling capacity
to make the case for upgrading the Apple Fun
Park.
WA’s best free fun park was awarded $1.5m
to upgrade and renovate the park, making the
tourist attraction even bigger and better. The
allocation was part of the Commonwealth’s
$70m tourism investment this round.
Overall, the South West has secured $20.4m
in Infrastructure Stream funding for a total
project value of $66.8m. Projects have been
spread over a dozen projects.
The smaller scale Community Stream saw
success for the Nature Conservation
Margaret River Region Inc which plans to
deliver leadership workshops and develop
action plans.
Regional Community Stream investment is
almost $86,000 funding for six projects.

Most people don’t know that Australian
produced timber has accreditation for
environmental sustainability.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and
Programme for the Endorsement of Forest
Certification (PEFC) cover most operations
and meet Australian Standards.
PEFC operates under the Responsible Wood
scheme and includes a full chain of custody
from forest to outlet.
The next time you buy wood for a job around
the home, buy Australian as it will be compliant
with sustainable practices and responsible
forestry management.
The South West is among a
handful of pilot forestry hubs
planned to boost the industry.
The Commonwealth has
announced plans to boost the
forestry industry by launching
nine regional forestry hubs
across the country. Pilot hubs will
be established in the initial
phases.
Four pilot hubs will be set up in
Dardanup in Western Australia
plus Tasmania, NSW, and across
the South Australia and Victoria
border.
Another five hubs will be brought
… AND ACTION
Visit stuns Chinese moviemakers
RDASW partnered with a
host of interests to
showcase the South West
to a party of influential
Chinese filmmakers and
investors.
Leading Chinese film
industry players visited
Perth and Fremantle before
seeing the best of potential
locations across the South
West.
Locations included
Bunbury, Busselton,
Margaret River and a bevvy
of hotspots from caves to
beaches and wineries to
the forests.
Legend Media Group
organised the event with
the local support of
businesses, the South
West Development
Commission, Creative
Corner and RDASW.
A ‘Creative Forum’ exposed
the delegation to members
of the region’s creative
industries sector looking to
be involved with projects
that are in the pipeline.
Following the visit,
delegates undertook
location recces in Broome,
Karajini and mining towns.
ACCC priorities
In addition to an ongoing
focus on ensuring small
businesses protection under
the Competition and
Consumer Act, ACCC
priorities for 2019 include a
watch on franchising,
removing unfair contract
terms, and anti-competitive
conduct in commercial
construction markets.
on line in 2020 following the
initial $12.5m investment.
Demand for sustainable timber
is expected to quadruple by
2050 and the aim is to grow a
billion more trees by 2030.
That target translates to an
additional 400,000ha of new
forests which translate to about
18 million tonnes of carbon
storage.

Safer Communities
Fund success
The Federal Government
will provide the City of
Busselton with $300,000
for its Community Safety
Project.
Grant funds became
available from Round 3 of
the Commonwealth's
$30m Safer Communities
Fund.
The money will be used to
increase surveillance
throughout the region
including the Busselton
Foreshore, and in
Dunsborough the
Naturaliste Community
Centre and the John
Edwards Pavilion.
The City of Busselton
notes that funding will help
extend surveillance
capacity at these key
locations which have
experienced repeated
incidents of vandalism and
anti-social behaviour
which has disappointed
residents and proved
costly.
As well as local factors, a
stated aim of the project is
to ensure that visiting
families feel safe and
experience the great
community facilities that
City of Busselton residents
enjoy year round.
You have a lot of brains
apparently – not just the
one according to Dr Jared
Horvath – and the knack is
knowing how to get the best
out of them.
As part of a leadership boost
and linking in with the Creative
Corner’s Emergence Projects
week, Dr Horvath was
engaged to deliver two
presentations on what makes
your brain tick and how you
can exploit natural inclinations
to show regional leadership by
influencing others.
All our collective little brains
are competing for your
attention and want to dominate
your ‘coder’, aka the control
centre in your frontal lobe
which decides what is
important and takes priority. All
that clever stuff simply means
that when you are trying to
influence, you need to know
what’s going on in everyone’s
head so that you can corner the
market on someone’s attention
and therefore lead them down
the path of your choice without
having your message diluted by
other distractions.
Dr Horvath’s top tips are:
■ You are the crux of
information and since people
have one focus – it needs to be
on you
■ Audiences have a 15-minute
attention span
■ Present information in blocks
■ Keep it simple
■ Engage your target with
questions to get them thinking
■ Don’t mix written words with
spoken
Special guest Dr Jared Horvath with RDASW Director of Regional Development, Charles Jenkinson and SWDC
A/Assistant Director Industry & Business, Mat Lewis who combined to pull the event together.

Regional centres
are key
Questions of equity
regularly feature in
economic development
debate but the reality is
that every small town
doesn’t get metro level
facilities. However, the
key is to boost regional
centres and like ripples
from a pebble thrown in
a pond, the benefits will
flow to all the smaller
towns. For the South
West, Bunbury and
Busselton are the
population centres
attracting services.

support public and private
sector projects.
Anyone who wants to fully
understand their community,
run impact scenarios should
contact the RDA office on
