•• Page 36 " - WEEKEND IN BUSINESS I ( ' ·1 t. . Common pas.5p0rt to lift earnings of African airlines By PATRICK ALUSHULA Airlines fr om Africa could increase their an- nual ea rnings by a bout 24 per cent if the pro- posed common passport for a ll citizens within Africa n Union is introduced. According to a rece nt stud y by Sa bre Corpo- rat io n, a US-based technology service provider to global trave ll ers, airlines opera ting wi thin Af rican destinatio ns wilJ see their a nnual earn- ings per passenger rise by 24 per cent to $1,508 (Shl 53,442). Curren tl y, earnin gs per individual travell er in Afr ica averages $1,1 49 (Shll 6,913). There- fore the passport could bec ome the magic wand to reverse the dwindling for tunes that have become a characteristic of a majority of African airlines. The p ro posed pan -Af rican pass port wilJ eliminate the need for vi sas and help open up African skies. Currently, just a bout 13 Afri can states are open to all African citizens without advance visas, with many placing severe re- strictions on travel. As per AU 's age nda 2063, the common pa ss- port is expected to be operational in 2018. The Interna ti ona l Air Transport Ass ociation (IA T A) has held that high taxation a nd locked territo- ries have mad e it hard for Afri can airlines to succeed. Despite intern ational airlines con- trolling 88 per cent of African airs pa ce, Sabre Corporation Vice president fo r Europe, Middle East and Afri ca, Dino Gelrnetti, beli eves there is ro om for growth. "African airlines have a real opportunity to win the li on's share of bookings by addressing the pain po ints of travell ers and going the extra mile to improve their experience," said Ge lmet- ti. In the research that covered four major economies in Africa- Ke nya, South Africa, Egyp t a nd Nigeria- the passe ngers inter- vie wed and potential travellers expressed wilJ - ingness to pay more for ancilJary services while trave ll ing. Wh ile 84 per ce nt of res pondents are willing to spend on ancilJar ies, one third said that they would actually spend more than $100 (Shl0 ,170). The most popul ar catch was Wi -Fi service followed by food and beverag e. From the curre nt average of $90 (Sh9,1 57) that passengers are spe nding on ancilJaries, those s urveyed from Ke nya said that they would be willing to spend extra $25 (Sh2,566) if se rvices improve. Nigerian travellers, cur- rently spending $99- the highest among the four economies- said they could lift their spending to $113. South Africans and Nigeri- ans are willing to spe nd an additional $14 and $8 respectively. In the past two years, about 24 per cent of the res pondents had travelled by air. Nigeria had the highest air travell ers (35 per ce nt) while Kenya had 15 pe r cent comp ared to So uth Af rica's 13 per cent. Ab out a third of them expressed fr ustra ti on about lack of flights to take them to the target destinations and the quoted fare changing be- fore the final booking is made. The findings of the research may warm the hearts of African airlines. IA TA has already pro- jected that combined, the Afr ican airlines will soak up a loss of $5 00 milli on (ShS0.8 billion) this year. ' ·1 t . . Common pas.5p0rt to lift earnings of African airlines

By PATRICK ALUSHULA

Airlines from Africa could increase their an-nual earnings by about 24 per cent if the pro-posed common passport for all citizens within African Union is introduced.

According to a recent study by Sabre Corpo-ration, a US-based technology se rvice provider to global travellers, airlines operating within African destinations wilJ see their annual earn-ings per passenger rise by 24 per cent to $1,508 (Shl53,442).

Currently, earnings per individual traveller in Africa averages $1,149 (Shll6,913). There-fore the passport could become the magic wand to reverse the dwindling fortunes that have become a characteristic of a majority of African airlines.

The pro posed pan-African passport wilJ eliminate the need for visas and help open up African skies. Currently, just about 13 African states are open to all African citizens without advance visas, with m any placing severe re-strictions on travel.

As per AU 's agenda 2063, the common pass-port is expected to be operational in 2018. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has held that high taxation and locked territo-ries have made it hard for African airlines to succeed. Despite international airlines con-trolling 88 per cen t of African airspace, Sabre Corporation Vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Dino Gelrnetti, believes there is room for growth.

"African airlines have a real opportunity to win the lion's share of bookings by addressing the pain points of travellers and going the extra mile to improve their experience," said Gelmet-ti.

In the research that covered four major economies in Africa- Kenya, South Africa, Egyp t and Nigeria- the passengers inter-vie wed and potential travellers expressed wilJ-ingness to pay more for ancilJary services while travelling.

While 84 per cent of respondents are willing to spend on ancilJaries, one third said that they

would actually spend more than $100 (Shl0,170). The most popular catch was Wi-Fi service followed by food and beverage.

From the current average of $90 (Sh9,157) that passengers are spending on ancilJaries, those surveyed from Kenya said that they would be willing to spend extra $25 (Sh2,566) if services improve. Nigerian travellers, cur-rently spending $99- the highest among the four economies- said they could lift their spending to $113. South Africans and Nigeri-ans are willing to spend an additional $14 and $8 respectively.

In the past two years, about 24 per cent of the respondents had travelled by air. Nigeria had the highest air travellers (35 per cent) while Kenya had 15 per cent compared to South Africa's 13 per cent.

About a third of them expressed frustration about lack of flights to take them to the target destinations and the quoted fare changing be-fore the final booking is made.

The findings of the research may warm the hearts of African airlines. IATA has already pro-jected that combined, the African airlines will soak up a loss of $500 million (ShS0.8 billion) this year.
