Soccer begins play in the fall of 1991 while softball commences during the spring of 1993. Dec. 18, 1990 — Dang Pibulvech is hired as the first head coach of the UW women’s soccer team. Pibulvech came from Colorado College which earned seven NCAA Tournament bids and four final four berths under his leadership. Sept. 8, 1991 — The Washington women’s soccer program’s first goal, shutout, and win all come in the inaugural game, a 2-0 victory at San Diego State. Rhonda Klein scored the first goal 65 minutes into the contest and Amy Hamamoto tallied the other. Goalkeeper Tamara Browder was credited with the shutout. Sept. 12, 1991 — The first overtime game in school history results in a 3-2 victory at UC Irvine. Sept. 14, 1991 — The first “home” game in UW history results in the team’s first-ever tie, a 1-1 standoff with 16th- ranked Portland. The game is played at Everett High School in front of an estimated 350 spectators. Washington’s Melanie Brennan tied the score 1-1 at 41:15. Sept. 16, 1991 — The Huskies receive their first national ranking, assuming the No. 20 position in the weekly ISAA poll of coaches. During its first week in existence, UW posted a 2-1-1 record. Nov. 2, 1991 — The Huskies down Simon Fraser 4-0 in the final game of their inaugural season. The victory was a still- standing record seventh consecutive shutout and eighth for the season. UW finishes with a 10-6-2 record. Sept. 23, 1992 — Goalkeeper Tamara Browder registers a still-standing school record 14 saves during a 2-1 overtime decision at Michigan State. Oct. 3, 1992 — The Huskies win their first match against a ranked opponent with a 2-0 shutout against No. 20 St. Mary’s in California. UW had failed on all 10 previous attempts to defeat a ranked team. Nov. 1, 1992 — Shelley Robinson scores the 50th goal in team history during a 6-0 win over Gonzaga. The victory caps UW’s second season with an 8-9-2 mark. Sept. 15-19, 1993 — The Huskies survive the toughest week in the history of the program with home victories over No. 5 Santa Clara (2-1) and No. 3 Duke (2-0). Third-ranked Duke is the highest rank opponent the Huskies have ever beaten. The only loss of the difficult week came at the hands of top- ranked and defending NCAA champion North Carolina (0-2). Nov. 7, 1993 — Washington concludes its third season with a 5-0 triumph over Gonzaga. The Huskies had a 9-6-2 ledger during the 1993 campaign. Feb. 28, 1994 — Athletic Director Barbara Hedges an- nounces the hiring of head coach Lesle Gallimore. The sec- ond coach in UW history, Gallimore replaces Dang Pibulvech. She previously coached four years at SanDiego State. Sept. 3, 1994 — Tara Bilanski registers the first hat-trick in Husky history, but is immediately topped by teammate Emily Thompson. Bilanski tallied the first three goals during an 8- 0 win over Gonzaga. Thompson scored four of the next five goals to set a still-standing Husky single-game goal record. It is the only time two UW players had hat tricks the same game. Coach Lesle Gallimore’s debut sees UW notch records for goals and victory margin. Sept. 5, 1994 — Emily Thompson nets the Huskies’ 100th all-time goal during a 2-2 tie at eighth-ranked Santa Clara. Sept. 24 & 25, 1994 — Washington wins its first Husky/ Umbro Invitational tournament title with a 6-2 victory over SMU and a 2-0 win over UC-Irvine. Sept. 26, 1994 — The Huskies garner their highest ever national ranking, climbing to No. 8 in the weekly Soccer America magazine poll. Nov. 9, 1994 — Washington beats Oregon State 3-0 in the Huskies’ first NCAA Tournament game. Nov. 12, 1994 — Washington battles No. 3 Stanford to a 0- 0 overtime tie before being eliminated by a 6-5 penalty-kick tiebreaker setback in the NCAA West Regional Semifinal in Portland. Despite the loss, the shutout was a record 10th of the season. The Huskies conclude the season with a 13-6-2 record. Her career assist total increased to 20, also a Husky record. Nov. 18, 1995 — Washington is eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 loss at Portland. The Huskies conclude the season with a 12-8 record, 4-3 in Pac-10 play to tie for third place in the conference standings. Sept. 22, 1996 — Lesle Gallimore registers her 28th win to become the all-time winningest coach in Husky history. Washington downs USC 3-2. Oct. 4 & 6, 1996 — Washington remains undefeated in Husky/Umbro Invitational action, defeating Michigan 3-0 and Cal Poly-SLO 2-1 to win its third straight title. July 7, 2000 — Caroline Putz becomes the Huskies second “capped” player, respresenting the U.S. National Team in Central Islip, N.Y. Putz entered in the 87th minute and scored a goal on her second touch of the game in a 4-1 exhibition win over Italy. Aug. 26, 2000 — Tami Bennett’s hat trick leads UW to an 8- 0 season-opening win over Eastern Washington. The eight- goal outburst matched the school record for both single-game goals and victory margin. Sept. 4, 2000 — The Soccer America poll lists WashingtonNo. 17, the school’s first national ranking since Sept. 9, 1996.

Washington clinched its first ever Pacific-10Conference women’s soccer championship with a 6-1 victory at Oregon on Oct. 29, 2000. UW became thefirst school outside the state of California to win thePac-10 title.

Dec. 10, 2000 — Theresa Wagner is selected by the BayArea CyberRays in the ninth round of the inaugural WUSAdraft, the 72nd pick overall.

Dec. 13, 2000 — Sophomore Hope Solo is named the sec-ond-team All-America goalkeeper by the National SoccerCoaches Association of America.

Jan. 5, 2001 — Lesle Gallimore is named national Coach ofthe Year by Soccer Buzz magazine.

March 5, 2001 — Lesle Gallimore is chosen to serve as anassistant coach with the U.S. Women’s National Team atthe Algarve Cup in Portugal.

Aug. 9, 2001 — The Huskies six-person recruiting class isranked the nation’s 10th best by Soccer Buzz. Ranked for thefourth consecutive year, the UW was No. 25 in 2000, 14 in1999 and 12 in 1998.

Sept. 14 & 16, 2001 — For the first time in program historygames are canceled. The scheduled Portland Invitationalcontests against Nebraska and Alabama-Birmingham arecanceled due to the national tragedy on Sept. 11. Despiteattempts, the games were unable to be re-scheduled.

Nov. 18, 2001 — The Huskies are eliminated in the secondround of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 loss at No. 3 Port-land. UW completes the season with a 13-5-2 record and tiefor second place in the conference with a 6-2-1 Pac-10 mark.

Sept. 24, 2002 — Junior Melissa Bennett is named Pac-10Co-Player of the Week after posting a goal and three assistsin wins over Harvard and UC Irvine. She was named Offen-sive MVP after helping UW to its first Nike Invitational titlesince 1996.

Nov. 4, 2002 — Junior Melissa becames UW’s single-sea-son assist leader with her 13th in a 3-1 win at Oregon State.She will finish with 18 assists, the second-highest total inthe nation in 2003.

Nov. 10, 2002 — Despite capping a 9-8-3 season with a 5-0 win over No. 15 USC, the Huskies do not receive an NCAATournament invitation.

Feb. 2, 2003 — Hope Solo is selected by the PhiladelphiaCharge in the first round of the WUSA draft, the fourth pickoverall.

Sept. 2, 2003 — Junior Tina Frimpong is named Pac-10Player of the Week after scoring all three of UW’s goals inthe season-opening Pac-10/ACC Challenge. She was namedOffensive MVP of the tournament as UW defeated No. 18Maryland 2-1 before losing 2-1 to No. 1 North Carolina.

Sept. 23, 2003 — Junior Tina Frimpong receives her sec-ond Pac-10 Player of the Week award after leading the Hus-kies to their second straight Husky/Nike Invitational title.She amassed four goals, including both game winners, alongwith an assist as UW won 3-1 over No. 6 Texas two daysafter beating Fresno State by a 3-0 count.

Oct. 19, 2003 — Senior Melissa becames UW’s career as-sist leader with her 28th in a 2-0 win over Oregon. She willfinish with 29 career assists.

Nov. 13, 2003 — Junior forward Tina Frimpong becomesthe second Husky honored as the Pac-10 Player of the Yearafter leading the conferrence with 13 goals. Frimpong, whotallied four assists and 30 total points, shared the Pac-10honor with UCLA defender Nandi Pryce.

Washington was well represented at the inaugural USYS/adidas Cup dur-ing February of 1999 in Orlando, Fla. Huskies in attendance were (left toright) Assistant Coach Amy Griffin, Hope Solo, Head Coach Lesle Gallimore,Katey Ward and Caroline Putz. Allmann and Gallimore were coaching theU.S. under-19 national team, Solo played for the U-18 national team, Putzplayed for the U-19 team and Ward was at the U-21 training camp.
