Welcome to the New Stadium for Holyhead Hotspurs fifth successive league and cup home

fixture on the bounce, while similar sentiments go to the players, officials and supporters of

Mid-Wales club Guilsfield for this Huws Gray Alliance league cup first round tie.

Our last game in this cup competition was by coincidence against this afternoon’s visitors on

the final day of February this year (2014/15 season) in a semi-final tie at the home of the

Guils when Hotspur went down by the end goal in three. Mel McGinness gave us an early

lead after seven minutes only for prolific goal scorer Danny Barton to draw his side level on

the stroke of half time with a hotly distributed penalty, and the same marksman converted

another spot kick late on to take his team into the final.

Our first H.G.A league fixture here in August last year resulted in a 2-2 draw after we led 2-0

with goals from Ryan Jones (5) and Dale Murphy (55). However, Campbell’s men let the lead

slip and Rhydian Morris (82) and Gareth Jones with a late, late penalty (90+2) gave the

visitors a share of the spoils.

In the return fixture a couple of weeks before Christmas, we suffered a disappointing 3-0

defeat. Chris Cathrall put the Guils one up on twenty and Danny Dumbarton increased the

lead from the spot on forty four. Just before the end the hosts were awarded another pen

and you know who added a third! So, last season’s three pen counters against the todays

visitors saw them convert five spot kicks with Danny Dumbarton notching up four!

One feels it is time the tables were turned in our favour against a side who have always

given us a good contest season after season since we entered the H.G.A back in the late

90’s, so let’s make that today and enter the next round.

Tuesday evening turned out to be one of those memorable occasions in our first venture

into the ‘Word Cup’ against Welsh Premier newcomers Llandudno when two great strikes

from Mike Edwards within three minutes (17+20) proved enough to win the tie, it was a

superb team performance and although on the back food for most of the second half having

to withstand considerable pressure held out and actually reduced the seasiders to very few

clear cut opportunities while always looking capable on the break.

The visitors had started the stronger side but Hotspur soon got into their stride and on 17

took the lead in fine style, Mike Kelly played in Damian Ketley to the by-line who did really

well to pill the ball back inside his defender to the lurking Mike Edwards who played his shot

perfectly beyond keeper Dave Roberts. Three minutes later, Mike Kelly did line work on the

right delivering a deep cross to Mike Edwards on a far side to the left of goal who beat his

man and send an unstoppable drive into the top right hand corner much to the delight of

the near 200 crowd.

The visitors responded but we well deserved out two goal lead at the break and as

mentioned were under the cosh in the second half but still had to be watched on the break.

However, keeper Carl Jones and his defenders had a ‘we shall not pass mentality’ to hold

out for a memorable victory and a passage into the next round of our new cup venture.

After five home games on the trot we make the long journey to the heart of Mid-Wales

against Rhayader Town next Saturday back in league action while our next home game is

due on Saturday 26th of September against Prestatyn Town who were relegated from the

Welsh Premier League at the end of last season. Should be a good contest with K.O at 2.30.

Wales have still not quite made Euro 16 after the draw with Israel but we should as least

make it in October either against Bosnia or Andorra with only a point needed. It was good

to receive a very positive letter about Holyhead Hotspur last week following some visiting

supporter’s experiences. Secretary/Treasurer Richard Parry in particular receiving praise for

his welcome via the turnstiles. No doubt there may have been a different response at

another part of the ground! Seriously however, this is good news that we must be doing

something right. Enjoy the game, and keep the faith.

EDWARDS DOUBLE STUNS TUDNO!

A Mike Edwards brace within three minutes (17 & 20) proved enough for HGA Alliance Holyhead

Hotspur to see off Welsh Premier League newcomers Llandudno in the first round of the Word Cup

at the New Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Although Edwards was the double salvo hero and match winner Campbell Harrison’s men gave a

superb all round team performance and although on the back foot for almost all the second period

having to withstand almost constant pressure held out to actually reduce the seasiders to very few

clear cut chances while always looking capable on the break themselves.

The visitors had started the stronger Liam Dawson providing difficult to hold down the left and his

shot was not far away on three and the same player skipped around keeper Carl Jones to the by-line

but put his effort into the side net. However, Hotspur began to get their game going causing

problems down the right in particular and on seventeen took the lead. Mike Kelly played in Damian

Ketley who almost to the by-line did really well to pull the ball back inside his defender to the lurking

Mike Edwards who just inside the box placed his shot perfectly beyond keeper Dave Roberts. Three

minutes later Mike Kelly involved again did fine work down the right delivering a deep cross to the

left of goal to Edwards who beat his man and sent an unstoppable drive into the top right hand

corner much to the delight of the near 200 crowd.

The shell shocked visitors responded and Marc Williams looked in, but poor control let him down on

twenty five. The same player shot straight at Jones but Hotspur still threatened themselves and

Ketley shot over on the half hour. Both sides had spells of danger but half time Hotspur well

deserved their two goal advantage.

The visitors meant business the start of the second stanza and Carl Jones had to gather at the second

attempt from Danny Taylor while a left wing low cross on forty eight reached the unmarked sub Alan

Bull with a goal gaping but took his eye off the ball and the chance was gone.

Llandudno continued to push forward in a game played at a high tempo throughout, but on fifty four

Hotspur broke down the right and Kelly’s cross found Ketley who dragged his shot wide. Williams

was prominent for Tudno who were pressing by the minute but Holyhead were in resilient mood and

on seventy three from another break out Ketley up on his own was again close. On seventy six

Hotspur had their biggest scare yet when from a corner on the right a shot came in which beat Jones

for once but Brendun Hogan was perfectly positioned to hack off the line and the danger was

averted. Then the visitors had a free kick by James Joyce but somehow nobody connected when it

only needed a touch at the far post.

Tudno were now camped in Hotspur territory but keeper Carl Jones and his defenders had that they

shall not pass ‘mentality’ and held firm for a memorable victory and a passage into the next round of

Originating from an Angel !

The way that football clubs are formed has always been a fascinating aspect of the game and it is not always a well

known fact that many who have graced the higher echolons owe their inception to the church. The likes of Everton,

Manchester City, Birmingham City, Aston Villa and Fulham to name but a few all have religious backgrounds which

led to their foundation in the latter stakes of the 19th Century via Sunday schools and the various connections to the

cloth.

While the birth and embryo stages of Holyhead Hotspur football club will not have any direct similarities to the

‘above’ there is one obvious link, an angel albeit the local public house namely ‘The Angel’.

In 1990 Carl Taylor who had broken away from Holyhead Town (the previous ‘flagship’ club of the town over many

decades) gathered together players and colleagues in the hope of starting something new! The Angel was to play a

prominent part as a meeting place for the group as they initially played in friendly seven a side games several at Cae

Bog a regular playing field at Kingsland within close proximity of the Angel and in use over many decades.

Taylor along with the likes of brother Martin, Sean Chambers, Chris ‘Wally’ Williams, Les Williams, Paul Maguire,

Todds Thomas were all heavily involved as the friends won all their matches at a canter and on the back of this

decided to form an ‘official’ club to hopefully join the Anglesey league.

As Angel landlord Geoff Owen (uncle of programme editor Jonathan Taylor) was perhaps the inevitable choice as the

first Chairman while Gary ‘Scouse’ Williams was to be Manager. There was one important item still missing

however, the naming of the new Club! As several names were mooted it was decided to draw the winner out of a

hat and Sean Chambers came up with the winning line so to speak with Holyhead ‘Hotspur’ simply because he

supported Tottenham Hotspur (like his dad Ken who would later become President) which was agreed upon,

adopted and also that it had a good buzz to it. This similar to a ‘bee and wasp’ was to be the logo/badge and it first

saw the light of day (or sting in the tail/tale) when Sean Chambers made the first ever attempt of a drawing in Carl

Taylor’s kitchen having been adapted from a similar like insect at the top of a local community news sheet!

The rest is of course history and those involved (with apologies for any glaring omissions) in those pioneering days in

August 1990 could never have envisaged that their new team would blossom into such an established and respected

Holyhead Hotspur Football Club, developing into one of the leading sides in the Welsh pyramid system over the next

25 years. This no doubt prompt’s the well known phrase from little acorns to big oak trees or should that be from

little insects!

The initial years in the Anglesey league would inevitably bring teething problems including the venues, but once on a

firm footing and the league won for a second time in 1995/96 things really took off when the Gwynedd league was

claimed the following campaign, and the rapid rise continued the very next season 1997/98 when that exiting and

potent team racked up over a hundred goals and captured the Welsh Alliance title by a massive sixteen points.

Since 1998/99 Hotspur have graced the Huws Gray Alliance for all but two of the seasons up to the present time and

even those due to the restructuring of the Welsh pyramid. In a very brief summary of the Club history like this it is

not wise to ‘name drop’ for fear of leaving out important people who in their various capacities have contributed on

a massive scale to the development of this football club to which we are all greatly indebted on and off the field

while also paying tribute to the grass roots and youth development side of the club which does so much to help the

local community.

To finish as we started on a religious theme it must have been ‘divine intervention’ which prompted the birth of

Holyhead Hotspur Football Club from such small beginnings. A minor miracle one might say, turning into a very big

one.

SECRETARY NOTES

Welcome everyone to the Stadium for todays’s Huws Gray league cup round one match and a

special welcome to everyone connected with Guilsfield FC. They are doing well so far this

season and have always been tough opposition. I envy them the fact that they have such a

wide area to ‘pull players’ from, even from across the border. In comparison to us who have

to rely on our youth development and players who are prepared to work hard and travel.

There are players out there good enough for us but they would rather play with their mates in

the local village team. Shame really that they lack the ambition to use their skills to best

advantage.

Well we shocked a few people last Tuesday night with a cracking win over MBi Llandudno

2 - 0. We were the better team on the night but they pressed us hard in the second half when

for some reason we seemed to defend deep. One or two of their players were looking for

‘Oscars’ I think with their diving and simulation but referee Lee Evans was not impressed

and did not book them either strange!! There was one decision that Lee made though which

annoyed me, and it was in relation to that incident, which you might remember, when two

balls came on the field. One from across the field from the dug out and one from the main

stand. One ball was kicked for some reason to our keeper who kicked it to the dug out, and

Lee came over and booked Carl for wasting time. A shocking decision which brought no

credit on Lee at all. It’s useless trying to talk to ‘high and mighty’ people.

I mentioned earlier that Welsh Premier clubs have an Academy structure. They get many

thousands of pounds from UEFA to support their youth and Academies, so they have a great

advantage over clubs like us at the lower level. We do well to be honest to support the eleven

junior/youth teams we have, starting at aged 6. It’s hard work but we all value the

commitment of the Youth Development committee, the coaches and the parents who work so

hard for this club and this community.

We have a new management team for the reserves. Manager is Andy Batsford and his

assistant John Batson. The team is in the new Welsh Alliance Reserve League and will be an

interesting new venture for us having spent so many years in the Gwynedd League. The team

will be composed very much of younger players with some ‘old heads’. They played their

first match in the new Welsh Alliance reserve league a week last Thursday and went down 1 -

2 to Llanrug United reserves. They are away at Blaenau Ffestiniog today, home to Trearddur

Bay on Wednesday the 16th, home to Llanberis on the 19th

and away at Porthmadog on the

24th

. There may be an away match on Saturday 26th

we await info on that.

Gareth Davies and daughter Sarah a teacher at the local High school, organized a competition

for the Club’s recent 25th

Anniversary. A new Club Anniversary badge has been made and

they and many other ‘goodies’ are on sale in the new Club shop. Gareth is there before the

match and the Club shop is also open at half time. Why not give it a visit.

Campbell is looking to strengthen the squad as we have recently lost Mel, Dan and Chris

Saxon. He has brought in Keiran Hilditch from Abergele Town and now we welcome a

centre back Daniel Gwynne from Porthmadog. There may be another extra face or two within

the next few weeks. With so many new players in the squad (Brendun, Jamie, Dewi, Ryan) I

think to be fair it will take a little time for there to be a better understanding amongst the

players. Points this season are going to be hard earned and every match will be a stern test as

we have already found out in the first five matches.

Congratulations to Paul Pritchard the Caernarfon keeper who has recently been appointed as

Goalkeeper Coach to the Youth at Sheffield United. Belated congratulations also to our Tony

Roberts who has moved from Arsenal (where he was Goalkeeper coach) to Swansea City FC.

Good luck to both as they further their careers, and I hope we will see them from time to

time. Whilst talking of goalkeeper coaches it’s only right to mention our own Mervyn

Williams who spends a great deal of time coaching all our young keepers. He does it from the

goodness of his heart. Thanks Mervyn.

We are looking forward now to the second round of the FAW ‘Word Cup’. In other matches

that night Caernarfon had a good win at Bangor and Denbigh Town at Rhyl, so the HGA

clubs on the whole did rather well. I hope we draw a ‘big club’ so we can have a bumper

evening and great support. We had 191 at the MBi Llandudno match but when you consider

the thousands that live in and around Holyhead its not a great number is it.

The FAW are concerned about the level of ‘betting’ there is on matches (not on ours -

£600,000 per week on WPL) They have instructed all Level 1 and 2 clubs to attend a session

at Bangor FC on Tuesday 29th

September. This is compulsory for all first team players,

managers and club officials. We have also received the new criteria for membership of level

two FAW football (Huws Gray and Welsh League South). We will meet the criteria.

I don’t know how often we will see Ryan Booth now as he has taken up a Radiographer

position at a Shrewsbury hospital before going into the Army.

We wish Ryan well in his chosen career and hope to see him sometimes

Shop/Match Day office and the Club Store/Fitness Room. Some hard work by Mike Taylor

and others has transformed it to what you now see, thanks to them for their hard work. I have

Well let’s hope we continue to get the season off to a reasonable start, and the lads will need

all the encouragement you can give them especially today against strong opposition. It’s

going to be one hell of a season with some difficult matches ahead, not least today.

HOLYHEAD HOTSPUR FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY

Holyhead is a town with a rich footballing tradition, from Holyhead F.C. in the late 1800’s and in the early 1900’s being represented by teams as diverse as Holyhead Liberals and Holyhead Locos. Holyhead’s ‘purple patch’ was in the 1950’s and 1960’s when the famous Harbourmen rode high on the stage of North Wales football from their base at Cae Mwd on Turkeyshore Road. In the 70’s and 80’s Holyhead was represented by Mountain Rangers and Holyhead United Juniors who secured Welsh League status. Holyhead Hotspur F.C. was founded in 1990, when several prominent people involved in local football formed the Club. At the time of its formation there were four other local Clubs in the town operating in different leagues of the North Wales Coast Football Association. By 1997, with the success of Hotspur, all the Clubs amalgamated and Holyhead Hotspur F.C. became the modern day successor to the ‘Harbourmen’ of years ago, and formed a senior team and a reserve team and Youth teams called Holyhead Hotspur Peibio in recognition of their past association with Peibio and the great work done by many people over the years in fostering youth football at Peibio. In 2009 ‘Clwb Cybi’ a special needs team joined us and this underlines the Club’s desire to be an ‘all inclusive football club’ within our community. The Club has enjoyed much success over the years. In successive seasons 1995/6, 1996/7, 1997/8 winning the Anglesey League, Gwynedd League and Welsh Alliance League Championships, and this was the focus which resulted in the amalgamation of all the Holyhead Clubs at that time. The season 1998/9 saw the reserve team promoted to the Gwynedd League and the senior team promoted to the Huws Gray Alliance League. The Huws Gray Alliance League is North Wales and Mid Wales’s feeder league to the Welsh Premier League. The senior side had over a period of time consolidated its position in the Huws Gray Alliance League, and the reserves had likewise done so in the Gwynedd League, culminating in both teams finishing runners – up in their respective leagues, their highest ever final league positions at the end of the 2008/2009 campaign, as well as the first team finishing as losing finalists in the Huws Gray Alliance league cup. This occurred twice each time losing out to Bala Town FC in the final. However despite a more than creditable 8th position in season 2009/10 after a very poor start, the Club was relegated to the Welsh Alliance Division 1. This was because the Welsh Premier League decided to reduce its membership for season 2010/11 from eighteen to twelve teams. This was a great disappointment to us, and we had to strive to gain our rightful place in the Huws Gray Alliance League (which is tier 2 of Welsh Football) which we did as League champions in the season 2011/12, also winning both the Cookson and Barritt Cup competitions and losing finalists in the Football Association of Wales Welsh Trophy competition. This next season our reserves will be competing in the newly formed Welsh Alliance Reserve League. The management of the reserves are looking forward to this new challenge. The League is divided into two divisions Gwynedd and Clwyd. Firstly each club will play the others in their respective division, and then afterwards two new divisions will be created by combining the top and bottom sections of both areas. Mike has been a great servant and still has much to offer as a left sided

defender or attacking midfielder. A versatile player and strong runner

with the ball.

Nick Clark MID

Nick made several appearances for the first team last term and always

acquitted himself well. Another left sided player who is hugely

competitive and committed to the cause.

Mike Kelly MID

‘Chedz’ can operate anywhere across the midfield and is a gifted player

who makes the ball do the work. He is quick to spot the telling ‘through

ball’ opportunity for the strikers to latch on to.

Ryan Jones MID

A great talent who has deserved his first team place as a right sided

pacey winger with a great cross. Represented Wales at Estonia last

season.

Kenleigh Owen DEF MID

KC came back to us after 2 seasons with Oldham Athletic. Pace and

trickery in abundance as well as an eye for goal even when he is

playing as a left sided defender. Has made some amazing runs to

score some spectacular goals.

Brendun Hogan DEF MID

A new signing this season from Glantraeth FC. Brendun seems a very

assured player on the ball and played with many of our squad at the

recent ‘Island Games’ at Jersey.

Ryan Booth MID

A new signing from Trearddur Bay FC who scored 24 goals for them

last season, who wants to try his hand at a more senior level. A good

talker on the field and a willing and powerful runner. Good

distribution and vision and a valuable new member of the squad.

Dewi Thomas MID

After a couple of seasons away at Llanerchymedd Dewi has returned

to us and fills that important holding midfield position. A quality and

imposing player who never seems under any pressure and hardly

wastes any possession. Welsh U19 College’s International.

Jason Owen DEF MID

Strong and fearless Jason can operate at the back or midfield. A

hugely competitive and talented player who provides extra ‘steel’ to

the back line.

Damian Ketley ATT

Transferred to us from Colwyn Bay this talented and strong striker with

great awareness and touch will add much to the existing strike force of

the club.

Phil Williams DEF MID

Joined us last season and delighted to see that he has signed again. A

very versatile player who can play in most positions, this makes Phil a

very valuable member of the team.

Kieran only 17 and has adapted well into senior football a regular with

defender and knows the lads well after playing with most of the lads

Trearddur Bay. Has a good goalscoring record and has pace.

Now in his third season as manager who guided us to a 5th position

last term. Welsh Premier experience as a player and coach with

Porthmadog FC and Cemaes Bay FC. He is Deputy Head of St Gerard’s

school at Bangor.

Darren Garmey Assistant Manager

Campbell appointed former Hotspur midfielder Daz as his assistant in

season 2012/3. In the previous season he was joint manager/player

for the reserves and helped guide them to silverware in the Bobby

Owen Memorial Shield.

Mervyn Williams Physio / GK Coach

Vastly experienced and highly respected coach and physio. Long

standing friend and member of Campbell’s ‘boot-room’. Spends a lot

of time, for which we are very grateful, coaching the young keepers in

our Youth Development teams.

GUILSFIELD PEN PICS

Danny Barton - Player/ Manager - Danny is well known in Mid Wales circles as a prolific

striker. He brings a wealth of experience to the squad having played in the Welsh Premiership

with Newtown, TNS and Rhyl. Danny continues as Assistant Manager this season and leads the

Guilsfield front-line. He was awarded both the League's Top Scorer and League's Player of the

Season in 2013/14. In his 4t season with the club, Danny now steps up to take his first managerial

role.

Bernie Jones – Coach - Bernie is a highly respected coach. He played for both Welshpool and

Caersws in the League Of Wales as a disciplined defender. Bernie is very well regarded in Mid

Wales football circles. Bernie is a fitness fanatic who relishes the Snowdon Run challenge each

summer!

Dave Littleford - Dependable Dave is a fine shot stopper who is a steady performer between the

posts for Guilsfield. He has represented England youth sides in his schoolboy days. Dave is one of

our longest serving players and is one of the most consistent keepers in the the league and had a

great season in 2014/15.

James Henderson - Hendo is a typical Central Defender, but with bags of pace who enjoys

playing the ball out from the back. This is loyal and consistent James' 8th season with the Guils. A

respected member of the squad and a good team man. Hendo was named Man of the Match in last

season's Huws Gray Cup Final.

Jack Richards - Jack arrived at Guilsfield last season for his first taste of senior football from the

Shrewsbury Town youth setup. A fine left footed defender/midfielder who looks to have a bright

future. Jack made a number of starts last season and this has helped him to develop into a strong

player in the Huws Gray Alliance.

Chris Cathrall - Chris is a consistent, combative and super-fit performer who can operate at wing

back or in the centre of the park. This is Chris' 4th season at the Guils after a spell with Ellesmere

Rangers. Cats possesses a lethal long throw and has also scored some important goals for us last

season.

Callum Bromley -Callum returned to the Guils in February 2013 after a couple of seasons with

Shawbury Utd. Callum performed consistently last season and is a dependable defender with over

20 appearances last year.

Gareth Jones - A village lad who is an all-action midfielder with a great engine. Gareth has

captained Wales Schoolboys at U-18 level and was in the Wales U-16 side that finished Runners

Up in the Victory Shield. His former clubs include Welshpool Town and UWIC. Gareth loves to

make deep runs into the box. Gareth was the Supporters Player of the Year last season.

Andy Ford - Andy can play at the centre of the defence or in midfield, so again his flexibility will

be useful during the season. A very committed, consistent and combative performer who gives a

great deal of bite to the midfield. Andy is in his 4th season with the Red and Blacks.

Mark Davies - Village lad Mark has played for Guilsfield through the junior ranks to the first

team. A left footed defender who became the first member of the TNS academy side to sign

professional forms during the summer of 2006. Mark rejoined his home village in November 2009

after a spell coaching in the USA.Previously, Mark made 44 Welsh Premier appearances in total

for TNS, Caersws and Newtown. Mark runs his own fitness company.

Nathan Leonard - Another busy midfielder with a good engine. Lenny quietly goes about his

work in the middle of the park but is an important member of the club. Nathan is the son of ex-

Shrewsbury Town and Cardiff City defender Carleton Leonard. Lenny rejoined the Guils in the

Summer of 2012 from Ellesmere Rangers. Nathan is respected in the squad and his contribution

will be important this season.

Sean Jones - Sean's second season after joining us from Market Drayton Town. "Leggsy" came

through the TNS system and has slotted in really well here at Guilsfield. Reads the game well and

covers in front of the back four very effectively.

Aaron Edwards - Signed from Penycae last season. Aaron has always impressed against

Guilsfield in the past so he is a very good addition to our squad. A versatile and strong performer

at this level who gives us extra options in attack.

Adam Jenkins - Adam is a nimble forward with good feet. He spent a couple of seasons with

Caersws before having a stint of coaching in America. Adam will be looking to impress in his first

full season at Guilsfield after arriving here before Christmas last season.

Rhydian Morris - Rhydian's second season at Cymru Alliance following a successful spell with

Berriew in the Spar Mid Wales League. Rhyds began last season really well and got amongst the

goals with his all action and combative style. Left the club to spend last winter as a ski instructor

in France.

Peter Rees - Peter joins us from Spar Mid Wales side Carno, where he impressed over the last

few seasons." Pistol Pete" has good movement and quick feet and will be another welcome

addition to the forward options at Guilsfield.

Jack Harris - Jack returns to the Guils after a season with Welshpool Town. Jack is attack

minded and knows where the goal is.

Sam Litchfield - Sam is a new signing and steps up to this level from Shropshire football.

Previously with St. Martins, Sam has had a very good pre-season with us. He can operate

effectively in the centre of defence or in midfield.

Ashley Roberts - Ash comes to us from Penycae. He has also turned out for Rhydymwyn at this

level. Ash will provide competition for the keeper's jersey. An agile keeper who communicates

well from the back.

GUILSFIELD CLUB HISTORY

Football has been played in Guilsfield since the early part of 1930's but little is known of the

teams of that era. A team was known to have played in the village at the end of World War 2. One

game played was their version of an international when they played the local Italian prisoner of

war camp side. One player of note from the early 50's was Wyn Nicholls who later played for

Newtown, Welshpool and gained Welsh Caps at under 18 level, he later signed professional forms

for Wrexham.

The present club was formed on August 6th 1957. Mr.Bill Laker and several other men folk of the

village got together to form a local side, with seven or eight local lads playing for surrounding

villages it was felt that the village needed to form a team of its own. The club entered the

Montgomeryshire Amateur League and matches during this early period were played on local

farmer's fields and during the summer months the committee and players would help the farmer

with his harvest to cover the ground rent for the season.

During the mid sixties the village doubled in size and the local Community Centre was built with

room to accommodate a football pitch, which is where the club plays today. Throughout the 60's,

70's and 80's the team was almost all local players of a good standard but honours eluded the club

except for the occasional runners-up in cup finals.

At the beginning of the 90's a grandstand was built and the dressing rooms refurbished at a total

cost of £34,000. By now the team was starting to show potential and the 1994/1995 season saw

the club win the Montgomeryshire Amateur League, First Division. The club took advantage of

the Welsh F.A. pyramid system, was promoted to the Mid Wales League and duly finished in a

creditable 4th spot in our first season. The 2000/2001 Spar Mid Wales League campaign was

brought to a premature conclusion following the foot and mouth crisis that broke out in mid

February 2001. At the time of abandonment we were well placed in the league and fighting for

promotion to the Cymru Alliance League. As a result of the merger of two existing Cymru

Alliance League clubs (Llangefni Town and Glantraeth) an extra promotion slot was available and

our application to join the league for 2001/2002 was accepted.

In our first two seasons we finished in 15th place. It was during our second season that Mike

Barton was appointed as manager. Mike soon got to grips with the standard of football in the

league and began to strengthen the side. This rebuilding led to Guilsfield finishing in sixth

position in 2003/04.

The next league campaign saw us occupying a top half position throughout the campaign finally

finishing in seventh spot. Our highest ever league position came four seasons ago and culminated

with a 4-0 victory against Tywyn/Bryncrug in the Central Wales Challenge Cup Final. The

2006/07 season saw Guilsfield in a mid-table slot but disappointingly unable to retain the Central

Wales Cup, losing to Llanfyllin Town in the final.

The 50th anniversary season (2007/08) of the club saw Guilsfield led by new manager Graham

Evans. The players went on a great Welsh Cup run after defeating 3 Welsh Premier League clubs

in Airbus UK, Connah's Quay Nomads and Caernarfon Town en route to losing in the Quarter

Final in front of 500 spectators to Bangor City. Our top scorer for the season, Tim Nunnerley was

rewarded for a fabulous year by being named the League's Player of the Year.

Mike Barton returned as manager in 2008/09 and we completed the season in 13th spot and met

Welsh Premier League giants The New Saints in the Welsh Cup, being narrowly defeated 3-2.

Unfortunately, we also suffered defeat in a penalty shoot-out in the League Cup semi final against

Holyhead Hotspur.

Season 2009/10 was full of interest, with the focus on the FAW controversial plans for the re-

structure of the Welsh Pyramid system. Our aim was to remain in this league but we struggled

with our inconsistent play up until Christmas. However, the New Year brought a change in

fortunes and the players put in a great League run in 2010 to secure our place in the Cymru

Alliance League, despite ten clubs being relegated.

In the 2010/11 season, we gained our first piece of silverware at this level by winning the Huws

Gray League Cup after a great performance to defeat Porthmadog in the final held at Cefn Druids

FC. During the season, the team was led by manager Russell Cadwallader.

The 2011/12 season saw Guilsfield managing to retain its league status and celebrating the official

opening of its new floodlights to bring the facilities up to the level of the majority of the other

member clubs. The club was proud to receive the Club of the Year award from the fellow

members of the Huws Gray Alliance.

The following season, the club finished in a respectable 8th spot and won the Central Wales Cup

with a 2-1 victory over Aberaeron. Russell stood down as Manager after the game. Guilsfield

appointed ex- Guilsfield player and Ellesmere Rangers manager Matthew Burton as its new

Manager for 2013/14. In his first season, Matt steered the club to sixth spot which meant

automatic qualification for The Word Cup in 2014. The year appeared to end on a high with

Assistant Manager Danny Barton being awarded both the League's Top Scorer and League Player

of the Year awards. However, in a final twist to the campaign, Matt had to stand down as Manager

due to changing work commitments.

Obviously recruiting a new manager was a priority and former player Mike Parry was given the

role in his first managerial appointment. Mike used his playing experience to realise that the squad

did not need tinkering with and the nucleus of the squad remained for the 2014/15 season. This

faith in the players was repaid as the Guils gained its highest ever league position with a 3rd place

finish. The team were also runners-up in the Huws Gray Cup final. Mike was duly rewarded as the

League's Manager of the Season. However, in a busy pre-season, Mike and Guilsfield parted

company due to family and work commitments and Danny Barton was subsequently appointed

Manager for the 2015/16 season.

In the interests of spectator comfort and safety, the following conditions apply at

The club reserves the right to ask a person to leave the ground who is in breach of

these rules or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others.

Please note the following and accept them as a condition of your entry to the ground at

all times:

1) The chanting/use of racist or obscene comments is strictly forbidden.

2) Alcohol is for sale within the clubhouse area of the ground and must be consumed

in the clubhouse. Under no circumstances is it permissible to drink alcohol in any

other area of the stadium. Please note that Holyhead Hotspur Football Club is also a

member of Holyhead’s Pubwatch scheme and as such must ensure that all patrons of

the clubhouse are not in breach of any banning orders currently in place.

3) Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times unless in the event of

an emergency situation arising at the stadium. Please ensure children are kept well

away from the barriers too to prevent the possibility of injuries occurring.

4) Please do not stand in the hatched areas clearly marked around the stadium. These

markings are in place to facilitate maximum spectator enjoyment in the seated area

and to mark out emergency points around the ground too.

5) In the event of any emergency situation arising, instructions will be given via the

Public Address system. Please listen carefully to these and comply with them to

ensure the safety of yourself and others in the area.

‘FAW Fair Play’ and ‘Off the Pitch’. This weekend the FAW will be promoting the FAW Fair Play and Off the Pitch campaigns. Today,

your team as well as the match officials will be wearing T-Shirts with the FAW Fair Play and Off

the Pitch logos during the warm up and hand-shake to promote the Fair Play message. We hope

that your club, as well as you as supporters will embrace the Fair Play message and continue the

good work your clubs have already done over past seasons.

The FAW Fair Play Code aims to raise the profile of the Fair Play message by inspiring players,

clubs, officials and supporters to maintain good on-field discipline including abiding by the Laws

of the Game, respecting opponents, referees and promoting the interests of football. To

encourage good behaviour, the FAW will periodically publish Disciplinary Tables for each of the

Directly-Affiliated Leagues via a dedicated page on the FAW website. Those topping each table at

the end of the season are awarded a Fair Play Award and a prize of £1000 to be spent on

improving facilities at your club. Previous winners of the Award have invested the money on an

upgrade to dressing rooms, new equipment such as balls, bibs, kit and improving the pitch. The

12 Winners of the 2013/14 season have received the £1000 prize money and were presented

with a Fair Play trophy before the Wales v Bosnia & Herzegovina UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifiers at

the Cardiff City Stadium in October 2014.

The FAW Off the Pitch campaign is also represented here today and aims to educate all of our

stakeholders including clubs and players with regards best practice when using social media. Off

the Pitch is also here to remind stakeholders how comments made via social media can reflect

on their club or competition that they participate in and therefore, offers advice to players and

club officials such as treating others with respect. Be in the right state of mind when posting and

to generally act responsibly when using all forms of social media.

The Off the Pitch campaign is unique amongst National Associations within Europe and has been

utilised as evidence of best practice with regards promoting the positive usage of social media by

UEFA. The FAW social media team look forward to continuing to work together with all its

stakeholders over the coming seasons.

Michael Gray - This is Michaels fourth season on the referees panel after starting refereeing at the tender age of 14. Michael who is a brother of Liam who is also on the Cymru Alliance referees panel hails from Rhyl and comes from a family steeped in refereeing with grandfather Wally, father Glenn and brother Liam all well known in refereeing circles. Michael has officiated on the NWCFA Cup final at on the Wales v Sweden u-17 international. Michael has attended the UEFA “Core” programme last season Liam Gray - Liam who is 23 comes from Rhyl and is the brother of Michael who is also a HGA Referee and started refereeing at the tender age of 13.He is actively involved in local youth football and the local Referees Association in Rhyl. He has spent 3 seasons on the FAW development programme. Matches that Liam has been involved in include U-15 international Wales v Poland and U-16 ladies international Wales v Holland. Liam has refereed in the Welsh Alliance Leaguelast season and refereed their cup final and the NWCFA Junior cup final last season. Dan Fogerty - This is second season on the full panel after a successful season in the Welsh National League- Wrexham Area. Dan who resides in ConahsQuay is now affiliated to the North East Wales FA Dan has blossomed and has officiated on the NEWFA Challenge Cup Final and the Welsh National Premier division Cup Final . Dan likes most sports and away from football enjoys spending time with his family. Andy Harms - Andy needs no introduction, having started out as a referee as a fourteen year old and has progressed as a top referee in North Wales over the last 20 years. He is married to Carolyn and has three children Sophie , Benjamin and Olivia. Andy has officiated at many finals in his career to date including our own League cup Final as well as officiating on several European Appointments in Russia, ,Serbia, Iceland and Norway. As well as serving many years on the Cymru Alliance Andy has also officiated in the Welsh Premier League as a referee. Ellis Hughes - Ellis who hails from Wrexham comes from a sporting and supportive family and started refereeing in 2008 as a fourteen year old.. He is currently studying “Education” at Gkyndwr University wuth th aim as getting a job in the teaching profession. Ellis has officiated for several years in the Welsh National League and also spending three years on the FAW Development programme including officiating as an assistant on the Cymru Alliance.. He supports Manchester United and in his spare time he enjoys visiting Old Trafford. Rob Jenkins - Rob hails from Guilsfield and this will be third season on the referees panel after officiating on the Assistants panel and refereeing on the Spar Mid Wales League. Rob has spent three seasons as part of the FAW Development group in Central Wales..Rob has officiated as an assistant on the Welsh Youth Cup final, the Huws Gray Cup final and the Welsh Trophy final. Outside football his hobbies are golf, snooker and travelling. Rob has been promoted onto the Talent list on the Welsh Premier League. Ashley Jones - This is Ashleys third season on the HGA referees panel. He started refereeing in 2007 progressing through the FAWs development group.This season will be Ashleys second year as a talent referee on the Welsh Premier League He is studying sports science at Glyndwr University in Wrexham Away from football Ashley enjoys squash, golf, tennis, and running. Last season he officiated on the NorthEast Wales Challenge cup final. Aled Rhys Jones - Aled who hails from Cilcennin near Lampeter, is married with 3 children and is employed As an area officer with the Farmers Union of Wales. This is Aled’s ninth season as a referee and his fifth on the full panel of the Huws Gray Alliance League League after a successful playing career which has stood him in good stead as a referee Aled has officiated on the Welsh Regions Cup Final and also on the Ladies Welsh Cup final. Away from football Aled keeps busy on his farm in Cilcennin. Gareth W Jones - Gareth hails from Bontnewydd near Caernarfon and started refereeing in 2001 at the age of 16. In 2009 he was promoted onto the Huws Gray Alliance referees list. He has been an Assistant Referee in the Huws Gray Alliance, a referee in the NWCFA Cup Final and an Assistant referee in the Welsh Cup Final.. He was selected by FAW to attend a UEFA Referees training course in Switzerland where a received a diploma in refereeing. Gareth is employed by a Local Housing Association in Gwynedd and enjoys swimming, and singing in the local male voice choir. Gareth has been promoted onto the FIFA

Assistant Referees panel and has officiated in Europe as an Assistant Referee on many occasions. Gareth was the referee for last seasons Huws Gray cup final John A Jones - John who hails from Mold took up the whistle as a 13 year old passing the Laws of the cours as a 14 year old.Now at 20 is on his second season on the panel of the Huws Gray Alliance League. He has spent the 3 years on the Area FA Development scheme. and acted as an Assistant on the FAW Womens Cup Final and also on the Huws Gray Cup Final .John. has also participated in the FAW exchange scheme travelling to Dublin.John was North East Wales RA Referee of the year for season 2013-2014 JB Roberts - John or JB as he is affectionately known in football circles comes from Llanllyfmi near Caernarfon and is a self employed flue liner specialist. This will be Johns ninth season on the panel and during that time he has been one of the most consistent referees on our league. He has served on the FIFA Assistant Referees panel for a number of seasons and has travelled extensively across Europe officiating. In 2012/013 season John had the honour of refereeing the Huws Gray Alliance League Cup Final. Tom Roberts - Tom who hails from Mold has been refereeing since he was 16 and this will be Toms second season on the Huws Gray Alliance referees panel having progressed via NEWFA/FAW development scheme and the Welsh National League. Tom is employed by Chester and Chester West Council and enjoys all sports and has a very supportive family steeped in local football. Tom refereed the final of the Welsh National League last season Martin W Roberts - This will be fourth season on the referees list of the League and overall it will be Martin’s eighth season as a referee and he have moved quickly through the ranks with many consistent performances. Martin who hails from Llangefni is employed by the finance department of Anglesey County Council. His hobbies apart from football include cricket, ten pin bowling, cycling and having a round of golf. Last season he attended the residential UEFA Assistant referees course un Switzerland. Martin has officiated as an assistant referee at the WPL League cup finalan has officiated in Malta as part of the Uefa exchange scheme. Phil Roszkowski - Phil who hails from Wrexham is now in his thirteenth season on the Referees panel having played at Cymru Alliance football prior to taking up the whistle. He is employed as an Intensive Support Worker in the Wrexham Area where he lives with his wife Susan.and family. Phil’s interests outside football include swimming, ,mountain biking, lomg distance running, fishing and hill walking. Highlight of his career was officiating at the Welsh Cup Final in 2010. Tom Owen - Tom whose family is steeped in football hail from Hawarden with both parents involved in local football, Tom has been involved in the FAW development group via the NEWFA and this has helped hi progress over the last couple of seasons. Tom is keen on football coaching and plays an active role in this aspect of football This is Toms first season on the referees panel of the Cymru Alliance following a successful season in the Welsh National League Martin Williams - Martin who hails from Johnstown near Wrexham is married with two children. This is Martins eleventh season on the full list after taking up refereeing in 1998. Martin is employed on the assembly line/paint shop at Vauxhall Motors in Ellesmere Port. Very much a family man his wife Carl acts as his PA and he is keen for his son Geraint and daughter Sian to progress in refereeing, Geraint being on the Huws Gray Assistants panel..Martin has officiated at the Welsh Cup Final and the Cymru Alliance cup final. In 2013 was referee on the Huws Gray League Cup final between Conwy Borough and Caersws and has also had the honour of officiating at the Welsh Cup Final.and Welsh Premier League final James Walker - James who comes from Flint commenced refereeing in 2009 and was quickly invited to join the FAW Development programme and this cumulated in him being fast tracked through the system and invited onto the Huw Gray Alliance referees panel for 2012/13. A former football player and manager James is interested in all sports . He is employed by St Davids High School where he is head of the Upper School. Married to Faye they have 2 young children sons Joe and Noah.. Hobbies that James participates in are skiing, golf and fitness training Tom Williams - Tom starting refereeing at the tender age of 14 resides in Wrexham and has quickly risen through the ranks via the FAW Development programme. Now 21 this will be Toms third season on the referees panel of the Huws Gray Alliance, following progression via the Welsh National League. Tom is employed as an aircraft fitter at the local Airbus factory at Broughton and amongst his hobbies enjoys,

cricket, Golf and fishing.He iss keen on coaching young players and carries out duties at local team Brickfield Rangers. Tom has been promoted onto the talent list of referees for season 2015-16 Tom has officiated at the FAW Welsh Trophy Final and the NEWFA Challenge Cup Final David Wright - David who hails from Llay near Wrexham is very much a sports fanatic ,refereeing in the winter and with a passion for cricket in the summer, a regular Llay CC batsman. David has just completed his third season in the Welsh National League and during that time has been part of the North East Wales FA group linked into the FAW Development Group.
