The One Year Course in Car Design Tools is designed to transfer a complete understanding of automotive strategy, planning and the relevant design techniques. The programme is devised as a first approach to the most fascinating and competitive careers in the world of design. It is intended as a primer to the Master's course in Car Design Tools.

CHARACTERISTICS AND AIMS The programme provides a tightly interlaced mix of strategic thinking and design methodology with a drive toward product and system innova-tion, marketing and communication insights, and car design hard skills. Teaching is arranged into a balanced combination of theoretical teaching and project-based training. The course is aimed at candidates with an aca-demic background not relevant to the main area of study, wishing to acquire the essential set of skills to approach the design process. Lessons are directly related to the requirements and the skills needed for the Master’s year in Car Design tools which is its idealcontinuation and focuses on more ad- vanced topics and abilities.

COURSE DURATION The duration of the Course is one academic year from October to July of the following year.Full time committment is erequired in-cluding mandatory attendanceee to the classes, preparation of coursework and individual study.

ENTRY Upon selection based on the portfolio review and on a personal as-sessment, the Course admits gradu-ates in Engineering and candidateswith a degree in disciplines that are not relevant to the design studies.

PROGRAMME OUTLINE* Sketching and 2D representation techniques The course coaches students through the fundamentals of scale, composi-tion and proportion of a vehicle getting them started with a series of draw-ing exercises of increasing complexity. Transport, in the case of a car, is to be conceived as a 3D object mastering the rules of perspectives and translating the concept idea into consistent pack-age drawing. Using both free hand and digital techniques participants will acquire an increasing accuracy in the visualization of ideas, volumes and design themes adding a feeling of vari-ous materials and textures. This capac-ity, which is crucial in the initial stage of the design process, is accompanied with training in the basics of techni-cal drawings. From the key sketches the students will develop orthographic views containing all the necessary in-formation to describe the object.

3D representation techniquesDigital design is a vital skill for all future professionals working in either design, engineering or computer aided styl-ing. Besides the main modelling tools, today the market can offer a variety of applications enabling the students to produce attractive visuals from 3D models while remaining accessible even to those who are newer to these kinds of tools.

Introduction to modelling3D modelling involves transferring 2D ortho drawings into physical objects. This activity enables students to visu-alise three-dimensional designs during the development process. The pro-gramme explores the use of physical modelling techniques following both geometric and sculptural approaches, as a tool for studying the form of ve-hicles and their surface treatment through a series of creative exercises.

Materials and technologies for automotive industryThe course will present a complete overview of both the aesthetic and the functional use of materials in the au-tomotive field. The impact of the new technological advancements and new generation materials on the design process will be examined. In the quest of a more sustainable mobility para-digm, particular attention will go to the variety of solutions available and their different implications.

Package-aero- architectureThe programme of the course takes students through the essentials of package engineering and the principles of ergonomics, aerodynamics and ve-hicle architecture in the perspective of an optimization of the operating effi-ciency. Occupants’ position, mechanical layout and human behaviour in relation with the new frontiers of information technology and car computing, will be deeply investigated according to a spe-cific design orientation.

Vehicle brandingStudents learn how to focus on the various possibilities for differentiating automotive products and thus achieve a competitive advantage making each manufacturer easily recognizable and memorable. As gaps in performance and overall quality are becoming more and more irrelevant among the lead-ing manufacturers, when it comes to present a vehicle to a reviewer or even market it to potential customers, the battle revolves around styling and the emotional benefits or other intangible assets. The programme thus integrates branding techniques into the design process teaching students how to pre-serve the brand heritage and leverage its DNA in the perspective of a continu-ous evolution.

Automotive industry and design cultureThis course explores the history and the main facts of the motorcar industry re-lating this to its developments in the as-sembly/manufacturing processes, to the evolution of a variety of cultural refer-ences and to the changes in life-styles.The goal here is enabling students to gain a conscious understanding of modern car design and of the future possibilities offered in this field with a particular focus on sustainable issues.

Design workshopIn parallel with the gradual acquisition of the main operational skills, which are specific to the automotive field, the pro-gramme offers a progressive immersion in car design practice. Some challenging themes are dealt with through a guided series of creative exercises facing differ-ent aspects of the design process. This is the decisive and conclusive stage in the process of personal empowerment of the participant, putting to the test all the abilities acquired over the year.

DIPLOMA AND ADMISSION TO THE MASTERS’ (elective and subject to ap-proval on the part of the admission committee). At the end of the One-year Courses the student who has attended the teaching programme with satisfac-tory results having received at least a passing grade in all the prescribed se-mestral courses will be awarded with the SPD Attendance Certificate com-pleted with Mark Sheet. Upon posi-tive notification of admission from the Direction of the school, the course can also be intended as a foundation to the Master's program in Car Design Tools.

SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design is the first postgraduate

school for design disciplines in Italy, founded in Milan

in 1954. Today SPD is an international laboratory

for exchanging experiences, making contact with companies

and professionals, for developing projects

by keeping a balance between function and expression,

and a solid orientation towards production

and experimentation. The work developed every year

and the young professionals from a strongly international

background that the school is able to offer

to the market are also testimony to this incredibly rewarding

creative dialogue with companies, manufacturers

and the various actors along the design chain.
