Before using your phone

Battery

You need to charge the battery whenthe indicator light on the base of thephone flashes red or when the low

battery message appears on thescreen.

To insert the battery

1 Open the battery cover by pressingslightly on the upper part and sliding itdown the phone.

2 Insert the battery.

3 Slide the cover back onto the phone.

To charge the battery1 Make sure the battery is inserted.

2 Connect the charger to the phone.

3 Connect the charger to the mains.

SIM card

You receive a SIM (Subscriber IdentityModule) card when you register with anetwork operator. The SIM card keeps

track of your phone number, theservices included in your subscriptionand phonebook information. A PINcode is supplied with the SIM cardand must be entered, if requested,when you turn on your phone for thefirst time.

To insert the SIM card

1 Detach the charger (if connected).

2 Open the battery cover by pressingslightly on the upper part and sliding itdown the phone.

3 Remove the battery (if it is in place).

4 Insert the SIM card into the SIM cardholder.

5 Insert the battery.

6 Slide the cover back onto the phone.

IMEI number

IMEI (International Mobile EquipmentIdentifier) is a 15-digit number. Youroperator can use the IMEI number to

enable a complete barring of yourphone if it is stolen. The number isprinted at the bottom of the batterycompartment. You can also view thenumber on the phone display.

To view the IMEI number in yourphone

From Standby enter *#06#.

Care instructions

Use a moist cloth when you clean thescreen.

Only use the stylus provided, or your

fingertips, to tap the screen.For detailed care instructions, seeRecommendations for safe use ofproduct (mobile phone, battery,charger and other accessories) onpage 51.

First time start-upBefore you use your phone, seeGuidelines for Safe and Efficient Useon page 51.

Before you can use your phone you need

to insert the SIM card, and insert andcharge the battery.

To switch on your phone

1 Press and hold down the On/offbutton.

2 Select Phone on.

3 Select a language.4 Enter your PIN, if requested.

5 Select Done.

Keylock

Your phone has an automatic keylock

which is turned on as default. You canturn it off in Main menu>Controlpanel>Security>Locks.

To unlock the keyboard

1 From Standby press .

2 Select Unlock.

To manually lock the keyboard

1 From Standby press .

2 Select Lock keys.

Wizards

There are wizards available to helpyou set up your phone.

Setup wizard helps you to entersome basic settings for your phone.The wizard starts the first time youuse your phone or you can find it in

Main menu>Control panel>Other>Setup wizard.

Internet wizard automaticallydownloads settings for Internet andMMS. The wizard starts the firsttime you use your phone or you canfind it in Main menu>Control panel>Connections>Internet wizard.

Email wizard helps you to set upan email account in your phone.You can find it in Main menu>Control panel>Messaging>Emailwizard.

If you make a mistake when you enteryour PIN code, you can delete the number by pressing . If you enter the

wrong PIN code three times in a row, theSIM card is blocked. To unblock it, youneed to enter the PUK code suppliedwith your SIM card.

You can also press and hold tolock and unlock the keyboard.

If your phone is locked to an operator,Internet settings may be pre-set and theInternet wizard will not start when youuse your phone for the first time.

Turning the phone on and offYour phone has two modes ofoperation:

Phone on full functionality. Flight mode limited functionality

with network and radio functionsswitched off.

You can use flight mode where mobilephones are prohibited, such as inhospitals and aircrafts.

To turn on the phone in phone mode

1 Press and hold down the On/off

button.2 Select Phone on.

NavigationTo navigate menus and select items,you can use the Jog Dial, Back button,stylus, keyboard navigation keys,

touch options and your fingertips.

Jog Dial

You can rotate theJog Dial to scroll listsup and down, adjustsound volume. You

can press the JogDial to select ahighlighted item.

Back button

You can press to return to theprevious screen or menu. You can

press and hold down to returnto Standby or lock and unlock thekeyboard from Standby.

Stylus

You can tap the screen with the stylusto navigate and select items or to pan

multimedia pictures.

Finding the applications

Standby

Standby is the starting point for anumber of tasks and is displayed

whenever you turn on your phone. You

can change the view of Standby inMain menu>Control panel > Device> Standby application to:

Activity menu show the Today

view and shortcuts which you canset to reach the applications youuse most frequently.

None show an enlarged view ofthe clock.

Main menu

All the applications in your phone canbe found in Main menu . You canselect to view the applications in Mainmenu in a grid or a list.

To access applications in Main menu

To start an application

Select the application icon with thestylus or your fingertips, or rotate the

Jog Dial to highlight it and press theJog Dial.

To leave an application withoutclosing it

Switch to another application usingthe Task manager. See Task manager

To close an application

Press and hold . All data issaved.

Task managerTask manager helps you switchbetween applications. Leaving anapplication via Task manager ratherthan closing it, lets you return to thethe application in the state that you leftit. This is useful, for example, when

cutting and pasting text from oneapplication to another.

To switch to another application

1 Tap in the status bar or selectMore>Task manager.

2 Select the Recent tab.

3 Select the application and selectSwitch.

Memory Stick Micro (M2)Your phone comes with a MemoryStick which can be used as extrastorage space for pictures, music,

applications, and so forth. You canrename and format the Memory Stick.You can also transfer data to and fromthe Memory Stick.

To insert the Memory Stick

1 Open the cover.

2 Insert the MemoryStick in the slot.

To remove theMemory Stick

1 Open the cover.

2 Press the edge of the Memory Stick

inwards and then release it.

Connecting accessories

To connect an accessory

Connect the accessory to the base ofyour phone.

Sound

To set the ear speaker volume duringa phone call

Rotate the Jog Dial.To set the multimedia volume

1 Select >Volume>Multimedia.

2 Rotate the Jog Dial.

To set the volume for ringtone, alarmand message alerts

1 Select >Volume.

Do not remove the Memory Stickduringfile transfer. This may cause the phone tohang or it can corrupt the file system onthe Memory Stick.

Tilt the plug upwards when youdisconnect the accessory.

Transfer sound

Update softwareWhen an improved software versionfor your phone is introduced, you canupdate your phone using the

Sony Ericsson Update Service onwww.sonyericsson.com/support. TheWeb page has further instructions andwill guide you through the process.

Text entryText can be entered in several

different ways. The dual function

keyboard works as a standardkeyboard. The on-screen keyboardappears when selecting . You canalso use the stylus to write directly onthe screen.

Dual function keyboard

Each key has several characters andsymbols. In Standby the keyboard is innumber entry mode.

The characters are accessed bypressing the left or right side of thekey. By pressing you access the

characters or symbols on the top ofthe key.

Additional characters associated withthe pressed character will be shown inthe pre-edit box at top of the screen.

On-screen keyboard

The on-screen keyboard enables youto select the characters and symbolswith the stylus. The on-screenkeyboard can be set to differentlanguages.

From Standby you can press and holdto switch silent mode on or off.

Choosing a new language in the phonewill also automatically change thebehaviour of the keyboard to thatlanguage.

Handwriting recognition

Handwriting recognition translatesstylus gestures written directly on the

screen into letters, numbers or othercharacters, and displays thesecharacters as text. Handwritingrecognition is only active in placeswhere text can be entered.

To write letters

Write lower case letters below thearrow and upper case letters in linewith the arrow.

Start each stroke at the dotted end.

Write numbers above the arrow.

To write accented letters

1 Write the basic letter.

2 Write the accent above the arrow toform the accented letter.

Predictive text

You can use text prediction in all textentry methods. The primary word ornext word suggestion is presentedwhere you are writing, additionalsuggestions are presented in a pre-edit box at the top of the screen.

To turn predictive text on

1 Select More>Text options.

2 Mark the check box to enableenhanced text prediction in the status

bar.To change 1st and 2nd dictionarylanguages for text prediction

1 Select More>Text options and markthe Predictive text check box.

2 Select 1st language or 2nd language.

3 Select language in the list.4 Select Save.

Edit text

In the More menu you will find textediting functions like copying, cuttingand pasting.

To highlight the text with the stylus

Hold the stylus at the end of the textfor a short while then drag the stylus

across the text.Text options

You can build your own dictionaryusing My words, add symbols andchange text options in the More menu.

To switch auto capitalization on

1 Select More>Text options.

Networks

Network coverage

To make or receive a phone call yourphone must be within range of anetwork.

Home network

When you turn your phone on, itautomatically selects your homenetwork if it is within range.

Roaming

If your home network is not withinrange, you may use another networkthat is accepted by your operator. This

is calledroaming.Network settings

You can set how your phone shouldchoose an available network when youare outside your operators coveragearea. From Standby you find the

settings in Main menu > Control panel> Connections > Mobile networks.

Making a call

To make a call from Standby

Enter a phone number (including thearea number) from the keyboard and

select Call.

To make an international call

1 From Standby, press and hold toget the international call prefix.

2 Enter the country/region code, areacode (without the first zero) and phonenumber.

3 Select Call.

To delete characters when dialling

When entering a number you candelete characters by pressing .

Hide or show your phone numberWhen calling, you can choose in theMore menu whether to show or hideyour phone number to the calledparty.

Speed dial

You can save up to nine of yourcontacts as Speed contacts. Thismeans that you can call them usingabbreviated numbers (numbers 1 9).

To set a speed contact (number)

1 From Standby select Main menu>Phone>Speed contacts.

To reject a call with busy tone

Select No.

Rejecting a call with an SMSmessage

This feature means that you can rejecta call by sending a pre-defined SMStext message to the caller. Before youuse it, enter the settings from Standbyin Main menu>Control panel>Callsettings>Reject with SMS.

Rejecting a call and setting areminder

This feature means that you will be

asked to set a follow-up reminderevery time you reject a call. Before youuse it, enter the settings from Standbyin Main menu>Control panel>Callsettings>Flag call.

To enable the speakerphone

During a call, select More>Speakerphone on.

To mute the microphone (shortcut)

When you have answered a call, pressand hold .

To un-mute the microphone(shortcut)

When the microphone is muted, press.

Handling two or more callsYou can handle multiple calls at thesame time:

Usually no SIM card or PIN code isrequired for emergency calls, but thiscan be operator-dependant. Contactyour operator for more information.

Put an ongoing call on hold andstart a new one, or answer anincoming call.

Start a conference call during anongoing call (operator-dependent).

Extract one party in a conferencecall for a private talk and put theconference call on hold.

Retrieve a held call, or end it.

Conference call

You can start a conference call if youhave one active call and one on hold.The maximum number of conferenceparties is five.

To make a conference call

1 Make a call and select Hold.

2 Repeat the above step for the desirednumber of parties.

3 Select More>Start conference call.

Video callsWhen you make a video call you cansee the person you are talking to on

the screen.

To make a video call from the Videophone application

1 From Standby select Main menu>Phone>Video phone.

2 Enter the number using the keypad.

3 SelectVideo call.

To make a video call from Standby

1 Enter the number using the keypad.

2 SelectVideocall.

To accept an incoming call

When you receive a call, selectYes.

Video call demo mode

When you have selected the Videophone application you can try most ofthe functions without making a call.For example, you can prepare acamera view before calling.

Zoom

You can zoom the outgoing video feedcaptured with the rear camera. Thereare four zoom levels.

To zoom the video feed Use the button to zoom out and

the button to zoom in.

Pause picture

If the video feed is stopped, a pausepicture is sent to the other person. If

This feature is network- or operator-dependent. The service may not alwaysbe available in all countries or when youare roaming. Please contact youroperator for more information about your

subscription and video calls.

During an ongoing video call, selectCamera whenever you want to pauseor resume the outgoing video feed.

To switch between front and rearcamera

During an ongoing video call, select

either Use front camera or Use rearcamera in the More menu.

Options when making or receiving avideo call

Some options in the More menu are:

Hide small picture/Show smallpicture choose whether to removethe small picture from the display.

Turn on night mode set a brighterimage when the lighting is poor.

Share data send a Vcard, SMS orMMS message.

Advanced enter settingspreferably before you use theapplication.

Call logYou can find call information, such asthe type of call, time, date, phonenumber and call length, in Main menu>Phone>Call log. You can alsomake a call or a call note directly fromthis application.

HandsfreeIf you connect a handsfree or aBluetooth headset to your phone,you will need to set how to answer anincoming call. From Standby selectMain menu>Control panel>Call

settings>Handsfree.

Outbox contains messages readyto be sent.

Drafts contains messages that arenot ready to be sent. When you arecreating a message, and exit the

message before sending it, you willbe asked if you want to save it. Ifyou selectYes, the message willautomatically be stored in thisfolder.

Sent contains sent messages. SIM a folder located on your SIM

card.

SMSA message can contain up to 160characters. Longer messages will besent as two or more separate

messages (concatenated), but willusually be received as one message.You can add smileys, pictures andsounds to your messages.

To create and send an SMS

Before you use email

To use email you require an Internetaccount and will need to download the

Sending email messages

You can create email messages fromeach email account.

To create and send an email

Deleting email

You can delete a message both locallyand on your email server. When youdelete it locally, the message bodyand attachments are deleted but theheading remains. You can downloadthe message again later with the Get &send option. When you delete the

message on your server, it is deletedboth in your phone and on your server.

search through the subject lines,sender details and the text of themessage.

Large attachments increase the size ofan email and the connection timeneeded to send it. It is possible tochoose whether to forward theattachment.

Invitations

If you receive an invitation to anappointment via an email message,and you accept, your calendar will beupdated automatically. You can alsoreply to and forward an invitation.

With push email, email messagesreceived in your ordinary mailbox willautomatically be sent to your phone.You can send messages from your

phone, and also use Calendar andContacts as if you were using theordinary email application in yourcomputer.

Depending on your operator andmarket, you can have a different push

email client installed on your phone. Ifyour phone comes with ExchangeActiveSync, you can wirelesslysynchronize your phone with yourcorporate email, calendar items andcontacts on a Microsoft ExchangeServer. Exchange ActiveSync can befound ready for setup from Tools >Exchange ActiveSync or if not pre-installed ready for installation fromControl panel > Other > Install.

You can only have one corporate pushemail client installed on your phone.

IMAP Push email is available on yourphone besides your corporate pushemail client.

With your phone set into file transfermode you can drag and drop filesbetween the phone and the computerin Microsoft Windows Explorer.You can also use the SonyDisc2Phone and AdobePhotoshop Album SE computerapplications to transfer music andimage files. To use the file transfer mode

1 Connect the USB cable to the phoneand the computer.

4 Use Windows Explorer, SonyDisc2Phone or Adobe Photoshop

To scan a business card

2 Select Capture to activate the camera.

3 Take a picture of the business card bypressing the camera button.

You can add the details to yourcontacts now or you can choose to dothis later. You can find the scannedbusiness cards in Main menu>Office>Business card scanner>Browse.

Managing files andapplications

File manager

With File manager you can view,rename, copy, move and delete filesand folders on the phone memory andon Memory Sticks. The File managerview is displayed in two tabs. tabfor the phone memory and tab forthe Memory Stick.

Downloaded or received files may becopyright-protected. Copyright-

To install an application

To remove an application

1 From Standby select Main menu>Control panel>Other > Uninstall.
