Sub: Grouping Guidelines for Grant .ofLicenceI Inclusion of New varieties asper IS15683:2006.

IS 15683:2006 lays down requirements for performance, reliability andsafety of portable fire extinguishers of all types specified in this standard.Extinguishers shall be classified by the type of extinguishing mediumwhich they contain. At present, the main types of extinguishers are: -a) Water or/and Foam based, b) Powder, c) Carbon dioxide, andd) Cle~m agents. ",

Fires are classified as Class A, Class B, Class C & Class D.,

These types of extinguishers may be further sub-divided, for example, water-based extinguishers may contain pure water or water with additives

such as wetti~g agents, viscosity-increasing agents, flame-retardant, orfoaming ~gents, etc. Powders may be of 'BC' or 'ABC' types, or may bespecially prepared for Class D (metals) fires. Clean agents which arehalon substitutes that is HFC, HCFC blends etc (Halotron, NAF PV, HFC-36), Fluoro ketone. '

Carbon dioxide used in extinguishers shall comply with IS 15222.Clean agents used in extinguishers shall comply with IS 15493 or

standard of clean agent supplied by manufacturer (To be confirmed. for test methods). .'Powder for Class BC should comply with IS 4308, for Class ABC IS14g09 and powders for use on Class D fires shall comply with IS4861. -, '

Foam concentrates used in extinguishers shall comply with IS 4989or ISO 7203..

The grouping guidelines for Grant of Licence / Inclusion of New Varietiesfor Portable Fire Extinguishers - Performance and Construction as per IS15683: 2006 for covering entire sizes is as under:

1. For a particular type of Extinguisher, one sample of minimum &maximum capacities shall be drawn to toyer all sizes, and tested for

of IS 15683:2006 shall be carried out in a BISrecognized laboratory for

all capacities individually, based on Extinguishing medi~, Propellants,Fillingrequirements, General operating performance requirements and

Rating suitability for the various Classes of Fire as declared by themanufacturer.
