Welcome to ICEIC 2018
International Conference on Electronics,
Information and Communication
Welcome to Honolulu, the capital of the Hawaii Islands,
for the 17th meeting of the International Conference on
Electronics, Information, and Communication (ICEIC). Since
the Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers (IEIE)
first organized the ICEIC to share Korean advanced ICT
technology to Asian-Pacific countries in 1991, the ICEIC con-
tinues developing its contents and size. In 2012, The IEIE and
IEEE Consumer Electronics Society (CES) started co-organ-
izing the meeting to transform the ICEIC into a world-wide
event in the field of ICT-based consumer electronics.
This year, the ICEIC 2018 is organized by the IEIE and
CES at Honolulu, Hawaii from January 24 to 27, 2018. On
behalf of the organizing committee, we give our cordial wel-
come to all participants of ICEIC 2018. We appreciate all
the voluntary efforts from the organizing and technical pro-
gram committees, invited speakers, session chairs, tutorial
speakers, IEIE staff, and volunteering students.
We hope all the participants to exchange their academic
and technical experience in oral and poster sessions. Three
world-renowned invited speakers will share the leading
technology about 5G mobile communications, evolution of
memory solutions, and information theory in wireless
networks. The carefully organized tutorials and special ses-
sions will provide a deeper level of introduction and future
trends, respectively. In addition to the technical meetings,
the Aloha state awaits your snorkeling in Hanauma Bay,
visiting Haleakala National Park, and surfing at Waikiki
beach for your life-long memory.
The success of ICEIC 2018 depends on your participants.

Mobile Communications Network Evolution and
Distributed MIMO for 5G Enhanced Mobile
Broadband
Abstract
Mobile communications network has now evolved into
the 4th generation (4G). Mobile broadband services have
been becoming more and more popular. Recently, the de-
velopment of 5G network for providing 5G enhanced mo-
bile broadband (eMBB) services is on-going worldwide.
Since the available frequency bandwidth is limited, the area
spectrum efficiency (ASE), bps/Hz/km2, has been the most
important concern for the last few decades. An increasing
popularity of broadband services causes a problem of in-
creased energy consumption. Therefore, the energy effi-
ciency (EE), bits/Joule, has also become an important con-
cern for battery operated mobile terminals in particular.
Distributed MIMO can improve both ASE and EE
simultaneously.
After briefly overviewing the evolution of mobile com-
munications network, we will introduce the recent advances
in distributed MIMO. A number of distributed antennas are
deployed over a traditional macro-cell area covered by a
macro-cell base station (MBS). They are connected to the
MBS by the optical mobile fronthaul. Distributed MIMO
exploits the spatial distribution of both antennas and users.
Some of distributed antennas near a user terminal are se-
lected to perform distributed MIMO cooperative trans-
mission, which includes frequency-domain equalization,
single-user MIMO diversity, multi-user MIMO multi-
14
plexing, and low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR)
waveform design. Also, we will present multi-user schedul-
ing and MIMO channel estimation. Since distributed anten-
nas near a user are selected, MIMO channel has a sparse
structure. This sparsity of MIMO channel can be exploited
for channel estimation.

Information Theory Insights Into Energy
Consumption in Wireless Networks
Abstract
Information theory has been fundamental to the develop-
ment of wireless communications. Results from informa-
tion theory have been instrumental in increasing capacity of
wireless networks. However, in addition to capacity, energy
consumption is an important design consideration is wire-
less networks. It influences battery life of wireless devices,
as well as the environment in a not insignificant way. In this
talk we will discuss the insights into energy consumption
that has been provided by information theory, and how this
should influence design of wireless networks and devices.
We will show how network topology and constraints on
bandwidth and delay affects energy, and which design strat-
egies can be employed to overcome these constraints.

3D Video Capturing and Processing Techniques for
AR/VR Contents Generation
Abstract
With the emerging market of AR/VR imaging products,
3D video has become an active area of research and devel-
opment in recent years. 3D video is the key to provide more
realistic and immersive perceptual experiences than the ex-
isting 2D counterpart. There are many applications of 3D
video, such as 3D movie and 3DTV, which are considered
the main drive of the next-generation technical revolution.
Stereoscopic display is the current mainstream technology
for 3DTV, while auto-stereoscopic display is a more prom-
ising solution that requires more research endeavors to re-
solve the associated technical difficulties.
In this tutorial lecture, we are going to cover the current
state-of-the-art technologies of 3D video capturing and
processing for AR/VR applications. After defining the basic
requirements for 3D realistic multimedia services, we will
cover various multi-modal immersive media processing
techniques. We also address the depth estimation problem
for natural 3D scenes and discuss several challenging issues
of 3D video capturing and processing, such as camera cali-
bration, image rectification, illumination compensation and
color correction. In addition, we are going to discuss some
MPEG activities for 3D video coding, including depth map
estimation, prediction structure for multi-view video cod-
ing, multi-view video-plus-depth coding, and intermediate
view synthesis for immersive 3D video display applications.

Signal Processing and Machine Learning for
Brain-Machine Interfacing
Abstract
This tutorial addresses a historical background and re-
cent progress of electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-
machine interfaces (BMI). This interdisciplinary area is re-
lated to the cutting edges of neuroscience, signal processing,
and machine learning. In this tutorial, particularly, I would
like to talk about the importance of neural modulation and
demodulation of EEG signals. Several types of modulation
induced by external stimuli and/or mental tasks will be ex-
plained with neuroscientific findings. The modulated sig-
nals are measured as brain responses such as event-related
potentials (ERP), steady-state evoked potentials (SSEP),
and event-related synchronization/desynchronization (ERS/
ERD), which are then demodulated to estimate the original
stimuli or tasks. This is called demodulation or decoding,
which needs efficient signal processing and machine learn-
ing algorithms. I will emphasize the aspect of signal proc-
essing and machine learning in the application to BMI. I
will exhibit some interesting demonstrations of recently de-
veloped BMIs for better understanding.

Ultra-low Power/Energy SRAM Design for
Internet-of-Things
Abstract
Recently, various ultra-low power applications such as
Internet-of-Things (IoT), wearable devices, and biomedical
devices have emerged opening up a new domain of in-
tegrated circuits design. In these applications, ultra-low
voltage circuit techniques for improving the power and en-
ergy efficiencies have been the main research focus. One of
the most challenging functional blocks in ultra-low power
systems is memory where SRAMs are dominantly employed.
Since SRAMs occupy majority of the power in those sys-
tems, design of ultra-low power SRAMs is a critical task for
power and energy efficiencies. One of the most popular
SRAM design methodology for ultra-low power applica-
tions is using aggressively scaled supply voltage. However,
this deteriorates various SRAM design parameters such as
stability, sensing margin, write margin, etc. Various techni-
ques for ultra-low voltage SRAMs have been reported to
tackle the limitations at ultra-low voltage operation. This tu-
torial will provide the basics in ultra-low voltage SRAMs
followed by the trend in various state-of-the-art ultra-low
voltage SRAMs. More detailed ultra-low voltage SRAM de-
sign works developed by the author's group will also be
explained. Finally, we will discuss future directions in ul-
tra-low voltage SRAMs including various emerging non-
volatile memory devices such as STTRAM, RRAM, etc.

Variational Optimization for Image Processing and
Understanding
Abstract
Variational approaches are among the most classical and
established methods to solve a multitude of problems aris-
ing in computer vision and image processing. Over the past
decades, powerful methods have been evolved in various
image processing and vision areas, such as image denoising,
optical flow estimation, image segmentation and 3D re-
construction, both in terms of optimization efficiency and
in terms of better formulation. In this tutorial, I will in-
troduce the basic concepts of variational optimization, which
can be well formulated for solving various ill-posed problems.
Especially we will focus on image denoising, which is in the
simplest form and thus easily understood. After I show how
the problem can be formulated as variational problems, its
variants will be introduced. Subsequently, I will also focus
on recent optimization techniques to efficiently minimize
energy functionals formulated in the variational methods.

alive with paniolo (cow-
boys), Chinese dragons,
ethnic festivals, culinary
events and an exotic col-
lection of celebrations.
Throughout the year, you’ll
also encounter parades,
street parties, food and craft fairs, concerts and family activ-
ities that honor every aspect of Hawaii’s diverse culture.

Hawaiian Arts & Culture: The Expression of Aloha
The diverse culture of
Hawaii is expressed in
(among other things) lang-
uage, music, art, theater,
dance, film, cuisine and
a multitude of festivals.
At the core of each is the
spirit of aloha, in the flu-
id arc of a hula dancer’s
hands or in the soft rhythm
of a slack-key guitar. The
“Aloha Spirit” is the co-
ordination of mind and heart within each person. It brings
each person to the self. Each person must think and emote
good feelings to others. In the contemplation and presence
of life force.
Surfing
If you dream of riding
the waves, there’s no bet-
ter place to learn how
than right here in the
birthplace of surfing.
