Taking on the role of Spire Detectives they gathered information from primary and secondary sources before meeting in person the key players at the time of the collapse: the Dean, Architect, Engineer and a visiting Professor. Attending a formal enquiry the pupils were able to put their own questions and decide who was to blame for the collapse. The afternoon was spent with teaching staff using the morning’s stimulus to produce various types of writing to take back to school. “It was the best day ever” commented one pupil, with all others giving the day a 10/10! If your school or group of schools are interested in developing a themed day at the Cathedral for either enrichment or pupil premium children please contact me on 01243 812497 or email [email protected]. We are really interested in expanding this area of our work. Sue Poil Education Assistant S CHOOL FRIENDS I NTERVIEW NEW DEAN The Very Revd Stephen Waine officially took up his post on the 14th February. We asked the School Friends if they would like to ask him a question or two and had a fantastic response. Here are some of his replies - those we could not squeeze in can be found on the School Friends’ webpage. Did you always want to be a Dean? I have hoped that I might be a Dean for quite a while. How do you think you will look after the Cathedral? Looking after the Cathedral is a huge task and one which nobody could do alone. Fortunately there’s a large team of people here to look after it, and I am very grateful to be part of the team. Why do you think Chichester is important? Chichester is important as the place where the Cathedral has stood for over 900 years and the place where the Bishop lives. It is also an important place historically – there are Roman mosaics beneath the Cathedral. It is also important as the county town of West Sussex. Why do you think you will be good as the Dean? I have a lot of relevant experience. I have worked in a number of different churches for over 30 years and have been an Archdeacon before I came to Chichester. I enjoy cathedral worship and all the other things which happen in a cathedral. I hope to be a good Dean: I think others will have to judge whether I am. What football team do you support? Everton – I was brought up partly near Liverpool and my grandfather was a keen Everton supporter. What are your responsibilities as Dean of Chichester Cathedral? They are many and varied, from chairing meetings of the Chapter and being a member of the Bishop of Chichester’s senior staff, to preaching and representing the Cathedral in the community If you had a superpower, what would it be? I think it would be fun to be able to become invisible! What do you enjoy most about your job? Choral Evensong What do you think you could do to make the Cathedral more interactive for young people? It would be very interesting to talk to you about this. What would make it more interactive for you? (Do send your ideas to [email protected]!)

artS aWard explOre With the WaterlOO SchOOlArts Award’s mission is to support children and young people to enjoy the arts, develop creative and leadership skills and achieve a national qualification. Arts Award respects individual development and helps young people to define their creative futures.

Along with Carol Patten, professional artist and print maker, we have been working this spring with The Waterloo School on a special project in which Blue Class have been working towards Arts Award Explore level. The project has involved six workshops which have taken place between March and May. The pupils explored the textures and atmosphere of the Cathedral through arts activities including print making, clay relief sculpture and textile collage.

The experience has encouraged the children to take part in different arts activities and record what inspires them, to experience the work of artists and to present their exploration to their fellow pupils and families through a presentation and exhibition.

If you are interested in developing an Arts Award project or already deliver the Award but are interested in the Cathedral as a Supporter organisation, please get in touch - we’d love to hear from you!

art prOject updateIn July twenty pupils from Nyewood CE Junior School will be working with artist Chris Gollon. They will first visit the Cathedral to consider their theme ‘Noah’s Ark’ and see the Chris Gollon exhibition ‘Incarnation, Mary & Women from the Bible’ (running from 16th June to 16th August). Then back at school the artist will work with the pupils to create a collaborative painting. Their finished work will be on display in the Cathedral from mid-July to mid-August!

Monday 12th October 10.30am (Year 5 and above) or 1.05pm (Years R-4)You will very soon be receiving your invitations for the next School Friends’ services which this year we will organise a little differently. As usual the theme of both services is ‘Friendship’ and all schools attending participate with a contribution, whether it be a song or a drama piece, or in fact anything they can think of that relates to the theme.

Unlike previous years we will be offering the 10.30am service for year 5 and above, and the service at 1.05pm for years R-4. We have been listening closely to your comments and will be pitching each service and the following activities so they are more relevant for your pupils. The morning service for year 5 and upwards will be followed by a wonderful opportunity to experience an organ demonstration, led by Charles Harrison, Organist and Master of the Choristers. There will then be time to consider our theme with creative prayer activities. The afternoon service for years R-4 will be followed by a multitude of interactive and fun prayer activities to actively explore ‘Friendship’.

Full details will be included with your invitation. We hope very much that you can join us for this special School Friends’ celebration.

Hospitality and Event Management students joined us again this year for our second Sacred Space and Tourism Study Day. Through a series of talks and tours the students got to meet a range of people across the Cathedral who make it run smoothly every day. The day finished with a fascinating panel discussion with staff representing every Cathedral department, questioned by the students on a range of topics including how we decide what events to run here. Chichester College tutor Lianne Grogan reflected “The whole day was meticulously planned. The students gained a wealth of knowledge they can now apply to their studies. We will be coming back next year!”

neW lOcal hiStOry Study day FOr yearS 3-7!As a result of our work with the Novium Museum and three local schools we are now ready to launch NEW for 2015-16 Be an Historian for a Day! As trainee historians pupils are involved in a wide variety of activities onsite at the Cathedral as well as at the nearby Novium Museum.Treasure Hunters - A Cathedral-Sized Challenge: Pupils seek out hidden ‘treasures’ in the Cathedral using a range of historical sources, such as photographs, artefacts and eye witness accounts. Through asking questions and discussion they agree on a time line to show how the Cathedral has changed over 900 years and present their findings to the group.Changing Chichester: Pupils follow footprints through history at the Novium Museum and find evidence of people and their jobs in the past. They will develop a sense of local chronology through looking at maps and objects and by discussing continuity and change that has occurred in the city. £7.00 per pupil for both sessions (Each workshop lasts 90 minutes and can be booked as a whole day experience or separately)

Our special thanks go to the pupils and teachers at Vale First and Middle School, Dunnanie School and Jessie Younghusband School for all their help with developing and ‘road-testing’ this new study day!

BOOk a Spire day…Not just for enrichment (see page 1), our themed day has broad scope for a wide remit of learning objectives. As Spire Detectives, the children use original sources as evidence to investigate why the Cathedral Spire collapsed in 1861. Pupils can also take part in a Spire Enquiry and interview key characters! As Spire Engineers, the children explore and investigate the forces at work during the collapse and those involved in the rebuilding. As Spire Designers, pupils design and produce a plaque to commemorate the new spire. One school with a mixed class commented “the day was very well adapted to our pupils.” For further details, do visit our website or call Sue on 01243 812497

neW SchOOl FriendS viSit peregrineSWe are delighted to welcome St Christopher’s School, Hove, as our newest School Friends. Their year two pupils visited the Cathedral in May for a guided tour and gargoyle workshop, as well as a visit to the RSPB tent to learn more about the peregrine falcons nesting on the spire. Live footage of the peregrines and their three newly hatched chicks can be found in the ‘What’s On’ section of the Cathedral website - www.chichestercathedral.org.uk. The RSPB tent will be at the Cathedral until the 5th July. If you would like to visit please call the Education Department on 01243 812497.
