A vehicle is a hybrid if it utilizes more than one form of onboard energy to achieve propulsion. That means a hybrid will have a traditional internal-combustion engine and a fuel tank, as well as one or more electric motors and a battery pack.

What is a Hybrid car?

Electric cars can run without using any gasoline at all! Instead of filling the cars with fuel, you recharge these cars by plugging them in to an electrical outlet.

Sometimes they’re also called “plug-in electric cars” or “cars with cords.”

What is an Electric car?

Electric and hybrid cars both use technology that is designed to decrease the use of gasoline fuel for powering car engines. Electric cars are totally electric, meaning that they must be plugged in and charged, and that the range of the car is only as far as the charge. Hybrid cars use a mixture of gas and electric power to create a gas efficient partially electric car with a less limited range. Some hybrid car owners have modified their cars further, to run entirely on electricity except in emergency situations, in which case the drivers use gasoline power.

The number one advantage of these types of cars is that they are environmentally friendly!

It runs cleaner, conserves energy, and cuts fuel consumption.

It has lower carbon dioxide emissions and releases less exhaust into the air.

They have lower fossil fuel dependence. This reduces the dependence on foreign oil, lowering gas prices domestically.

They have better gas mileage than the average traditional gasoline powered vehicle.

Benefits of Hybrid/ Electric Cars

Page 8: Hybrid electric cars

These types of cars are built from lighter materials which means less energy is required to run them.

They have a regenerative braking system. This means each time you apply the brake while driving a hybrid vehicle, you charge your battery a little. An internal mechanism kicks in that captures the energy released and uses it to charge the battery.

Using electric/hybrid cars also diminishes the amount of times you have to go fill up your car with gas.

The number one disadvantage is the price of these cars. Hybrid cars can burn a hole in your pocket. They are comparatively more expensive than a regular petrol car and can cost $5,000to $10,000 more than a standard version. However, that extra amount can be offset with lower running cost and tax exemptions.

They also have higher maintenance costs. Hybrid vehicles cost more to repair because of the complexity of the dual compulsion system used. Not all mechanics are trained or equipped to work on hybrid vehicles and repair bills may be larger than with standard vehicles.

Disadvantages of Hybrid/Electric Cars

Page 10: Hybrid electric cars

Hybrid cars have less power. Hybrid cars have a twin powered engine. The gasoline engine, which is primary source of power, is much smaller as compared to what you get in single engine powered car and the electric motor, which is low in power. The combined power of both is often less than that of gas powered engine. It is therefore suited for city driving and not for speed and acceleration.

With Electric cars, there is a long refueling time. It can take three to six hours to recharge a vehicle.

Despite these disadvantages, the benefits that save the environment make it worthwhile.
