JAMESTOWN—WALKING WITH H ISTORY
Town Scrapbooks
The Town has been fortunate this summer to have Caroline Spillman, an NC State student as a summer in-
tern. Caroline has helped take pay-ments for utility bills, answered the
phone, helped with disposing of old records and watering flowers. But the biggest project she has undertaken was organizing photos and newspaper clippings of the Town’s history. Many of these clippings were in boxes or file drawers in no particular order. Caroli-
na has spent many hours sorting
them in chronological order. Then she began to glue them to pages. The end result is four vol-umes, neatly arranged and available in the Town Hall Lobby. We will not allow them to be taken from our office but anyone may stop by and peruse
the scrapbooks during normal office hours.
Caroline’s last day with us was July 26. She will be taking a family vacation and then heading back to
Raleigh for her fall semester.

Hello Jamestown,
I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer so far and the heat hasn’t gotten the best of you. We
have had the great opportunity of employing an intern over the summer. Caroline Spillman has been working
at Town Hall part-time since May. Many of you
have probably seen her if you’ve come by to pay
your water bill. Her main project over the past
few months has been documenting the history
of Jamestown through scrapbooks. The scrap-
books span from the early 1900’s until present
day. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the
scrapbooks she’s been putting so much time
and energy into! They will be available during
Town Hall business hours, but they will have to
remain on-site. It’s a fascinating and fun way to
get to know your Town a little bit better.
I would also like to remind everyone that this year is an
election year. There are three candidates running for Mayor: Keith
Volz, Lynn Montgomery, and Robert Frederick. The Mayoral Primary
Election will be held at Town Hall on Tuesday, October 10th 2017.
The candidates running for Town Council are as follows: John Capes,
Georgia Nixon, Rebecca Mann Rayborn, Pete Resh, Lawrence
Straughn and Martha Wolfe. The Regular Election will be held at
Town Hall on Tuesday, November 7th 2017. Please come out and
vote for those that you wish to represent you! The candidates that
win the election will be serving the community for the next two years
and will be making important decisions about your hometown.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Director of Planning Selected for Leadership Academy
The Town’s Director of Planning, Matthew Johnson, was selected to attend the UNC School of Gov-ernment’s Public Executive Leadership Academy (PELA). PELA provides city and county managers, assistants, and key department heads the opportuni-ty to learn about themselves as leaders and to gain skills to lead and man-age change within their community. Being selected from the many appli-cants as one of 25 participants from around the state is an honor. As a condition of their attendance, participants are responsible for selecting a “real world” project for leading change within the community and to devel-op a plan for implementation.
Matthew has indicated that his project will center on “Citizen Engagement”. Often, the process of citizen engagement is prescribed to local govern-ments by state and local laws, which may leave citizens feeling as if their opinions are unheard or underappreciated. Matthew feels that enhancing
the methods in which the Town engages with its citizens is important to receiving the information and feedback that is necessary to make informed decisions. He will be presenting his plan to the Town Council at a future date.
Should you have questions about the project or suggestions on how to improve communication between the Town and its residents, please do not hesitate to contact Matthew at [email protected] or call him at 336-454-7386.

We are through most of the summer and the greens at Jamestown are healing up nicely after aerification. The greens have softened a little and are more receptive to approach shots due to this process. Meanwhile, the Jamestown Park Golf Course has received an increase in play and revenue this year due to the greens and pro shop renovation. The staff and I are very pleased to entertain the old and new patrons of Jamestown Park Golf Course daily. We are constantly
trying to raise the bar on the playability of the facility and will continue to do so throughout the years.
Jamestown Parks have also installed baby changing stations in our bathrooms to help new mothers and fathers enjoy our parks with a place to do this necessary duty …. pun intended! Jamestown can also look forward to the upcoming music in the parks series with the Explosive Entertainment Band on September 16th in Wrenn Miller Park. This event
should be a lot of fun. Bring the family out to enjoy the entertainment provided by our town!
On another note, if you are a proud, or not so proud owner of a fescue home lawn, the next few months would be a great time to start preparing your yard for reseeding especially if you have not fared well throughout this hot summer. Bermu-da grass lawn owners should also start to consider applying a preemergent in the month of August to prevent pesky
winter weed infestations.
Sincerely
John Crowe
Department Head of Parks and Recreation
The Golf Course is now in the best condition of the year. The greens have healed nice-ly after aerifying in early July. We are accepting earlier tee times now so if you want to “beat the heat” we encourage booking your tee time in advance. The Jamestown Men’s golf Association will be hosting tournaments on August 12th and September 9th. If you would like to enter the tournament or find
out more about our men’s golf association, please call the Pro Shop at 336.454.4912.
Our Clubhouse Grill is open Tuesday through Sunday with daily lunch specials. We hope golfers and non-golfers will join us soon for some delicious food. Larger groups and clubs are welcome. See our Grill Man-
ager ,Cindy, for special seating and unique menu items.
The holidays are quickly approaching so now is the time to reserve the clubhouse for your company party or family gathering. Visit the Jamestown website for our facility use guide. Call the Pro Shop at 336.454.4912
