swirling energy, as if from the sun. Know in your

heart that, whatever your situation, all will be well.

2 Shift your focus to the knotwork around the central

circle. Let the interweaving path remind you that

every event in life leads to new connections and

exciting possibilities.

3 Move outward to the spirals in the square

to inspiration, even in the firm grounding of

daily life.

RECOMMENDED COLOR PALETTEKNOTWORK: Red for passion, strength, lust

SHOOTS and LEAVES: Green for nature, fertility, charity, prosperity, health

FLOWERS: Pink for unity, honour, truth, romance, happiness

BERRIES: Purple for piety, sanctity, sentimentality

1 Rest your gaze on the entwined roots at the center

of the mandala—strong and life-giving, yet

concealed as they would be in life. Draw a parallel

between this and your own invisible life-force,

or energy, which is constantly coursing through

you and nourishing every cell in your body.

2 Let your eyes travel outward through the circles

of interwoven flowers. Notice that the blossoms

come in various shapes and sizes, yet each is as

beautiful as the next, and they all live in harmony,

complementing one another’s radiance.

3 Gaze softly upon the whole mandala. Feel the

fertile abundance of nature, its splendour and

intricacy. Relax, and let your spirit open itself

to beauty, like the petals of a flower caressed

by sunlight.

RECOMMENDED COLOR PALETTEFOUNTAIN: Yellow for compassion, rootedness, earth

WATER AND SQUARE PATTERN:White for knowledge, purity, longevity

RING AROUND FOUNTAIN: Blue for infinity, ascension, healing;

with White water drops for knowledge, purity, longevity

FOUR INNER PAVILIONS: Green for harmony, growth, fertility

FOUR COMPASSES: Yellow (standing in for gold) for holiness, the sun, enlightenment

OUTERMOST FRAME: Red for love, empathy, intuition

1 Gaze at the whole mandala, taking in the right-

angled frame (the cosmos) as well as the innermost

circle (eternity and spiritual perfection). Then

think of yourself as a privileged visitor to the

sacred palace. Enter the outer courtyard and feel

the spiritual atmosphere seep into you.

2 Now move in deeper to the four inner pavilions,

which represent the four elements—water, air,

earth and fire (from noon, clockwise). These dwell

in the cosmos, but also within you. Tap into their

energies before progressing to the inner sanctum,

whose circle is the fifth element, spirit.

3 You are now in the heart of the garden,

refreshed by the waters of the fountain—the

life force, endlessly flowing. Imagine the water

filling you up with its spiritual goodness—feel

yourself brimming with love and compassion,

and let it flow out to share with the world.

RECOMMENDED COLOR PALETTELARGE CIRCLE and OVERLAPPING SQUARES: Yellow for compassion, rootedness, earth

CENTRAL DIAMOND and GEMSTONES IN LARGE CIRCLE: Pink for beauty, perfection, the Buddha

SMALL DIAMONDS IN SQUARE FRAMES: White for knowledge, purity, longevity

CIRCULAR PATTERN AROUND DIAMOND: Blue for infinity, ascension, healing; White for knowledge, purity, longevity

RADIAL PATTERNS: Choose an alternation of colors according to your intuition

1 Start by contemplating the geometric framework

of this mandala—the circle symbolizing eternity

and the interlocking squares denoting the created

world. All eight points of the two squares touch the

circle—when eternity is glimpsed from within the

prison of time, the prison walls dissolve.

2 Now, turn your gaze to the decorative framework

within which the central diamond sits. Spiritual

understanding requires a gracious setting of good,

loving thoughts and selfless actions.

3 Take the scintillating radiance of the diamond

deep into your mind, and let it lie there as a

reflection of your blossoming self, the flowering

of being beyond becoming. Feel its spiritual

force—the cutting edge of enlightenment.

Recommended coloR PaletteFISH: Orange for beauty, creativity, spirituality

WATER: Blue for tranquility, spirit, freedom, infinity

PAVING STONES and DOLPHIN SPOUTS:Grey for potential, uncertainty, origins

GRASS, FOLIAGE and PLANTS: Green for fertility, life-force, renewal

CIRCLE OF FENCING: Brown for the man-made world, restraint, boundaries, groundedness

1 Concentrate first on the element of water. The

life-giving powers of the water, which plays

endlessly through the fountain, give sustenance to

the fish, just as love gives sustenance and strength

to the soul.

2 Now turn to the structure within which the water

is contained. The paving around the pond is made

up of uneven blocks fitted together perfectly—a

symbol of the work done by unconditional love

and of love’s tolerance of imperfections.

3 Lastly, notice that you cannot focus on all four

of the trees that flourish outside of the garden

at once, but that you can hold them at the

edge of awareness, just as love can contain all

things. Think of love as the soil, rain and roots

of existence.

4 Softening your gaze, take the mandala as a whole

into your mind, and let it rest there as an emblem

of wholeness, whose energies permeate through

your unconscious mind.

Recommended coloR PaletteYIN YANG SYMBOLS: Red for the feminine principle, compassion, inwardness, stillness;

White for the masculine principle, insight, outwardness, action

FLOWERS: Green for fertility, earth, nature, renewal; Orange for beauty, creativity, spirituality

OUTERMOST CIRCLE: Blue for tranquility, eternity, perfection, immortality

OTHER AREAS: Yellow for solar power, creativity, spirituality; Purple for grace, abundance, beauty

1 Look first at the flowers and other motifs set

within the main geometric shapes of this mandala.

Appreciate the contrast and interplay of the

squares and rectangles (the material world) with

the circles (eternity).

2 Now turn your attention to the central yin yang

image. See how each of the two elements contains

the seed of its opposite. Relate this idea to the

opposites balanced within yourself: masculine/

feminine, action/stillness, insight/compassion,

outward/inward, and so on.

3 Look at the tiny yin yang symbols between the

outer square and the surrounding circle, touching

both—their positioning on the boundary between

created and spiritual worlds is significant. Think

of these symbols as atoms that occur in everything,

the universal stuff of existence.

4 See the mandala with all its embellishments as

both the cosmos and the individual cell—each

is a mirror of the other, the part and the whole

inseparable within a holistic system.
