Applications & Benefits

The 18¾", 15,000 psi Hydril Pressure Control Compact™ ram BOP delivers proven reliability for safe operation in the harshest environments. Rated for water depths to 15,000+ ft, the Compact ram has worked on the seabed continuously for one year during drilling of a 34,000-ft well. It can also add hundreds of hours of drilling time annually when configured to seal upside-down as a Subsea Stack Test Valve (SSTV) so that required pressure tests can be completed with the drill pipe in place.

This BOP has: • Successfully held full rated working pressure at 300° F for eight hours using blind/shear rams; the tested unit then completed three additional closing cycles at low and high pressure • Passed API temperature testing requirements to 350° F using blind/shear rams • Passed API temperature tests to 500° F using fixed-bore rams • All fixed-bore ram sizes on the 18-15 Compact ram are rated for this temperature • Passed API pressure tests at temperatures as low as 30° F for 5½" to 75⁄8" and 4½" to 7" variable rams • Sheared large-diameter pipe (16", 109 lb-per-ft, P-110) with closing pressure of 4,000 psi

Key Features

• Field-replaceable upper seal seats, bottom wear plates and hydraulic manifold virtually eliminate the need to move the unit to an authorized repair facility for service

• The bonnet seal carrier ring has a pressure-assisted design that enables the BOP to withstand external pressure differentials as high as 7,000 psi, equivalent to a depth of 15,000+ ft; this can occur in deep water in the event of a large pressure drop in the well bore • A single set of high-performance elastomers handles both hot and cold temperature extremes • Multiple-position lock uses a reliable, mechanical clutch to automatically lock the rams in a seal-off position • Hydraulic manifold increases operating flexibility; it can be installed on either side of the BOP with the bonnets opening on the opposite side to fit various stack configurations • Corrosion-resistant alloy is used in ring grooves, bonnet sealing area, seat bores and piston rod bore seal area for long life

The Hydril Pressure Control GK Advantage

ThepackingunitfortheGKannularBOPcanholdfull-ratedworking pressure and will close on an open hole. Before shipment,eachpackingunitisfactorytestedinaBOP–to50% of working pressure on open hole and 100% on pipe. The GK provides longer life when using genuine Hydril Pressure Control packing units, as shown in repeated testing.

When the GK closes, the piston moves up, driving the elastomer and inserts inward where they quickly reach a fixed position and form a steel ring that prevents the rubber from moving upward under wellbore pressure. After the ring is formed, feedable elastomer continues to flow inward around the inserts to create a positive seal on the drill string or open hole. Because the elastomer is primarily in compression, it resists tears, cuts and abrasions.

ThepackingunitfortheGXannularBOPcanholdfull-rated workingpressureaftermoreclosingcyclesandstrippingthan any other unit available. The GX produces extra uptime from a significantly larger reservoir of engineered elastomer, andaBOPdesignthatpreciselycontrolsthepositionofunique, flanged steel inserts.

When the GX closes, the packing unit rubber drives the inserts inward,wheretheyquicklyreachafixedpositionandformasteelringthatpreventstheelastomerfromextrudingupwardunderwellborepressure.Aftertheringisformed,feedableelastomercontinuestoflowinwardaroundtheinsertstocreate

Built for industrial and production applications, the non-wetted shell design reduces maintenance requirements while accommodating corrosive process liquids. Applications & Benefits

Hydril Pressure Control PASAFE™ pulsation dampeners extend pump life and enhance piping system performance by controlling pressure and flow pulsations. Virtually maintenance-free and available in three specialized flow-through designs, PASAFE discharge dampeners and suction stabilizers are engineered specifically to handle abrasive, corrosive, high-temperature and high-pressure fluids in the most extreme environments.

Hydril Pressure Control R-PASAFE dampeners are ideal for high-temperature or chemical applications – including industrial and oil and gas drilling applications – that can cause compatibility problems with elastomers. The flow-through design of every C-PASAFE unit effectively reduces flow and acceleration-induced pulsations in reverse-osmosis applications. S-PASAFE combination units, with both large liquid volume and gas volume, are particularly well suited for slurry and mine dewatering applications.

They seal the annulus around drill pipe, casing or tubing; or they can shear the drill string.

Blind rams can be provided on all our BOP models, while shear rams may require larger than standard operator size.

Blind ram Our blind rams have the ability to completely shut off an openholewhileholdingfull-ratedpressureat350°F.

Blind shear Our blind shear rams will completely shut off the well after they have completed the shear. They will hold the full rated pressureandareratedperAPIstandardsto350°F.Theserams are recommended for all applications using 95⁄8" diameter pipe and below.

Casing shearUnlike blind shears, casing shears do not have sealing capability. However, their advantage is the capability to shear larger pipes – almost any round pipe that will fit through the BOP bore can be sheared by the Hydril Pressure Controlcasingshearram.

Fixed boreOurHydrilPressureControlfixedboreramshavetheabilityto seal on any API casing size, drill pipe or tubular.

Wireline shear The wireline shear is a special type of blind shear ram. Its distinctive design keeps the upper and lower blades in very close proximity to each other, allowing the unit to shear small cables along with the pipe.

OurHydrilPressureControlvariablerams(HVRs)aredesigned to securely and reliably close and seal on a wide range of pipe sizes.

Universal seal-offTheHVRhasauniversalseal-offfeaturethatisespeciallyuseful on a drill string that does not have a constant diameter over its length or when multiple diameters of drill pipe are used. Two BOPs with variable rams can be used on a tapered string to provide a backup for all drill-pipe sizes. This application eliminates having one pipe ram for small diameter pipe and one for large diameter pipe.

If a BOP stack is assembled with a blind or blind shear ram andtwosetsofHVRs,theHVRswillsealovertheBOP’scomplete range providing the backup seal-off capability neededonataperedstring.OurHydrilPressureControlvariable ram is therefore ideally suited to subsea use by expanding the seal-off capability of each cavity within a BOP.

Large volume of feedable rubberThe ram-block upper seal provides a large volume of feedable rubber to deliver a long and dependable service life.

Excellent compatibilityAllHydrilPressureControlramshaveexcellentfunctionalitywith our proven automatic multiple position locking (MPL) mechanism and the manual lock model. The automatic MPL ensures a positive mechanical lock at all positions of the variable ram. This means that the MPL automatically compensates as packer position changes as a result of wear over time, or if the ram blocks are changed to accommodate a different pipe size.

Tested in the lab. Proven in the field.ThefunctionalreliabilityofourHydrilPressureControlrams has been proven by extensive testing in the lab and commercial use on wells operated around the world. Lab testing conducted per API 16A procedures includes: fatigue testing that has simulated over 1.5 years of service by numerous cyclic operations, pressure tests of the ram packers, and temperature testing to determine the high and low temperature limits of our standard packers.
