What began as a project to merely make an activity kit

has grown far beyond. This has become a concept for the

production of marine inspired design that understands the

    importance of sustainability.

I have already branched off into 5 areas of outputs. These

outputs all maintain similar principles and philosophies.

    Welcome to Hydro

    dont re-design . . .re-purpose and re-contextualize

I have selected cardboard tubes as my container

of choice. This will be a motif within the Hydropod

range. I want a sense of continuity, and this shape

    will provide this.

These can also be cut easily using a fixed-to-table

saw. They can also be cut by hand, or ordered to

    exact dimensions.

The tube offers maximum benefits in terms of cost,

aesthetic, practicality, further function and most

importantly it can be recycled, re-used and re-

purposed. It has great sustainable qualities.

I have a dedicated page on my blog to packaging

analysis and reviews that I have made. This is

mostly for my benefit, but there is evidence there

to support my decision making in repurposing the

    cylindrical cardboard tube:

My prior research into packaging sources and

options can be found at the following links:

Each pod has its own visual icon.

My audience is children aged 7+

and this comes with a challenge.

    To design something that is

    visually exciting, whilst clearly

    communicating the purpose.

    I sought inspiration f rom

    Scandinavian design books,

    as these often contain vector

    based work that encompasses

    beauty with simplicity.

I also designed a very baisc

recycle sticker for the base ofthe product.

I have since found an exceptional

    phosphorescent paint that comes

in 59ml bottles. I have also found a

stockist that sells each bottle at a

    The original packaging however,

Each pod will contain a single acetate

    sheet with this welcome message.

I wanted to avoid using paper, and use

a material that is more interesting.

This is one of the only less sustainable

elements to the product, but as this is

an important piece of information - it

is appropriate. This is also technically

    waterproof, and certainly something

you wouldnt be able to forget about -

    because it is unconventional.

    Acetate has a wonderful tactile

quality, and represents the window in

    the imaginary submersible the child

will be in, exploring the wonders ofthe Ocean.

When the child accesses the online

hub, they have access to the unboxing

    video (yet to make).

Then they follow the numbered steps

to get the most out of their pod, and

can continue to learn more aboutthe Ocean. The virtual hub will make

    finding fascinating information easy.

Here is a simple idea for the

online space. It should be easy

to use. I will require support in

    this stage, but ultimately the

site will act as a middle-man to

    provide good quality content in

one site. I will consider having

enter appear when the cursorrolls over the biggest droplet.

    The smaller icons take a

visitor to external sites. A way

    of making marine focussed

    content easier to locate:

I have located a supplier of these gloves that delivers within 24 hours of

ordering. The gloves are a simple product, that given a new context can make

learning about deep sea organisms more exciting and engaging. The child is in

total control and regular use of these gloves can improve dexterity and

    co-ordination.

The colour changing LED gloves provide hours of experimentation and fun for

    children.

I have already compiled video of footage that is solely focussed on marine

movement and bioluminescent light displays. These videos can be found at the

    following links:

Having already undergone a large side-project focussed on hypo-trochoid patterns

I found real enjoyment out of combining maths, order and drawing.

When making patterns, I struggled to use colour. But by looking at marine

organisms and bacteria, I discovered an inspiring pallette to work from.

The virtual hub will catalogue some inspiring examples that will be great for

    reference.

I have sourced some quality fi ne liner pens and very cheap, yet good quality mini

spirograph sets. This simple combination, supported by the visual information ofthe virtual hub makes a simple, yet thoroughly creative activity.

Instead of focussing on represnting marine life using conventional forms, these

shapes provide more opportunity for beautiful image making.

By repurposing these marine styled ice cube trays, I combined phosphorescent

pigment with clear resin to create glow in the dark sculptures. This gave me an opportunity to physically make something that wasnt a vector

graphic. They are so effective, that I have designed a new range (Glow) that is

solely marketed as self-sustaining night lights for younger children.

Marine microbial and coral patterns are beautiful and come in infinite designs.

They are perfect inspiration for detailed decoration - that requires alot of

concentration but is fantastic to start at a young age. By including a bottle of my

re-designed glow paint with 12 resin sculptures, this kit can be completed at home

    safely.

Should children wish to continue experimenting with this medium, they can find

links to tutorials on resin working and glow paint art on the virtual hub.

This is a refined version of the BioPod that I created over Summer, under the new

banner of Hydro. After producing the kit , which cost around 15, I realised that

besides the plastic container and plastic additions to the ki t, the biggest expense

    was the printed instruction booklet.

This type of kit is best demonstrated by a person, as with all the kits I have

designed. It seems in-efficient to spend hours designing instruction manuals when

one could make a demo video for people to access instantly online.

This also reduces costs because it costs nothing to upload a video - but printing an

    instruction manual...can be very costly.

With the demonstration for this kit, I can show the technique of petri dish streakingproperly. Also, I can instruct how to get the most out of the glow paint, and what

implements to use that create good textures and shapes.

I can source petri dishes from various companies, but utilize the opportunity to

order them through the Cavendish Campus for a discount.

The Biodegradable posters can be cut to

    opportunity to bring another

    product into the range.

    These can be directly marketed

as night lights for young children

or anyone who prefers having a

    calming glow at night.

    Being battery free and self

    sustaining objects, they are a

    great little product for anyone

who likes glow in the dark things,

    or loves the Ocean.

    With the added inclusion of

access to the virtual hub, the

choice is there for the user

    to seek out marine themed

    information and inspiration, made

more accessible by having aprimary base.

    This product is assembled in

    the exact same procedure as

    all other Hydropods. The only

    difference is the diameter of

the cardboard tube - at 50 mm

    instead of 100 mm.

    The original packaging was a

    combination of poor design, poor

use of materials that results in a

    product that seems cheap. The

product itself is good, and I decided

to re-design it. I didnt see the use in

the plactic cover, as it doesnt holdall the fibres in place. Many strayed

from this enclosure and as a result

were warped and damaged. Inside a

tube, with a simple rubber band they

will remain straight. And if packed

    with responsibly sourced filler the

    appliance will not get damaged.

I like to think that a consumer

is more likely to buy something

that looks good, promotes a good

    message, and serves more value

than what it says on the packaging.

That is the philosophy I believe in

with regard to design, that it should

    go above and beyond.

    colour changing coral polyp projector

This light product from IKEA retails at just 12. It has greatpotential for customization to serve a new purpose under

a marine context. I produced vector shapes modelled on

coral polyps in three ascending sizes. These can then be

cut out of vinyl and stuck around the glass sphere. Once

covered, spraying glass frosting over the sphere will block

out the translucent glass. Once the vinyl stickers are

removed the patterned areas will retain the translucence.

Any light that now comes through will be projected through

the positive pattern space created by the vinyl sticker.Adding an LED colour changing bulb inside will they give

the user control with colour settings to re-create a reef in

This section contains a concept design for a

bioluminescent bacteria powered lamp. I have

since completed a R&D project on this subject and

hope to channel that into a prototype.

The current prototype, Vibrioptic utilizes Vibrio

Fischeri bacteria suspended in liquid solution.

At present, the visual design works. The addition

of a magnetic stirrer is for exhibition purposes,

where it would be unsafe to allow members of the

public to aggitate the liquid solution.

I hope to rene some of these processes

and create a showreel. This showreel will be

projected, but not just on the oor, ceiling

or wall. I want to project these works in a

way that is more representative of their

origin. I had planned to project onto water,

but this poses an immediate risk with the

    combination of electrical appliances. Fog

is a more practical medium to project

onto, and I can synthesize fog uid from

a combination of distilled water and food

grade glycerin. Fog moves like water and

has a mysterious visual quality. It also creates

an atmosphere, something that drives my

thought process. Having an opportunity to

exhibit in a large space encourages me

to consider presenting my work in a more

exciting and engaging way. The early plans

for this set up will be provided in followingslides.

A brief note on my choices for accompanying audio:

Marine life is the epitome of diversity. Yet there is one habitiat that encompasses every

species: water. As forced as this could sound, I have always been mesmerised by the unique

music Aphex Twin has produced. Coming from one man, I made a connection to further

communicate this notion of diversity by selecting music from his available downloads, bar a few

exeptions. I have continued to accompany these animations with ambient electronica. Most

notably because that is how I imagine the Hydrosphere in my mind.

I have begun to learn how to digitally produce these geometric forms on adobe illustrator. I have

sacriced the hand produced aesthetic to speed up my collection process, effectively giving me

more opportunity to learn the program better, and produce a larger volume of studies to take

    forward and animate.

I also love making images that look as though they have come directly from a biologists

    electronic database from the 1980s.

  • 7/22/2019 Hydro & Hypo-Trochoid - Robbie Anson Duncan

    51/60

By developing my skills creating these images digitally, I have also found ways to animate them

with ease. The best thing, is that all of these complex lines look more crisp and clean when

animated, as opposed to the hand drawn hypo-trochoid data, which after screen recording and

photoshop editing, the complex lines are no longer visible.

Developing on from my hand produced and hand animated hypo-

trochoid shorts, I have sinced moved into digital territory.

I am creating a new series of animated works under the title of

Benthic Geometry. Benthic relating to the Benthic Zone, where no

light from the sun ever penetrates, and in this dark, alien World - A

huge volume of life still thrives.

This rst short is a simple test, using a series of single bacillus shapes,

and then transforming them into a canvas of life. At simplied

form, these have a microbial feel to them, and give me plenty of

opportunity to experiment with a huge array of shapes and colours.

The most recent addition to my moving

    image experimentation. Simplifying

marine forms to basic shapes and then

recording the resultant paths of these

shapes around a xed point. These

have more movement than my earlier

    Hypo-trochoid animations - and

the process I have utilized offers me

more exibility with colour, form and

    movement.

    Fog Screen Projection

This design breaks down the installation proposal to its basic forms. The smaller box on the botton

left contains the fog uid. This is propelled through a pipe by a fan. The pipe leads to the base

of a wall mounted perspex container. The fog will then collect in this area until it reaches the

top of the container. It is then sent through another pipe into another room that will have fog

spreading at ankle level on the oor.

together, along with my dissertation to give

myself maximum opportunity to produce work

that is coherent, informed and well executed.

I am considering the opportunity to utilize any

darkened space, to create my own marine

    experience.

  • 7/22/2019 Hydro & Hypo-Trochoid - Robbie Anson Duncan

    55/60

P3Now that I am growing in condence with digital

renderings, I have more time to consider if an idea

is strong or not before I make it. In preparation

for P3, I have already begun to make rough

    plans for an installation/marine experience.

Even if I choose not to go ahead with the following

ideas, I would like to share them all the same.

The following designs follow on from the

previous considerations of projecting onto fog.

  • 7/22/2019 Hydro & Hypo-Trochoid - Robbie Anson Duncan

    56/60

Supplied by the excess fog from previous installation ideas, the

Vibrioptic light will be presented in this rather grandiose manner. The

fog will create a truly wonderful atmosphere and gravitate people to

the plinth like small sh drawn to the bioluminescent lure of an angler

    sh.

If a magnetic stirrer can be borrowed from the Cavendish

laboratories, I can hook it up to an interval timer - so it aggitates the

    bioluminescent solution at regular periods.

I like to make people silly. And to enjoy themselves. But this is my wayof showing how change can be initiated by other means. Less of the
