MICHIGAN MODEL FOR HEALTH

Dear Beverly families,

The Michigan Model for Health is a progressive health curriculum that provides comprehensive health education for students in grades K-12. This year, a portion of our health curriculum in kindergarten through fifth grade includes a safety unit required by the Michigan Department of Education.

The primary goal of the program is to encourage students to maintain healthy behaviors and to partner with their home, school and community to reduce unhealthy behaviors. To do so, it is important that we collaborate with families to help children make positive choices. The Michigan Model for Health curriculum effectively provides children with the skills to make good choices.

Each concept includes developmentally appropriate lessons that teach the skills needed for self-protection. As a result of these lessons, students will:

Develop the ability to distinguish between safe and unsafe situations Learn assertive self-protection skills such as saying “no” and seeking help from a trusted adult Identify those trusted adults they can go to for help

Please review the safety units for each grade level below. These lessons will be taught in your child’s class throughout April and May. May has been identified as “Safety Month” at Beverly Elementary. If you have any questions or would like to review the health curriculum materials, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]

HUNTER’S HUT: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27

Hunter’s Hut will be open on the Tuesday we return from break, February 27. There are two locations: inside the back playground doors for grades 2 – 5 and in the hallway by the Preschool room for Kindergarten and 1st graders.

Page 4: Hunter’s Hut Open Before School “Co How it Works” GiGi’s ... · March 11 – GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit – Dance for Down Syndrome – 2:00 – 5:00 PM – Groves High School

All profits this year go towards our community service projects. Our current project is raising money for Heifer International, which provides livestock to families throughout the world. The animals provide both food (milk, eggs) and reliable income (honey, wool.) After break, the “winning” animal will be announced. The Bobcat Leadership team thanks you for your support!

CRAFTS FOR A CAUSE - BIG SUCCESS, THANKS TO MANY

Beverly’s annual Crafts for a Cause was a very successful event. Here’s what our students did, in less

than one hour: created placemats for Meals on Wheels recipients, designed greeting cards for nursing

home residents, made bookmarks to encourage reading, tied fleece blankets and packed bead activity

kits for Beaumont Children’s Hospital, decorated lunch bags for the homeless and filled animal

enrichment tubes for the zoo. Wow! What a great deal of Beverly caring! Special thanks to the parent

volunteers for their assistance with all of these projects!

READING BUDDY BREAKFAST

FRIDAY, MARCH 9

8:00 – 8:40 am

All Beverly students are invited to bring a “reading buddy” (parent, grandparent, neighbor) to school on the morning of Friday, March 9. Bagels, fruit and beverages (Starbucks coffee for the adults!) will be provided.

Students will have a chance to read with their reading buddy before school starts, either a book brought from home or borrowed from a selection at the breakfast. (Please note that students must be supervised by their reading buddy until 8:35 am.)

To help us plan for this event, please use the following Sign-up Genius to RSVP: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e044aa9ac2da7f49-2018

Page 6: Hunter’s Hut Open Before School “Co How it Works” GiGi’s ... · March 11 – GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit – Dance for Down Syndrome – 2:00 – 5:00 PM – Groves High School

4th grade parents - thank you to those who have already signed up to help with the 5th grade celebration. As we have said before this is a 'pay it forward' volunteer position. We are still in need of 2 Lead Chairs and a few other larger jobs to run this event. Job descriptions listed below. Please consider signing up to help for one of the open positions.

Lead Chair - NEED SOMEONE

Lead Chair - NEED SOMEONE

Creates Program - Zakiyah Brooks

Creates DVD - Jessica Lusk

Creates Memory Book - NEED SOMEONE

Photographer - NEED SOMEONE

Lead Chair for Food and Drink - Nena Sikorsky

Lead Chair for Decorations - Lisa Zubal Falinski

Lead Chair position/responsibilities:

These two individuals take the lead role in orchestrating the positions listed above. If no one volunteers for a specific job, the leads would need to take it over. They are also in charge of overseeing that each volunteer understands their job and is completing their job in a timely manner. Many tasks have deadlines. The chairs can decide to hold individual or group meetings. Lead volunteers are also in charge in overseeing the budget and gathering receipts to turn them into the PTA for reimbursement.

Memory Book volunteer:

The individual is in charge of gathering the Kindergarten and the Fifth grade school photo of each fifth grader, as well as their completed google doc survey. These items are merged into pages for the memory book. They are sent to the print shop to be bound and duplicated. This individual should be somewhat computer savvy with merging photos and docs. Thank you!

Photographer:

The photographer is in charge of taking individual pictures of each individual fifth grader in the spring. They will then edit/order the photo and frames. Have them ready for set up the day of the celebration.

Many others have signed up to help hang decorations, set up tables and chairs, clean-up crew, and donate food items. We appreciate you too!

Thank you for being patient with us as we added a number of honors sections back into our high school schedule. As you may be aware, Dr. Nerad made the decision to continue our honors courses in both high school math and science for the 2018-2019 school year. Specifically, this includes honors sections for Integrated Math 2, Integrated Math 3, Core Biology A&B, Chemistry A&B, Anatomy, and STEMx R&D.

Math Scheduling

For our middle school students:

Students in the Advanced 8th Grade Math cohort will be automatically scheduled for

Honors Integrated Math 2.

Teachers will contact parents of students that should not move into Honors Integrated

Math 2 after mid-winter break.

If you would not like your Advanced 8th Grade Math student scheduled for an honors

section, please talk with your middle school student’s counselor.

For our high school students:

Freshman students currently in Integrated Math 1 will be automatically scheduled for

Integrated Math 2.

If your student is interested in participating in Honors Integrated Math 2, please have

them consult their current math teacher for a recommendation.

Science Scheduling

For our middle school students:

The courses available for 9th grade students now include Honors Core Biology A/B, Core

Biology A/B, Core Chemistry/Core Physics, and Chemistry A/B.

The majority of our students have received recommendations for the previous

configuration that did not include Honors Biology. Please consult current science

teachers if you have a question regarding your student’s placement.

If your student previously selected Core Biology A/B or Chemistry A/B as their 9th grade

choice and would like to participate in Honors Core Biology A/B, or were scheduled for

Core Chemistry/Core Physics and would like to take Core Biology A/B, please talk with

your middle school student’s counselor. Please note that Honors Chemistry is not

available for 9th grade students.

You may wish to review all the 9th grade options now available to our students and make

a decision that best suits their academic interests. Please note that Honors Core Biology

A/B is an option for 9th grade students, but the course is not reflected in the scheduling

booklets at this time. For Groves: https://www.birmingham.k12.mi.us/domain/810 For

Seaholm: https://www.birmingham.k12.mi.us/Page/6708

For our high school students:

If your student registered for Chemistry A&B, or Anatomy & Physiology, and would like

to participate in Honors Chemistry A&B or Honors Anatomy & Physiology, please have

them consult their current science teacher for a recommendation.
