HOMEWORK SET #4 Why You Should Care Not everything in this world is nice, neat, and square. Most commercial products have interesting curves and contours that make them aesthetically appealing (think Apple products). Left to our own devices, we engineers tend to make things bulky and blocky, which is why it’s helpful to take some art classes (or at least make friends with artists). We’re going to work with an appealing design from Ikea for a simple, 2-shelf coffee table, and use it to get some experience designing objects with appealing shapes and common fasteners. Spend some quality time on this homework, as the CAD model that you’re building will be used for the next 3 homework assignments. Assignment: 1. Reverse Engineer the Ikea Coffee Table. The Ikea PS2012 Coffee Table (Figure 1) is a simple, easy-to-assemble unit made from aluminum sheet and common fasteners. Several assembled PS2012 Coffee Tables are in Design Studio Room 109, and there are also units that are still packaged in their original boxes. All materials should stay in the Design Studio Room 109 and be left in their original condition. Figure 1: The Ikea PS2012 Coffee Table. MEEG202 J. Buckley, 2015

HOMEWORK SET #4

Why You Should Care

Not everything in this world is nice, neat, and square. Most commercial products have interesting curves and contours that make them aesthetically appealing (think Apple products). Left to our own devices, we engineers tend to make things bulky and blocky, which is why its helpful to take some art classes (or at least make friends with artists). Were going to work with an appealing design from Ikea for a simple, 2-shelf coffee table, and use it to get some experience designing objects with appealing shapes and common fasteners. Spend some quality time on this homework, as the CAD model that youre building will be used for the next 3 homework assignments.

Assignment:

Create a 3-D model of Ikea PS2012 Coffee Table. Make the model to-scale. Include all components and fasters. You should import fasteners and casters rather than model them from scratch.

DeliverablesCreate assembly drawings with all parts and fasteners. Turn in assembly and parts drawings as a complete package in Sakai.
