These businesses depend on trucks to deliver raw and finished goods to factories, distribution centers, retail outlets, construction sites and more. Trade and manufacturing jobs make up nearly one third of the jobs in the four-state study area. Add to that the transportation, retail and agricultural businesses that depend on trucks, and the role of freight becomes even more significant. As the primary east-west link in the upper Midwest, I-70 plays a critical role in the economies of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. In the manufacturing and retail sectors, every step is taken to help reduce costs and deliver a quality product. Some consolidate shipments, while others utilize a just-in- time model for manufacturing, which means they have smaller inventories on hand, and depend on deliveries of supplies at key times to keep production lines moving. For may firms, truck, ships and trains serve as the factory “warehouses” for parts and supplies. And while goods can be moved across great distances by air, water and rail, trucks -- at a minimum -- are often the critical first and last links in the delivery chain.
