“hurrell’s have always
been known for our
dedication to quality. We
have expanded steadily over the past ten
years, no more so than with the amenity
sector of the business. All of our products
are suitable for professional use of the
upmost standard. All amenity and turfseed mixtures that we
supply are mixed here on site by our specialist team, under
deFrA rules and official regulations. We take pride in our
quality, and we differ from many sundry merchants. some of
these probably never even see the product, and therefore in
my books, cannot be classed as seedsmen.
The doubling of warehouse space in 2010 enabled a whole
new sector dedicated to amenity ‘straights’ and mixtures.
We can therefore offer a wide spectrum of cultivars
from many breeders worldwide, all recommended
by the ‘sports Turf research institute’ or the ‘British
society of plant Breeders limited’.
We look in depth and develop our own opinion,
through field researched facts and figures in cultivar
traits which are not always independently tested. For
example, the ability to grow in cooler soils. Being
independent, we have no axe to grind and genuinely
try to maximise cultivars, therefore increasing amenity
performance in all of our mixtures. We must look more in
depth at cultivars and not just simply use any permutation of
grasses which are of a certain mean score. That is only half
the story. For example, for cricket use where good recovery
and regrowth is required, varieties at the top of the current
turfgrass list are, in our opinion, simply not most suitable
varieties.
We have seen this year the introduction that could
revolutionise football and rugby. in the renovation market
there is now the first genuine amenity dwarf perennial that
we have ever used to grow in considerably cooler soils from
completely new genetics. We will continue to search for new
concepts and new ideas to bring increased performance to
British turf professionals.”

due to the vast amount of years hurrell and mclean
seeds have been supplying grass seed, we have been
able to categorize the various uses for amenity grasses.
And produce individual mixtures to especially suit the various needs a
customer may need. For this exact reason, we have categorised the
different usages of amenity grasses, to help our customers find the most
suitable mixture for their various projects.
Within landscaping and the numerous sports turf areas we can cater for, we have specialist
mixtures to enable plenty of choice and specification. some are designed for re-growth,
some for maintenance, as well as those highly successful general mixtures.
however, what separates hurrell’s from most other leading seed companies, is the fact
that we do not limit our sales to the mixtures within this booklet. We firmly believe that
each customer has their own individual wants, and if it is something not within our list of
mixtures, our seed specialists will design a specific mixture which will guarantee to meet
the demands placed before us.
The reason for this is because we care about the results our seeds obtain. To us, selling a
product means being able to give a guarantee that this product will provide what it
promises. Therefore, if we do not ensure you receive the most appropriate mixture, this
guarantee cannot be given. We refuse to take this risk, so for this reason every member of
our team is available for one to one analysis with each and every one of our customers.

A good sportsman is only able to play to the best of his ability on a pitch or
ground that matches this.
We realize that every different type of sporting ground has diverse requirements for it to be
successful.
This is why our mixtures our categorised into varying sporting sections. Our research has
shown that due to the differing amounts a sports ground is damaged or the visual quality it
needs, special mixtures are required instead of just general mixtures given to any sport.
For example, football and rugby pitches need to be hardwearing and quick to establish,
whereas a cricket square demands good wear tolerance and the ability to be closely mown.
Throughout 2010, our sales team have been working closely with numerous green keepers
around the country to develop various new mixtures especially suited for golf courses. We now have over
fifteen mixtures combining different standards of cultivars to suit any price range. Whether it be for greens,
tees or fairways, we now confidently believe we can cover any requirement, and partake in the establishment
of a superior and highly successful golf course.
it is no surprise that a racecourse will undertake severe damage during the racing season. Because of this, our
equestrian mixtures will withstand hard wear, whilst producing a high shoot density. We have combined the
need for an attractive race course, with the ability to overseed divots. perfect!

cachemire is one of the new generation of sports perennial ryegrass
cultivars, bred specifically for summer sports turf use.
it was supplied in 2009 to several leading cricket clubs, who have all
been extremely impressed with its results. it has been said that in their
opinion, it could be the variety to eclipse sauvignon in performance.
Below is an example of the strength of its qualities:
cAchemireThe new sports turf perennial ryegrass...

Amadeus 6.2 6.6 6.1 6.4
Cachemire 7.5 7.4 7.4 7.0
Greenway 6.9 7.4 6.9 5.9
As the table suggests, cachemire is marked highly upon its qualities. its main benefits for a sports ground are:
{ excellent shoot density to give good grass coverage
{ Fine leafed with low crown which helps to produce a true even surface
{ Fantastic cleanliness of cut and visual merit. This enables the production of a wicket with a highly pleasing appearance
{ Fast regrowth which will aid recovery from wear and damage
{ Goo d resistance to red Thread
We can supply cachemire as a single cultivar or as a part of any of our mixtures. if this variety is not in any of the mixtures
that you require, we will be happy to include this for you, enabling you to see the fantastic results for yourself.

putting greens are not all of the same quality. Generally, the finest-quality greens are well
kept so that a ball will smoothly roll over the very
closely-mowed grass.
Traditionally greens have been seeded with chewings fescue and common bent to an 80:20 ratio. however,
with clubs pressured to produce consistently fast greens these species are simply not able to perform to
such levels. Over the last two decades Green Keepers have had an ongoing annual renovation programme to
aerate and introduce better grasses.
hurrells believe that we should look more towards higher quality slender creeping red fescues, as well as chewings fescues
which are easier to introduce and have excellent fine turf performance. slender red fescue will also work very well in lower
fertility situations. We have numerous different quality bents, including browntop cultivars
such as Troy and manor, and for high budget courses the stoliferous creeping bents. There
are now many different opportunities for British Green Keepers to improve greens quality.

the inclusion of a turf ryegrass will add greatly to the speed of greening up,
establishment, and increase wear tolerance. there is some compromise in
turf quality in return for this extra turf strength in that the leaf appearance is
generally a little broader even in modern improved by breeding turf cultivars.
the most important factors are a nice turf appearance and ability to
withstand wear.
Mixes of higher or all fescue content are generally of better cosmetic quality
but very often simply wear out unless very well maintained.

ColosseuM turF perenniAl rYeGrAss
ColosseuM is a medium-fine, mid-green perennial
ryegrass that has both rapid germination in cold
temperatures (down to 5 degrees centigrade) and
active winter growth and has been bred specifically
for amenity use.
ColosseuM is ideally suited to winter sports
grounds, golf tees, golf fairways and any area that
receives heavy winter wear.
ColosseuM was bred from the few surviving plants
out of a test cricket pitch. The surviving plants were
crossed and resulted in a cultivar capable of
withstanding extreme adverse conditions.
ColosseuM has been used with great success at
major new Zealand sports venues such as eden park
and Wellington stadium.
ColosseuM has been shown to have better drought
tolerance than many of the european bred cultivars

Unless landscaping is your profession, you may not be aware of the numerous varieties of grass seeds that are
available. There is not merely one seed that will suit every habitat, but several different kinds that, when
teamed together, will produce a lavish area of grass. For example, dwarf perennial ryegrass is extremely quick
to establish, as well as being wear tolerant. strong creeping red fescue gives a very good ground cover, where
as slender red creeping fescue is fine leaved whilst being drought tolerant. Browntop bent has a very high
shoot density, ideal for areas that need to be cut low. These are just a few examples of the
different species we use in our mixtures. As you can see, we use your specific requirements
to analyse the best combinations of seed to ensure you obtain the best possible results.
The mixtures in this section were designed for the particular conditions they will be used for.
if the area of land is not able to receive regular attention, then the hm.2 low maintenance
mixture would be ideal for this purpose. We realize that weather conditions
can also be a large factor in the success of grassed areas, and for this
reason we offer mixtures suitable for shaded, drought and coastal areas.
When it comes to wild flowers, we have over one hundred species
available, allowing you the utmost choice when choosing
your mixture. Wild flowers can be sold by themselves,
with other varieties, or within a grass mixture to reduce
the cost.

W.A.s.p. is the abbreviation
for ‘Water Absorbing seed
process’. This unique seed
coating technology provides the seedling
with additional water and nutritious
elements from the very beginning. The
innovate seed coat includes a water
absorber, which ensures permanent humidity and a fast and
safe germination. The additional water helps the seedling
especially under dry conditions. nearly every kind of seed that
we supply can now be supplied with our new WAsp system.
seed CoAtinG With huMiC ACids – this seed treatment
affects the whole plant and its life.
seeds – the treatment of the seeds with diluted humate
solution stimulates the cell membranes as well as the metabolic
activities and increases thereby the germination rate.
roots – the capacity of the root to take up nutrients is
increased by using humic acids.
plAnt GroWth – the plant development increases by
enhanced cell assimilation and photosynthesis.
We also have 100% smooth stalked meadow Grass for inclusion in Turf production mixtures
and also a Fine Turf mixture.
We are eager to deal with questions regarding this new seed treatment, so please call for information.

not everybody is aware of all of the species of grass that are available. The
cultivars we use are all recommended by the ‘sTri’ which is the sports Turf
research institute. each variety is given a score out of ten on the
characteristics such as wear tolerance, summer greenness and many more.
Aside from this, for those who do not have a significant knowledge of grasses,
it may not be clear as to why we use the specific types in our mixtures. if the
description below each mixture is not enough information, the table to the left
will hopefully help give a better understanding of why we use what we do. This
also enables you to tailor make your own mixture. When looking at the table,
you can see the marks out of ten for characteristics of the various grasses,
allowing you to focus on the results you want to obtain and choosing the best
species for these requirements. We are always happy to help you find the
perfect mixture which is why you can speak to one of our specialists at any
time. if you do not have access to an sTri list for information about the
cultivars, we will gladly go through this with you to help you find the perfect
cultivar. We stock some of the most highly rated seed available.

VerY hiGh WinterhArdiness
Timothy has from nature the very best
cold tolerance.
it grows very well in the northern
scandinavian under long days and low
temperature. The normal timothe for
forage is phleum pratense but
piccOlO is of the special low and small

breed for aminity use under cold and
wet conditions.
niCe densitY
density is normally not linked to timothy but piccOlO offers a very nice
dense carpet of grass beeing of the Bertolonii type and not of the the
normal forage types. Under normal mowing as lawn piccOlO has a very
nice density with a soft growt habit - excellent for lawns.
