The Chamber Bright Stars for 2013 were recognized re-cently at the semi-annual Chamber Leadership meetingand sixth annual Chamber Bright Star Awards presenta-tion of the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce(NOACC) in the Legends Club at the First Energy Stadiumin Cleveland.

More than 50 chambers of commerce across northernOhio nominated a person from their chamber as theirBright Star, to recognize someone who has made asignificant impact on the chamber through member-ship, retention, sponsorship, economic development, op-erations and/or education. Each Bright Star is an activechamber member for no less than two years and is likelyto be an unsung hero or a dedicated behind-the-scenes

volunteer.John Clark was honored posthumously by the Huron

Chamber for his nearly two decades of service as BGSUFirelands Colleges permanent representative to theBoard of Directors. His wife, Cindy, and daughter, Jenni-

fer, accepted his certificate and trophy from Tony Gallo,NOACC chairman and director of business developmentfor Lorain County Chamber. The Huron Chamber lost not only a long-time board

member, but a dedicated volunteer and great friendwhen he was killed in an auto accident last May. As coor-dinator of career services at the college, he left a legacyof young and re-entry students whose lives he impactedin very positive ways.

At a memorial service on campus this fall, several hun-dred people turned out, each with a heart-warmingstory of how he touched their hearts and helped themalong the path to a finer future. A quiet, can-do kind ofguy, John was always eager to pitch in and help with the

many various Chamber activities throughout the year. But always, just beneath the surface, was that razor-

sharp wit and dry sense of humor which surfaced eachDecember when he donned a Santa suit during theChambers stint at the Festival of Lights. As a car full of

children pulled up to the Candy Cane house, John wouldmorph into an engaging Saint Nick who had them con-vinced that he was watching closely from the North Poleto see if they were naughty or nice. Their eyes wouldget a big as saucers and you just knew that they wouldbe on their behavior until the big day.The Bright Star award winners represent a wide range

of involvement with their respective chambers, somehaving been a member and or officer or committeechairman for 20+ years and some being newly involvedbut each of whom has given freely of his/her time, work-ing hard for their chambers without any expectations.Tony Gallo, NOACC Chairman said our volunteers are

the common bond in each chamber. Giving recognition

to our Bright Star in a public way lets our membershipand community know we appreciate the time, talent andtreasure that they provided.

For many years, Canton (Ohio) area residents purchaseduniform apparel from long-standing business, UniformsUnique. About four years ago, the thriving uniform busi-ness was purchased from its founder by her daughter,Lori Gray. The business was subsequently renamed, TheUniform Store.Though Lori grew up in Canton, she was also quite fa-

miliar with the Huron area. Lori explained that We hada boat at Catawba Island when I was a kid, and we cameup here every weekend. Back then Route 2 did not goacross the Huron River, so we had to exit at Berlin Roadand come thru Huron and then pick up the highway onthe other side of town. We used to stop at the Pied Pip-er, Berardi's, and Marconi's at least once or twice everymonth. Further she stated I grew up loving the charmof Huron. When Lori purchased the uniform store fromher mother, she decided to leave her career as a Re-gional Sales Director for a large nursing home company.Owning the uniform store offered her the flexibility toslow down and assist in caring for her mother who hadsome health issues. After some life changes, Lori and hermother decided to move to Huron and join her brotherwho had lived here for many years.

With her husbands encouragement, Lori decided to

open The Uniform Place, Too here in Huron. Lori chose toopen her second business in the north end of the build-ing at 607 Main Street. Lori and Lucky Stone Promotionsowner, Jenny Hagy, already had a business relationshipfor custom embroidery, so the location was a natural fit.The Uniform Place, Too carries a wide variety of healthcare apparel for anyone that needs to wear scrubs towork. In addition, they carry housekeeping uniforms,

chef coats, cook jackets, waitress aprons, hats, pants, etc. Some of the brands that The Uniform Place, Too carriesinclude Jockey Scrubs, Koi and Orange Standard, Won-der Wink, Crocs, and Peaches. The store also offers a fullline of medical accessories and other health care-relateditems. According to Lori, We pride ourselves on know-ing the latest in brands, trends and fit and fabric. Weknow what looks good and what will be comfortable towear all day!The Uniform Place, Too will be celebrating their grand

opening on Saturday, November 16. The store is openTuesday through Friday from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM andSaturday from 10 AM until 3:00 PM. Should a customerneed something in an emergency outside of normalbusiness hours, Lori will gladly open the store. That isone benefit of shopping local! she exclaimed.

For many years, the store front at 607 South Main Streetsat vacant; yet, now the display windows are full just intime for the holidays. At the beginning of this month,Lucky Stone Promotions moved into the south portionof the retail space and opened their doors for business. This unique store is owned and operated by Huron resi-dent, Jenny Hagy, and her husband, Joel.

From 1996 until 2008, Jenny worked as a manufactur-ing representative for a company offering corporate ap-parel. In 2008, she decided to strike out on her own inthe corporate apparel and promotional merchandisebusiness and started Lucky Stone Promotions. At that

point, Jenny ran her business out of her home and re-lied on online sales exclusively. As the business grew, shelooked for an opportunity to expand her offerings. Jennyfelt there was a need in Huron for a retail outlet that of-fered resort wear and also high-end custom embroider-ing. So, Jenny began looking for a retail space to open astore to showcase her products. She found the perfect

location on South Main Street. In addition to still offer-ing custom corporate promotional items, the retail storecarries Huron Tigers, Ohio State, and Huron/Lake Erie ap-parel, including Varsity jackets, and other merchandise.Sizes offered run from infant to youth extra large to adultsizes extra small to 3X. In addition, items created by lo-cal artists, such as beach glass jewelry, note cards, andunique crocheted baby items, are also available.Though Lucky Stone Promotions has been open since

November 2, the store will be having an official ribboncutting on November 14 and will be celebrating theirgrand opening on Saturday, November 16. Door prizeswill be available for those who visit the store during their

grand opening. Lucky Stone Promotions is open from11:00 AM until 6:00 PM on Tuesday through Friday andfrom 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM on Saturday. The store isclosed on Sunday and Monday. For more information, visit their web site, www.luckystonepromotions, theirFacebook page, or call the store at 419-616-6008.

Look into those twinkling eyes and you can see why the late John Clark captivated chil-dren when he morphed into the jolly old man with the white beard.

Clarks wife, Cindy, and her daughter, Jennifer, accept the posthumous Bright Star awardfrom the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce at a Cleveland awards banquet.

Weve probably all seen herbs that people have at-tempted to winter over in the home, and they look abit scraggly and unsightly. This scenario doesnt haveto happen.

First of all, if you have small size plants that are not overgrown, or are perhaps babies grown from seeds of theoriginal mother plant this same year, those plants willbe you first choice to dig up and keep inside. If not, donot dig up huge weathered plants and try to bring theminto your home. Many greenhouses and other gardenestablishments still have nice sized healthy plants whichwould have a much better chance to winter over in thehome very nicely. The best plants to use for growing inside the home

are chives, oregano, rosemary, and mints. Many peoplehave tried to grow basil inside but the plant tires in a

few weeks, and then never really look nice. If you have agreenhouse at home, your herbs will do well. But if youdont have a greenhouse, try to stick to ones that havemore stamina as suggested.

When you first prepare to bring plants inside, eitherfrom your garden or a store purchase, look them overcarefully for insects. Plant each plant in an appropriatelysized pot, each pot being 1 inch larger around then thepurchased plant, or at least 2 from the outer edge ofthe plant.

Put the herbs in your brightest window, and check forwater needs on a regular basis. Dont leave them stand-ing in water, but dont let them completely dry out. Donot fertilize your herbs. If possible try to have yourhomes humidity level at about 40% or more. Most of theherbs need warmth, 65-75 to survive. However, Rose-

mary would like you to place her in your coldest room inthe home with at least some strong indirect light. Shedoes not like the dry stagnant air in homes, thus preferscooler areas and higher humidity. Our furnaces dry outour air, unless we have a humidifier attached to it. Feelfree to lightly mist the plants 2-3 times a week.

When using the plants/leaves, do not pick them com-pletely, but leave a few leaves for the plant to use tosurvive. If you see your plants rebounding come latewinter/early spring, you have a chance to use this plantin your garden for next growing season. If they do notrebound, toss them come spring, and purchase new orplant seeds for the new seasons supply. Most of all en-joy your herbs this winter, and happy gardening!

BYCHRISMISCHLERIn the opening round of the Division V

state playoffs, Huron travelled an hourand a half away to take on the No. 2seeded, and previously unbeaten, teamfrom Liberty-Benton (Findlay, OH).

Fans thought back to the recent play-off routs by Genoa when Huron fumbledthe opening kick off back to the Eagles.A few plays later, Libertys RB Coombspowered his way into the end zone forthe opening score. But both, the Tigerdefense and offense buckled down. Hu-ron would score the next 21 points whileholding the opposition scoreless to takea 21-7 lead at the half.

Spencer Maddox tied up the gamewith a 48 yard scamper down the farsideline. Then, following a long 74 yardscramble by Cody Thompson, RB TommyBogden charged the ball in from 2 yardsout for a 14-7 lead. The third consecu-tive Tiger touchdown came on the soleTD pass of the game. It was an 11 yardacross the body toss to Zach Souter. Dur-

ing the second half, after the Eagles finalscore, the Tiger defense took control ofthe game and Liberty-Benton was un-able to maintain any sort of drive. QBCody Thompson capped off anotheroutstanding night (206 yards of total of-fense) with a 43 yard completion to WRNick Stauffer who was pulled down frombehind at the one. From there, Thomp-son called his own number and plowedthrough for the score.

Huron (8-3) will now play Loudenville,in the second round of the playoff, onSaturday night at a neutral site in Me-dina.
