I LOVE MY MOM
~LETS THINK TOGETHER~
If you want to have this sentence, you will need words and also an
alphabet. This can be relate to the concept of chemistry, where those
of alphabet are the atoms, the words are the elements and the
sentence are the molecule.
Atom and molecule
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Define atom, elements and molecule.2. Describe the development of atomic model.3. Define proton number, neutron number and
nucleon number. 4. Determine the proton number, neutron
number and nucleon number of the element given.

HISTORY
ATOM
DEFINITION OF ATOM An atom is the smallest unit of a particular
substance. (SEE VIDEO) Atoms are use to create the elements.EXAMPLE : Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn)
DEFINITION OF MOLECULE Molecule are small particle that made up of
tinier particles called atoms. (SEE VIDEO) These molecules made up all living and non living
things.EXAMPLE : Ammonia (NH3), Water (H20)
STRUCTURE OF ATOM
Consist of
The red and black circles in the centre are the proton and neutron, they both make up the nucleus.
The blue circle is the electron. Electrons move around the nucleus through its
orbit.
Table below show you the relative mass and charge of these components of the atoms.
Particle Charge Mass
Proton +1 1
Electron -1 Negligible (0.00054)
Neutron 0 1
STRUCTURE OF MOLECULE
Molecules are made from as few as two atoms to hundred of millions atoms.
PROBLEM SOLVING
There are some terms that you need to know, that is: Atomic number - Also called proton number,
this is the number of protons the atom has.
Mass number - This basically tells you the number of particles in the nucleus.
EXAMPLE:
The top number is the mass number and thebottom is the atomic/proton number. So, neutron no = mass no – atomic/proton no = 56 – 26 = 30
