ABANA PRESIDENTS MESSAGE November, 1993

Dear ABANA Chapters, n

Thanks to all for taking the time to vote in the recent ABANA Board election. Each year, we ask you to cast your ballot for those candidates that you feel will do the best job for you. The annual election is one way you can make a difference in your association. The results of the election are as follows (5 Board Members Elected*):

*Clayton Carr *Jay-Burnham Kidwell 409 *George Dixon Ron Porter 365 ~-> *Pete Brandenburg 463 <- Will Hightower 345 7 *Andy Quittner 423 \ 4

Thanks for re-electing me to the ABANA Board. I will do my best to justify your trust.

I have thanked those who didn't make it this time, and have encouraged them to run next year. I'm sure you will agree that their willingness to serve the membership is deeply appreciated by all of us.

Something else you were asked to vote on were the changes to the ABANA By-Laws. The By-Laws have changed little in the 20 years ABANA has been in existence. Most of the changes were self explanatory, but we later found that there was confusion among the membership about why we proposed doing away with the "Family Membership." Since the By-Laws changes were passed (531 yes184 no), it may seem like a moot point to explain our reason for wanting to drop the Family Membership now. But, late as it is, we want you to understand why we proposed it, so here it is:

There was no benefit to having a Family Membership other than at ABANA Conference time. At the conferences, a family consisting of man, wife, and children could get in with the Family Membership. There was ,no other benefit. The fact is, that almost any regional conference you go to, a members family is welcome. 'It should be no different at an ABANA Conference. That said, there is no further reason for you to spend your hard earned extra $5 on a Family Membership, when you can get the same benefit out of a Regular Membership. Do yourself and your family a favor, and spend the $5 savings on safety glasses! (Maybe you thought I wouldn't get a plug in for safety?) '

This month, the ABANA Board will hold its annual November Budget Meeting at Emmert and Jane Studebaker's remarkable facility, the Studebaker Homestead in Tipp City, Ohio. The Board will be taking the results of conversations with Chapter Presidents and/or other officers to the meeting with them. If your Chapter has not been contacted, call me. We want to hear what you have to say. I will have more information on the November Budget Meeting in the January ABANA President's Message.

.. Warm regards,

Clayton Carr ABANA President

CHAPTER LIAISON NEWSLETTER November 1993

A'ITA' BOY: Serving as a board member on your national association (ABANA) is a thankless and time consuming service to blacksmithing. Thanks goes out to:

Retiring ABANA Board Members: Mike Bondi Ron Porter Brad Silberberg

Returning ABANA Board Members: President, Clayton Carr 2nd VP, Andy Quittner

New ABANA Board Members: Pete Brandenburg George Dixon Jay Burnham-Kidwell

And Jim Ryan, who resigned as an ABANA Board Member last year to successfully launch The Hammer's Blow.

CHAFI'ER BENEFIT: We recently had an inquiry from a small ABANA Chapter about disseminating information about a raffle. Let me remind everybody --every Chapter has the privilege of including up to one page in any monthly

4 mailing which will go out to each Chapter with b the President's letter and this Chapter Liaison

memo. (We are assuming that not every Chapter will watt to use this service at the same time!) If your Chapter needs bto get some information circulated, the deadline to be included in the mailing for the following month is the 15th. Contact Janelle at the ABANA Office.

RELATED EXPERTS AT HAMMER-INS: I understand that the Prairie Blacksmiths Association (ABANA Chapter) had several experts lecture at one of their meetings. What a great idea! Invite a metallurgist or a welding supply representative to lecture or demonstrate their new wares at one of your meetings.

BOY SCOUT MERIT BADGE: - Would you believe the Boy Scouts of America have declined ABANA's request to restore the blacksmithing merit badge? We don't want to quit. Will those Chapters that have a local Boy Scout badge program send copies of your set of requirements and a history of the number of participant's to ABANA Board Member, Joe Harris, 1 Maple Lane, Elkview, WV 25071. Or contact Joe at (304) 965-6476.

NEW ABANA CHAIYTER Please welcome the River Bluff Forge Council to our growing number of ABANA Chapters across continent (42 active ABANA Chapters to date). This new chapter is located in Tennessee.

THE HAMMER'S BLO IV: The ABANA Office has received several letters of praise and a long list of signatures obtained at Quad State Round-Up indicating that ABANA members would like to see the new ABANA newsletter, The Hantmr's Blow, continue as a budget priority. Thank you for your responses and interest in supporting this endeavor. The future of this newsletter will be determined at the November ABANA Budget Meeting, so we will update you in the next monthly mailing.

Change of Oflicers? Send your Chapter President & Editor changes in to the ABANA Office or the Chapter Liaison Committee.

November 2,1993 The following is a description of a class that I took at John C. Campbell Folk School. Attending this class in blacksmithing fundamentals was the result of a scholarship from F.A.B.A. and Clay Spencer. Thank you both for this fine opportunity.

I strongly recommend the J. C. Campbell Folk School to anyone wishing to take a smithing class. There are many courses offered at different skill levels with varied projects emphasized. Call 1-800-FOLKSCH for..

, a catalog.

rship project will include a photo album of the John C. Cam My s!m Folk School and other blacksmith shops. I will also complete a video tape of several project demonstrations. It is my hope that each of these will circulate to our regional F.A.B.A. gatherings.

Many thanks to Clay Spencer and the F.A.B.A. scholarship committee.

Sincerely,

&&d?& Harland H.Fisher (81 3) 481 -821 3

My instructor was Charles Orlando who was a September demonstrator at the Alabama State Conference. Charles is a farrier as well, so as he says, he is a "real blacksmithn. One of his favorite techniques of instruction was to first demonstrate with plasticene modeling clay then forge the steel object. He recommends this clay for practice because it responds like hot metal.

Charles demonstrated four items each day and students would make some or all of them depending on individual pace. He encouraged us to work on any special projects in which we were interested. Instruction and demonstrations were given on the following items: beam hooks, tongs, punches, tempering, heart hooks, forge welding, basket handle, candle cup from pipe, scrolls, fireplace shovel;wreath (bending on edge), hinges, nails, 112" hole in 112" bar, and a 318 tenon.

The final morning class was devoted to project completion, clean up, and a showing of all crafts in the main Kieth House building.

Here are some other points mentioned during Orlando's class: --No. 1 rule: GET IT HOT! No. 2 rule: HIT IT! -- Steel goes in fire horizontally, not down into fire pot. -- Use a wooden mallet to adjust a twist. --- Bendrng forks are made of same size stock as material to be bent. -- Liberty Tool Co. of Belfast Maine for old tools of all kinds. -- Took instructor three years to learn fire management. --Use plasticene for practice and demonstration. --Use overlapping hammer blows to straighten and clean up work. -- Management = left hand Labor = right hand -- Hot = 1900--2000 degrees --Drawing out is most used skill. -- If it's on the floor it's hot. -- Don'? quench unless necessary. -- Twistlng will take place where it is hottest. -- Leave hammer on anvil with face toward you. -- Upset at yellow heat.

-- No need to heat treat tools used on hot metal. --Anneal in vermiculite, lime, or ashes. -- Before using gas forge, spray fittings with soapy water to test

for leaks. -- Basket weave handle uses 511 6 round (not 114)

THE NORTHWEST REGION BY CLYDE PAYTON, PROGRAM COORDINATOR FOR NW REGION

The NW Region held its regular meeting on Saturday, August 14, 1993, at Dr. Ed and Nancy Crane's home blacksmith shop. Fifteen people attended and we decorated the heads of large bolts which Jerry Grice will use in the two large wooden doors of his home blacksmith shop. By the time I left the meeting 13 bolt heads had been finished. All were very unusual and some were quite fanciful.

A judging was held of these cute little oddities. First prize went to Jerry Grice who decorated a bolt head in a Spanish quatrefoil motif. Second prize went to Dr. Ed Crane who forged a bolt head into an anvil - this was quite clever and he sure did a good job with it. He even had a pritchell hole in the little scudder! The judge had one heck of a hard time selecting the winners because there were many very nice pieces of work in this group.

My favorite event of the day, however, was the wonderful feast we all enjoyed at noon time, served up by Nancy Crane - this was quite a wonderful treat. I don't know which we had the better time with - the smithing, or the eatingll

The following appeared in my e-mail. I thought that everyone in FABA ~ L f 5 bzl 5 just might be interested in the adventures of the wandering editor!

To: F r : Re: Da:

Steve & Kimmy Bloom Bob Jacoby Dog's Eye View From Moscow Thursday October 7, 1993

On Sunday October 3, Donna the kids and I were heading out to Pizza Hut (4 blocks from our apartment) when we got a frantic phone call from some American friends in the neighborhood. Our friends were on the Arbat (a historical shopping district in Moscow) with their two young children when the hard-line communist demonstrators set up burning barricades blocking traffic in central Moscow. Our friends ran for cover when the shooting started and made it home by traveling the back routes. After their phone call we decided not to go out.

We were watching Russian television on Sunday night when the rebels captured the Ostankino television tower. Most stations went off the air and the others started broadcasting inane nature shows eaturing fish and wildlife!

On Monday morning we awoke at 8:15 (one of the advantages of working across the hall from where you live) to loud booms that were shaking the glass in our windows. There's a building under construction next to our apartment and I explained to Donna that they were probably driving construction piles into the ground. When I recognized the other "construction sounds" as machine gun fire, we turned on the short wave radio and heard the news that the Russian White House was under attack. The television stations were coming on intermittently during the morning and one station tuned into the "live feed" from CNN. We're located 7 blocks from the Russian White House and it was really unforgettable to watch Russian tanks fire 125mm shells on the television while imultaneously hearing them explode out our window. (Simulcast!)

Naturally, we stayed indoors and away from the windows throughout the day. It was interesting to watch the crowds of spectators gather near the White House on television. (Apparently Darwinism isn't taught widely in the school systems here.) We spoke to our friends often during the day to learn what was happening in different parts of the city and we were able to place phone calls to the states to let our pqrents know that we were safe.

t

The most frightening part was Monday evening after Rutskoi and Khasbulatov surrendered. The American Embassy warned that there were 70 rebel snipers within a ten block radius of our apartment! We were advised to draw all the shades and stay away from the windows. There was still heavy gunfire in the city including a large gun battle at the Itar Tass building - one block from our house. We didn't see it, because we weren't looking out the windows, but our friends in the neighborhood reported seeing tracer bullets streaking over the buildings all night. Of the four foreign '. families (Three American, One British) living in the neighborhood, two left Russia on Tuesday.

We decided to wait a few days to see if things calmed down. It's Thursday and while things aren't completely back to normal, there's stability and we don't sense any immediate danger.

Please hang onto this note and show it to me the next time I complain of boredom!

Best Wishes, Bob, Donna, Cameron, and Robert [--message ends--]

FABA Officers & Trustees October 14, 1993

Gentlemen:

As most of you are probably aware, I didn't run fast enough at the conference and am being nominated for Program Chairman (1994-1995). If there are no other nominees

(and given the dearth in the past, this is likely), I would like to know if anyone has an objection to me acting as an ad hoc chairman once the nominations close until the formalities of the elections are over. I would like to get moving on sounding out potential demonstrators and on designing and distributing a survey to the membership (via the Clinker Breaker) just as soon as possible. Of course, if there is one or more additional nominees, just disregard this letter. 1'11 be at the Jamboree if anyone wants to discuss this.

THE NORTHWEST REGION By Clyde Payton, Region Coordinator

... will have a regular monthly meeting in December after all.. We need another WORK DAY at Sam Adkins Park in Blountstown in order to finish up the brick forge which we are building for the blacksmith shop in that part of the park called the PANHANDLE PIONEER SETTLEMENT. We hope to complete this brick forge with one more work day. 4 This meeting will be on the second Saturday of December - the t

llth, 1993. We would like to get started by 9:00 a.m. since we will need as much of the day as possible. Willard Smith will have all the supplies and equipment which we will need. You may bring your own masonry tools if you like. So - please come, take part in this most worthwhile civic project. This is going to be a very nice and well represented mid-1800's style blacksmith shop

i I

for which FABA can be most proud. Lunch will be served by the Park support staff - bring your own cold drinks if you wish. Please see Fv/t-sptkj+ for a map to this Park.
