description

Students In Action is a national youth volunteer leadership, recognition and reward program, designed to pass the tradition of service on to the next generation. Co-developed by Jefferson Awards for Public Service and Deloitte, it is now in over 250 High Schools. Each spring, Student Leaders from the participating schools compete in regional competitions. They are asked to report on the implementation of the program, and the impact they've had, both in their schools and within their communities.

• We used the National Honor Society members as a ground base for nominations

• We distributed nomination forms to teachers, counselors, and administrators at our school

• There is not a systemic reporting method, yet; however, we estimate the number of student volunteer hours as approximately

10,000 hours 1,475 students times 5 hours, plus more hours for the motivated!

• To expand the SIA in Savannah, we have contacted Beth Sasser of Savannah Christian Preparatory School

• Our team is actively pursuing SCPS as a potential member of the Students in Action program

• When SCPS is recruited, we plan to lend assistance to the school to help give them an understanding of the Jefferson Awards and the Students in Action Leadership program for increasing volunteerism.

At Herschel V. Jenkins, since our initial start, vast improvements have been made:

• We created a Students in Action team at the beginning of October 2009

• We implemented projects such as the NIH Recycling Project

• We attended and put into practice project strategies from Students in Action Leadership Conference held in Charleston, SC, during October 2009

• We developed a nomination process to recognize our peers who do outstanding volunteer work

• We partnered with two local civic organizations, the Southside Rotary and the Pilot Club of Chatham County, and we will partner with our school’s Future Educators Association in the Dictionary Project. We will distribute dictionaries to every third grade student at Juliette Low Elementary School.
