Dear Golden Key Members and Friends:For more than 36 years, Golden Key International Honour Society has supported high achieving students and we continue to recognize the importance of helping our members reach their goals. One of the most signi!cant ways we accomplish this is through our scholarship and awards program. Since our founding in 1977, Golden Key has awarded more than $10 million in scholarships and awards. In 2011, Golden Key began awarding $1 million each year. We are proud of our commitment to award this amount annually—the largest amount of any honor society—to our deserving members.

Golden Key’s purpose is to enable students to realize their full potential. We o"er education-based scholarships, as well as awards for service and leadership achievements. By providing scholarships that allow members to continue their education, study abroad, present their research, reduce their debt and more, we are helping to develop the next generation of leaders.

Our scholarship recipients are incredible students. #ey have achieved academic excellence, served their communities, become leaders on campus, overcome hardships and dared to dream big. We are delighted to assist in making their dreams a reality. #is scholarship report provides detailed information about our scholarship program and the 2013 recipients.

Our achievements would not be possible without the support and dedication of Golden Key members, donors and volunteers. We thank you for the important role that you play in helping Golden Key members realize their potential.Sincerely,

Bradford W. Rainey Executive Director

Education Debt Reduction Scholarship, $5,000Zahra Ate! made a bold decision at age eighteen. Facing challenges and obstacles

from an oppressive government, she 1ed from Iran and came to the United States. Zahra always dreamt of being the !rst in her family (including six siblings) to attend college. With

those goals, she headed to the United States where she did not know anyone and didn’t speak any English, having earned her high school diploma in Farsi. She also had !nancial obstacles to overcome in her pursuit of academic success.

“My arrival to America prompted great di2culties in adapting and assimilating to American culture. Surviving in a di"erent world included learning the English language, a lack of social support networks, and inadequate employment opportunities were challenges that I had to overcome,” Zahra explained. Not one to give up, Zahra devoted a lot of her time to studying English. #rough determination, she learned English and enrolled in community college.

Next, Zahra enrolled in University of California, Los Angeles. She excelled in her studies and achieved many academic awards as well as recognition for her volunteer and service initiatives. One of the most notable awards she received was the President’s Volunteer Service Award from the Unites States presidential o2ce in recognition and appreciation of her extensive volunteer work and commitment to strengthening the nation. While in her undergraduate studies, she started taking psychology courses and soon became fascinated with the subject. As her passion developed for the !eld, she found a deep desire to help people achieve optimal mental health. #roughout this time, Zahra was also devoted to developing professionally. She interned at a child care center that dealt with development issues, became a peer counselor and coordinator at the university and interned at an adult care center.

Zahra continues to dream big as she works towards completing her master’s degree. “As a future Marriage and Family #erapist, I would like to help people achieve a good mental attitude, alleviate emotional symptoms, improve coping skills and change negative behavior patterns. By guiding and empowering my clients toward their personal goals, I would like to make positive and inspirational changes in their lives,” she said. “By o"ering personal enrichment and self-improvement seminars, I want to raise awareness about mental health issues and actively !ght the stigma associated with mental illness. I am motivated to help people in crisis to cope with their emotional di2culties while empowering them to maintain positive changes. I take pride in changing client’s negative behavior pattern by using therapy to advance their psychological well being and emotional development.”

#e Education Debt Reduction Award is aiding Zahra in doing just that. “Golden Key’s generosity truly makes a signi!cant di"erence in my e"orts to achieve my full potential. It allows me to set my standards even higher, and pursue bigger and more valuable goals,” she said. Eventually Zahra hopes to get a Ph.D. and open her own practice in underserved areas to provide clients with less expensive, accessible and e"ective psychotherapy resources.

Commitment to Service Scholarship, $1,000While only in middle school when the World Trade Center fell, the event sparked an immutable national pride in the heart of Joseph Rogan. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted as a split option soldier. While a Specialist in the Army Reserve and a non-contracted ROTC Cadet balancing his Reserve obligations, full-time employment and undergraduate studies, his unit received deployment orders to Operation Iraqi Freedom. “Although an ROTC contract would defer my deployment, I knew I could not let my Soldiers face that challenge alone: I declined my contract, maintained loyalty to my unit, and found myself in a combat zone,” Joseph stated. At only twenty years old, Joseph became a Sergeant and gained unfathomable responsibility to make decisions that literally meant life or death.

Joseph took it as an opportunity to succeed. He said, “While in Iraq, I realized that I could put forth the e"ort to set the standard, I need not settle for mediocrity.” Part of his job as a Sergeant on a Police Transition Team was to evaluate Iraqi Law and Iraqi Police compliance with that law. Since the penal code was written under Saddam Hussein, the punishments and policies were o4en extreme and cruel and did not include the Due Process rights that are celebrated in the United States. Initially desiring a career in law enforcement, his experience with legal issues led him to start contemplating a di"erent direction.

Joseph’s time in the military had a profound impact on him and his future goals. “How has the military changed my life? It made my life; it gave me direction, con!dence, diversity, motivation, self-awareness, sel1essness, responsibility, and commitment to purpose. As for lessons: Accomplish the mission. Whether it be bringing an MP squad back from a combat patrol, a test in Civil Procedure, or repairing a shaky relationship,” he said.

Upon his return, Joseph maintained his dedication to excel. He received all A’s during his undergraduate studies at #e University of Central Florida while working multiple jobs, being heavily involved on campus and undergoing two separate surgeries for injuries sustained in Iraq. As he re1ected on his deployment and the injustices he saw with the law, he realized that change must come from the inside, which lead to his decision to attend law school. He graduated from Georgetown Law in May of 2014, while balancing school, physical therapy, and several surgeries. #e Commitment to Service Scholarship helped make that education possible.

A4er serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Paul W. Grimm, a U.S. district judge and fellow Army veteran, Joseph accepted a position as an associate with the Jacksonville, FL o2ce of Brennan, Manna & Diamond, where he focuses on civil litigation. He still incorporates his military experience and educational knowledge to in1uence the community and the legal profession. “In one capacity or another, I plan to serve my county and my community, and to use the knowledge of intelligence and government operations gained in the military, to better American freedom,” Joseph asserted.

“As a service director of Golden Key at UCR, I had the opportunity to put together a project committed to make learning fun for disadvantage 1st graders and other service

missions that address community needs. GK has also broaden my horizons through numerous measures: serving communities, attending professional workshops, delivering my own workshop, working and networking with like-minded individuals on campus and across the global, and meeting inspirational speakers. !is scholarship will certainly alleviate my "nancial burden and allow me to concentrate on pursuing my career in medicine. !ank you, Golden Key International Honour Society, for this generous award and helping me realize I had the key all along.”
