President’s Report

By Alex KnoxArizona Flying Farmer

The 72nd International FlyingFarmers Convention inBloomington, MN is over and inthe history books. By allaccounts those in attendancehad a good time. If you havenot heard by now, theconvention I had planned wentoff without me thanks to thetremendous and gracious effortsof Past President Zelda Lewis,Office Manager Pat Amdor andthe rest of your executive officersand other volunteers. Thank youone and all.

I was taking a little time off andhaving a leisurely drive toBloomington with a carload ofIFF gear and was about 80%there when on July 27th mybrother, Lyle Knox, called me toinform me that our father,Norman Knox, had a stroke andwas in the hospital. At this point,we knew he wasn’t on his deathbed, but didn’t know the extentof damage to him. Lyle and Italked and agreed I needed tocome home to help with thefamily and business and helpcare for our mother, BarbaraKnox, who is suffering aneurological disorder. I turnedaround and drove about 24hours in a 33 hour stretch. I am

glad some of your states have80 MPH posted speed limits. While I fly an airplane at over500 MPH, the fence posts onsome sections of the highwaysure looked like a 500 MPH blur.No admission of guilt here. While Dad is stable and holdinghis own these days at home, he’sunable to drive. Mom continuesto have her own set of issuesand we have someone comingin daily to help – which now hasexpanded to help Dad as well.Lyle and I appreciate the callsand cards to us and our folks. We still have a lot to do andchallenges ahead in their day today care as some of you mayattest in your own lives.

Focusing back to IFF - thank youfor your trust in electing me inabsentia as your new president.I started my IFF officer careerthat way and looks like it willend the same way. I honestlytold Wayne Wilderman if IFFwanted the best president, notjust the next one, to re-electZelda. He did not take myadvice. Working with Zelda andthe rest of your IFF executive andthe board of directors has beenan honor. Zelda in particular hasa unique perspective that no oneelse can hold. Growing up in IFFand participating as a Teenofficer and then becoming IFF

Royalty and finishing her IFFofficer commitment this comingyear has been a learningexperience for me. She has givenso much to this organization inso many ways I just wanted topersonally thank her, andcollectively from all of us.

Another personal thank youneeds to go to our wonderfulOffice Manager Pat Amdor. IFFwould stop. Period. This lady isthe heart of this organizationthat keeps all the parts flowing.Sometimes those parts need astint, or in my case, a swift kickin the keister, to keep us movingin the right direction. Betweenkeeping our finances in order, meetings organized andtraditions upheld, she is the one.

IFF has combined the positionsof Secretary and Treasurer, sothank you to Harry Bartel fortaking on this dual role thisyear. This puts the executiveboard down a position and willkeep us a little more busy thanexpected but your officers willdo what we can to meet yourexpectations to your chaptersand its members.

Thank you to Vice PresidentClement Dion. He is still with uson the board after dealing with

Also held that day was a seminarby Kevin Morris of the FAA. Hisseminar discussed the newapproach to medicals for generalaviation pilots. I understand itwas very good and helpful.

For Wednesday evening’s din-ner, we were seated by chapterswith some tables having severalchapters. Following the meal, wewere entertained by ChancellorsQuartet.

Thursday morning Robert Koch, assistant professor andextension entomologist of theUniversity of Minnesota, presented his approach to the

use of drones and otherapproaches to control pests insoybeans. That presentation wasalso innovative, interesting andhelpful.

The luncheon Thursdayhonored our Man of the Year,Phil Peterson and Woman of theYear, Barbara Leis. were brave enough to be a littlewindblown on the top leveloutside and others stayed warmon the inside and visited.

The cruise was followed by atour of the US Bank Stadium. This is a brand new stadium forthe Mighty Minnesota Vikings(and also used for many otherevents). The facility was quiteimpressive, including things like32 miles of pipe for beer and ofcourse expensive suites for VIPsor people with lots of money. We were up high, down low (onthe field) and even toured thelocker room. The stadium seats66,000 people and will swell to72,000 for the Olympics, whichwill be held there soon.

We ended the evening with anice cream social sponsored byMarilyn and Harry Bartel.

Friday started with continuing thebusiness meeting, followed bythe installation of officers. Newofficers are Past President ZeldaLewis, President Alex Knox, VicePresident Clément Dion andSecretary/Treasurer HarryBartel.

Chair, Mary Hawthorne opened the committee meeting by asking if there were any issues with theFlyer. Harry sends 319 flyers by email. After sending the last Flyer, 79 of them were bounced backto him due to wrong email addresses.

Mary’s next question to the committee was should we combine the magazine and the Flyer to savetime and money? There are 337 family units that have email addresses listed with the IFF office, 49households do not have email addresses.

Magazine information:Average cost of printing one issue of the magazine is $991Average cost for editing one issue of the magazine is $610Average cost for mailing one issue of the magazine is $282.13

(300 copies on permit in U.S. for $121.81 53 copies first class to Canada for $160.31)

Editing one issue takes 40 to 65 hours depending on how much needs to be retyped and howmany photos have to be sorted through

Information about the cost of printing the magazine – number of pages determines the cost (themore pages, the higher the cost although it usually isn’t a great amount)

Colene Sager asked if we could cut out anything that is in the magazine. After some discussion itwas determined that most things should stay to keep the older members who are unable to attendactivities informed.

If we were to reduce the number of issues, we would have to apply for a new periodical permit andhave more pages per issue. It might not be very cost effective to do this.

There are basically no advertisements in the magazine other than the Christmas Greeting ads fromthe officers, royalty and region directors. Therefore the magazine does not generate much revenue.

Harry Bartel made a motion to keep the number of issues at 6 per year. Marilyn Arneson secondedthe motion. Motion carried.

The question was raised about in house printing as opposed to using an outside printer. It wasdetermined that it would not be possible to do in house printing of the magazine with the qualitythat is produced by an outside printer. When Pat Amdor took over the magazine, there were 3people involved in checking with various printers and they chose the least expensive one. Thecurrent printer gives us a few “freebies” such as color photos on the cover.

Any monetary loss caused by printing and mailing the magazine is the value we place on our oldermembers who cannot attend. It is worth every penny to keep them informed and make them feellike they are still part of the group.

Chairman Phil Peterson read the notes from last year’s committee meeting in Springfield, Illinois. These included Bob Carmean’s and Dave Tranberg’s suggested tour to Norway, Bill Pratt’s flying tourafter the upcoming Saskatoon Convention, Burl Scherler’s suggested tour of Southwest Four Corners,Alex Knox’s possible Hawaiian cruise and Jim Meyer’s possible Cuban trip.

1. Jeff Thompson offered to handle the Norwegian Cruise Tour and has researched it. It leavesSouth Hampton, England in August 2018 and is an eleven day trip of the fiords in Norway. JoanGillis shared a concern that Canadians would have trouble booking the trip as it could not be donethrough a travel agent. Burl Scherler reported that all could easily book the trip but that it must bedone directly with Celebrity Cruise Lines. All agreed that Celebrity Cruise Lines was an outstandingway to travel.

2. Clement Dion reported that Bill Pratt was still going forward with the post flying trip after theSaskatoon Convention with the first stopover at Yellowknife.

3. The Hawaiian Cruise has currently been dropped in favor of the Caribbean Cruise that JoelWharton is overseeing. Right now 40-45 Flying Farmers are signed up. There was a price increaseon July 10. All the rooms assigned to Flying Farmers have been taken. Others can still go and theHoliday Inn will let people keep their cars at the hotel for no charge. 4. There was a discussion about a trip to Cuba as suggested by Jim Meyer last year. Burl Scherlerreported that Canadians could sign up but U. S. Citizens were at risk according to Rick of CaribbeanTours due to relations between the countries and it would be better to wait a year or two before theFlying Farmers would attempt such a trip on their own. Anyone is welcome to go there on a cruiseship. No action was taken to pursue a trip at this time.

5. Burl Scherler told us about a southwest trip to Four Corners where landing is at MonumentValley, AZ with a nice family hotel and Jeep tours. The best time would be the first week of Octoberdue to weather and would include some color. A motion to have Burl to look further into trip plansfor the fall of 2018 or 2019 that might include the Balloon Festival in New Mexico was moved by JeffThompson and seconded by Carol Peterson was passed with all ayes.

6. Chairman Phil Peterson asked for interest in any new tours or suggested tours. Clement Dionrestated that he would be glad to lead a group on a farm tour of France and to be our interpreter andguide. He stated that the countryside is amazing and such a tour would be up to about ten days. BurlScherler moved to proceed with the tour and it was seconded by Jeff Thompson.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:54 p.m.

Afterwards Burl and Cathy Scherler gave a very interesting talk about the group with six airplanesthat flew on the Panama trip.

Ontario July Fly-In

Special Feature

By Ron LewisOntario Flying Farmer

On Saturday July 8th OFFmembers Wayne & Lana Millson, along with sons James & Joshhosted our monthly gathering attheir home strip near Port Hope.Eleven aircraft from areas ofWelland, Kincardine, North Bayand points between made theirway to CMF4. This gem is tuckedaway in a little explored area ofOntario by our group. Severalothers traveled by car for whatwould be a very informative andinteresting afternoon.

Landing on this well maintainedgrass strip we tied down nearwhat is the operations centre foran RC (radio controlled) club. Not just any RC club for this oneflies only electric powered planesof many types, some of largescale, but that is a story foranother time. We were given aride up to the slightly raisedhouse area and dropped at theattached hanger. From road sidethis may look like your typicalthree bay garage, but on theairstrip side a full width hydraulicpowered door opens. TheMillson’s RV10 had given up itsplace for the day to sit in thefarm’s maintenance shop so wecould use the space. The earlierarrivals could sit with a coffee

and look down to watchincoming traffic.

After greeting everyone Wayneasked the blessing before weenjoyed our potluck lunch. Hethen gave us a brief overview ofthe farming done by his father, brother and himself onindividually owned and somerented lands. They cash cropseveral hundred acres of corn, soybeans and buckwheat. Withthe bad weather this year quitea bit could not be planted ontime and remains that way. Hetold of how they designed andbuilt the hangar door and amuch larger eleven foot high onefor the shop on the farm to holddown costs. Later the door andhydraulic system would beinspected by several.

We were then introduced toJames and the world of electric

RC planes. Many of us have seenRC planes from time to time butthe world of internationalprecision flying is nothing likemost of us had ever known. Firstof all who knew that there is arequired licence for this type ofinternational competitive flying?James is the youngest personever to have been given thislicence. He had his firstopportunity to represent Canadain Poland at the age of eight.Scattered around were anumber of outdoor planes butthe one we were amazed by wasone used for indoor competition.

We were startled to find out thatthis plane, made of carbon fibre, and having counter rotatingprops weighs less than 2ounces. Specialized batteriesgive it about six minutes of airtime. Now you know why theyfly indoors to avoid drafts.Competitive routines are laid outby the organization and judgedfor precision much like divingetc.

Mistakes cost points and routinemanoeuvres unfinished in timedo not count. As Wayne pointedout, we climb into our cockpitsand fly merrily along without alot of thought in makingdirectional adjustments. Now try

James Millson with his indoor plane

Pasta had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti.Curry was a surname.Takeout was a dating situation... hopefully.Pizza? Sounds like a leaning tower somewhere.Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time. All chips were plain.Rice was a milk pudding, and never, ever part of main course.A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining.Brown bread was something only poor people ate.Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking.Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green.Cubed sugar was regarded as pretty fancy.Chickens didn’t have fingers in those days.None of us had ever heard of yogurt.Healthy food consisted of anything edible.Cooking outside was called camping.Seaweed was not a recognized food.‘Kebab’ was not even a word, never mind a food.Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, andwas regarded as being white gold.Prunes were medicinal.Surprisingly muesili was readily available. It was called cattle feed.Pineapples came in chunks in a can; we had only ever seen apicture of a real one.Water came out of the tap. Remembering My Dad - Guy A. Ham

Special Feature

by Diana HamVermont Flying Farmer

I can remember reading severalwonderful, powerful, so-called“prairie stories”. One started outwith a quote, “The way the twigis bent so shall the tree grow.”My aviator dad, Guy AndrewsHam Jr. wrote a marvelousmemoir (copy written) called“Learning the Hard Way”. Itstarts with his “twig bending”incident - and I quote:

”It all began on May 21, 1927,the day that Charles A. Lindbergelectrified the world by flyingalone, non-stop from New Yorkto Paris - an unheard ofaccomplishment.

A senior in MiltonMassachusetts High School atthe time, I was walking up anddown the aisles of the MiltonPublic Library, searching for asubject on which to write athesis. This was therequirement for passing English, for if I failed it I would not beincluded in the graduating class. Before I had found a suitablesubject, the quiet of the librarywas shattered by an arriving

mail carrier who shouted at thetop of his lungs, “Lindberg madeit! He just landed in Paris!” Fromthat moment on, there was nodoubt about the subject for mythesis: Aviation!”

”As soon as the shouting, whistling and clapping had dieddown, I went to the propersection and found what Iwanted. The rest of the day wasspent right there in the library, devouring everything dealingwith the subject. I left only whenthe library was closing, my armsloaded with aviation books andmagazines. From one of thelatter, I was able to get thenames and addresses of threenationally advertised flyingschools, all located in themiddle-west....” My first choicewas Sweeney School, probablybecause of its three-coloredbrochure. The cover depicted ahandsome aviator, clad inleather flying jacket, jodhpursand shiny boots and topped withleather helmet, goggles and theinevitable white silk scarf. Hewas pictured strolling along with

a buxom blond on one arm anda curvaceous brunette on theother. Dollar bills were flutteringun-noticed from his jacketpockets. Pretty heady stuff for a17-year-old! The caption on thecover read: “POPULARITY—BIGPAY—ADVENTURE—GET INTOAVIATION!”

Among my dad’s many daringexploits as a pioneer pilot washis successful participation in theMiami to Cuba Air Race in1938. In 1943, as the outbreakof WWII had necessitated theend of coastal flying in ourcountry, our family and hiscompany Cape Aircraft Inc. wasrelocated by the governmentfrom Falmouth MA to Glens FallsNY’s Floyd Bennett Field; pilots, mechanics, flight instructors, planes and even a hangar. Therethey trained pilots for the Army-Air Corps in the War TrainingService Program. Dad was theFBO there and at the “new”Warren County airport for manyexciting years after that- with mymom Edith always keeping thebooks and their office a place of

Special Featureorder and congeniality for thepilots, weather servicepersonnel, and any other visitorswho might have wandered in fora chat.

After years of handsome blackBuicks, my Dad got a horriblelight blue Caddy - long andobnoxious (I thought- at thesensitive age of 14). When hetook it a little above the speedlimit, on occasion, we would yell“I’m buffeting, I’m buffeting!”

One clear late fall evening wewere headed to Cohasset MA,home of my maternalgrandmother Edith Grassie andAunt Isobel. Night had fallen. AsMom and Dad worked practically24/7 as Fixed Base Operators ofthe Glens Falls Warren CountyAirport, enjoying every day ofoperating the many aviationservices of Cape Aircraft Inc.there, we were only planning ashort visit. We were zoomingat a good clip (maybe evenbuffeting) along the Mass Pikeprobably listening to a Red Soxgame on the radio. SuddenlyDad slowly pulled over into alarge dark rest stop, andstopped the car. “Let’s get outand look up.”, he said.” Sputnikis about to pass overhead.” Nowthis was 1957- long before GPStechnology, mind you. So Momand I dutifully exited the car and

scanned the dark skies. Veryshortly, a very small but verybright star-like object passed usoverhead, from horizon tohorizon. It was Sputnik I circlingon its very low orbit above theearth. True story! WOW-Unforgettable moment from aDad who always provided lotsof surprises!

A Farmer’s “Grace”

A visiting Pastor was attending a men’s breakfast in Farm County. He asked one of the impressive older farmers in attendance to saygrace that morning. After all were seated, the old farmer began— “Lord, I hate buttermilk.” The Pastor opened one eye and wondered to himself where thiswas going. Then the farmer loudly proclaimed, “and Lord, I hatelard.”

Now the Pastor was worried. However, without missing a beat, the farmer prayed on, “And Lord, you know I don’t care much forraw white flour, either.” Just as the Pastor was ready to stand up and stop everything, thefarmer continued,“But Lord, when you mix ‘em all together and bake ‘em up, I dolove fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up that we don’t like, when life getshard, when we just don’t under-stand what you are sayin’ to us,we just need to relax and wait ‘til You are done mixin’, and it willprobably be somethin’ even better than biscuits......Amen.”

On July 22nd, Delmarva FlyingFarmers met at Trap Pond StatePark in Laurel, DE for a picniclunch and a guided pontoonboat ride around the pond. Welearned that the pond was manmade, which is why Cypresstrees are growing in the pond. Also, there were many familymills around the pond at onetime, which are now gone. Itwas very interesting and Ilearned a lot about the historyof a pond just a few miles frommy house.

On August 7th, Joel and I wentto Utopia, Ontario to visit FlyingFarmer friends, Kim and SylviaMurphy. We planned to fly, butchose to drive because of badweather. We also visited Johnand Anne Donkers and touredtheir poultry operation. We hada great time.

Also on August 7th, we said“Good-bye” to another FlyingFarmer. Lawrence Ewing passedaway that afternoon. Keep the

family in your prayers. He willbe missed.

On August 19th, Delmarvahosted a Crab Cruise on apaddle boat leaving SuicideBridge Restaurant in Hurlock,MD. We enjoyed a three hourboat ride and all you can eatcrabs and fixins’. On Sunday, August 13, nineOntario Flying Farmer planesarrived at the well maintainedgrass strip at Port Elgin on abeautiful sunny day, somethingunusual this summer in Ontario. Here we were greeted by hostessGwen Wilson and her family, including Alan and Sandy Wilsonfrom Michigan, who were aboutto begin some holiday time inOntario.

Musical entertainment wasprovided before we enjoyeddelicious roast beef on a bun, accompanied by salads andwonderful desserts made byGwen’s daughter and her family.

Gwen’s nephew, Darren Howe, head of Western WasteManagement Facility of OntarioPower Generation, told us aboutstorage and processing of wastefrom generating plants inOntario. Much low levelcontamination material can beincinerated but other materialshave to be compacted forstorage. Strict regulations arefollowed and the licence has tobe renewed every ten years forthe temporary storage facility. Ittakes a long time to choose afinal repository as many criteria

He Only Takes the Best

God saw that he was gettingtired,A cure was not to be.

So He put His arms around himand whispered, “Come with Me.”

With tearful eyes, we watchedhim suffer,And saw him fade away.

Although we loved him dearly,We could not make him stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,Hard working hands to rest.

God broke our hearts to proveto us

He only takes “the best”.
