Transitions

From the Deskof the Director—Winter 2008

As a new year begins, it is a time to think of friends and family and toevaluate our accomplishments ofthe preceding year. I am filled withpride to see how far we have come inbringing the International House family back together again in the lastfew years.

We have seen tremendous growthin the programs and special events.Last year International House was hostto over 500 different events in the performing arts, lectures, conferencesand workshops. All of this enrichesthe experiences of current studentswho live in International House.

We have increased our newslettersfrom one to three annually. By sharingstories of today and features from the past, we are keeping our friendsand alumni engaged in the ever-changing and vibrant life of the House. Our Archives Project has helped us connect with former residents andfriends and future plans include assisting former residents in connect-ing with one another.

The response from our alumni and friends has been heartening. Lastyear we received the largest ever dollar support in our annual giving andwe are grateful for this support. Wemust continue building on this as wework to meet the needs of today’sresidents. We hope that you will con-tinue to support our efforts as we look to build a resident lawn and gardenand continue to expand our fellow-ship programs.

The New Year is full of possibilitiesand I wish you joy in the pursuit oftheir fulfillment.

The 1930s was the era of aviation heroes.Icons like CharlesLindbergh and AmeliaEarhart inspireddreams of unfetteredtravel over uncharteredpaths. For WolfgangLangewiesche, aGerman-born bespectacled graduate studentstudying library science at the University ofChicago, the lure of the open sky proved irre-sistible. “Every afternoon at three the sound of the transcontinental ship came down to mein the library, plaguing me …it was fresh fromthe West, only a matter of hours, and that tootormented me; for out there was the countryI liked, the part of America I had cut my teethon…One afternoon at three, something snapped:I put some markers into my books and put on

my hat and drove my old car to the nearestused car lot. It fetched exactly seventy-five dollars: five hours of ship time. Out to the airport…stripped of my worldly goods, a happy

fool…I was going to flycross-country. I was goingto make this thing workor give up.” His passion foraviation was legendaryamong his friends at Inter-national House, who sometimes accompaniedhim on short flights to help pay for training time

he needed to pilot a plane cross-country.Langewiesche would go on to chronicle hislife in flight in America from the Air, but it ishis now classic work, Stick and Rudder, published in 1944, that remains the leadingbook on the art of flying.
