WHAT IS SLEET?

Sleet is rain or melted snow that freezes into ice pellets before hitting the ground surface or any nearby object.

Sleet is almost similar with hail in which both type of precipitation are in forms of pellets. Sleet is formed as it falls and hits the ground while hail is formed in a cloud.

Sleets usually falls during winter while hail may fall at any time of te year.



FORMATION OF SLEET

Its form of precipitation passes through very cold layers in the atmosphere which causes them to freeze into ice pellets or grains of ice.

Besides that, it can also be formed when snow passes through warmer layers and partially melts then quickly passes through another cold layer.

EFFECT OF SLEET ON DAILY ACTIVITY

When the snow turned to sleet, it is very dangerous for people when it falling and made driving very dangerous.




The sleet is also can form ice storm when it is combining with freezing rain. It is very dangerous because it will form ice and it is destructive. This ice will coats tree limbs and power lines that making them sag and break. These will causes widespread power outages and structure damage from falling tree limbs.




The sleet also can cause the power goes out so should have some emergency supplies available.




The sleet can develops under more specialized atmospheric conditions. That causes surfaces to become very slick.

The best way to deal with sleet is when the sleet is fall and after the sleet fall, it is safe to stay inside if possible.



CURRENT ISSUE THAT HAPPEN IN ASIA (SLEET)

Since Malaysia is a warm country, the possibilities of sleet forming on the streets or low land areas is low.

However, in the high rise areas such as Mount Kinabalu and Mount Mulu, sleet does occur.

According to tourist/hikers/trip advisor, sleet occurs during the climb.
