2017 PROGRESS
The community is very supportive• 100 volunteers helped support and spread the word
about the Border-to-Border Trail (B2B) project• We were out in force at more than 20 events as part of
our Karen’s Trail Campaign community outreach effort• We regularly engaged with our 1,600 trail supporters
through social media and our online newsletter
Businesses and individuals are giving generously...• In 2017, we raised a total of $1.9 million• The Karen’s Trail Campaign raised over $450,000• 600 unique donors have provided
financial support to our work
Our public-private partnership is strong...• HWPI worked with the Washtenaw County Parks
and Recreation Commission (WCPARC), the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Washtenaw County Road Commission and more than a dozen community groups this year
• $5.2 million in state grants were secured over the past 18 months through the collective efforts of WCPARC and HWPI
• 38 businesses and individuals made multi-year financial commitments to fund the Trail
HWPI is ready to support building the B2B...• We established physical offices in the Chelsea Wellness Center,
thanks to the Five Healthy Towns Foundation• The HWPI Board hired an Executive Director in July, 2017
CONSTRUCTION PLANS
Looking AheadWashtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission (WCPARC), in partnership with HWPI is very pleased to proceed with the rapid expansion of the B2B. The construction planned for 2018 and 2019 will make great strides toward the completion of the 70-mile, non-motorized, 10-foot wide, ADA compliant (Americans with Disabilities Act) pathway. 2018 Confirmed ConstructionWe are nearly complete with engineering, permitting and funding requirements and anticipate building two trail segments in the spring of 2018. Chelsea/Stockbridge Connector (Phase 1) – 2.60 milesThis segment begins at the intersection of M52/Werkner and ends at the DNR’s Green Lake campground. The segment will connect to the Waterloo Recreation Area and the DTE Foundation Mountain Bike Trail System. The Huron River Trail (Phase 2) – 1.20 milesThis segment begins in the Dexter-Huron Metropark and ends at Zeeb Road. It will include 2 bridges and eventually connect to the Zeeb Road Trail being built by Scio Township. Potential 2018 ConstructionThree additional trail segments are almost at “shovel-ready” status and COULD be built in 2018, if enough private funding can be raised to match Washtenaw County and State of Michigan funds. Chelsea/Stockbridge Connector (Phase 2) – 2.2 miles This segment begins at the Green Lake campground and ends at North Territorial Road. Dexter-Chelsea Connection (Phase 1) – 2.2 milesThis segment begins at Freer Road and heads east on Dexter-Chelsea Road. The Huron River Corridor Near Ann Arbor - 0.6 milesThis segment begins near Barton Dam and traverses Barton Nature area within Ann Arbor. Studies are currently underway for possible 2018 construction.
The WCPRC and HWPI are committed to active construction along the Huron River every year and are striving for completion of the B2B by the fall of 2021. Help us to make sure the 2018 construction blitz continues into 2019.
With your support we can build this amazing Trail system!
We launched the Karen’s Trail Campaign, a public awareness and fund-raising effort to honor the life and legacy of Karen McKeachie, a world-class athlete from Ann Arbor and a pioneer in women’s sports. Karen has inspired the community to complete the B2B, creating safe recreational pathways and encouraging active, healthy and connected communities.
